[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate is considered to be the main factor that determines forest species distribution. In Europe, climatic series show a global warming trend and an increase in frequency of summer droughts, which should affect growth and regeneration of tree populations. Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is particularly sensitive to drought and high temperatures. Then, this species reaches the rear edge of its lowland European distribution in the south-west of France. In this area, statistical modelling of future distributions based on climate scenarios show a significant potential reduction for F. sylvatica’s range. At the moment, failure of beech establishment is still unknown at the regional scale in the rear edge of its distribution range. The aim of this study was thus to determine if a reduction in natural regeneration of beechwoods could be related to the decrease in the species presence at its range margin. We identified ecological factors related to beech recruitment by estimating seedling density on the forest floor respectively in 71 and 85 beech plots in the south-west lowlands of France. We also determined if a relation between seedling amount and mast-seeding existed. We showed the importance of local factors in the natural regeneration stages by performing a multivariate reduction of the data and a multiple regression on densities. The inherent capacity of the stand to produce fruits explained a greater part of cupule density variance than did the climatic factor. However, we observed that meso-, micro- and pedo-climates were the main factors controlling seedling amount. Higher soil moisture, precipitation and temperature during the growing season increased seedling density, while late spring and early autumn frosts decreased it. Soil and stand conditions also played a significant role. Fruit production increased in stands that showed tree crown degradation, while seedling amount decreased in this case. The increase in allocation to reproduction could be a strategy of beech to cope with ecological constraints that tend to limit its establishment. Thus, seedling establishment is related to the factors controlling F. sylvatica presence at its southern distribution margins. This illustrates how natural regeneration is a key stage for beech success where the future of the species is jeopardized in the context of climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In order to estimate carbon stock in above ground biomass (CS-AGB) of M. Pizzalto forest in the Central-Apennines in Italy, the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index data (NDVI and EVI) were used in combination with field data. Biotic and abiotic parameters (slope angle, slope gradient, elevation, seasonal incoming solar radiation, length of growing season (LGS), soil type and forest management type) has been used in the modelling. NDVI and EVI values of field samples were extracted and used to estimate the LGS of beech forest for the six year period (2005-2010). Two management types, old-growth forest and young forest, showed average AGB and CS-AGB were 247 and 123 tons.ha-1 respectively in 2010 comparable to values for beech forests in the Apennines and Europe. LGS and management are the significant variables in a linear regression model for CS - AGB. Therefore, the forest authority can manage the young forest as sinks of carbon in agreement with the Kyoto protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Changes in forest growth have been found in European forests and worldwide. However most observations have been derived from samples of restricted size, whose representativeness at a regional forest scale is questionable. National forest inventories provide an interesting perspective for both regional scale assessment of these trends and the investigation of their variations over environmental gradients, but have been little used.
The aim of our work was to carry out an exploratory modelling analysis of productivity changes, based on the French national forest inventory data. The objectives were: (i) to assess recent trends in forest productivity and to investigate a possible recent decline as found in previous studies; and (ii) to investigate trend variations relative to site fertility factors. We focused on pure and even-aged stands of common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in north-eastern France, already documented from previous studies based on retrospective data.
The dataset consisted of 925 temporary plots inventoried between 1979 and 2007. We developed two regression models of stand basal area increment (BAI) against stand developmental stage (dominant height), site fertility (site index in the SI model, environmental indicators in the EI model) and stand density (relative density index). The effect of calendar date was tested in order to investigate possible historical trends. Site fertility–date interactions were also tested to investigate the site-dependence of trends.
The fitted models showed a high goodness of fit (adj. R2 over 0.69). We showed an increase in stand BAI of 27.8% between 1977 and 1987, (10.4% between 1979 and 1987). Stand BAI then decreased by approximately 5% between 1987 and 2004. We thus confirmed the hypothesis of a recent decline in common beech vitality in its temperate range. The chronologies clearly depicted the effect of severe drought events (1976 and 2003), pointing out the predominant role of water availability in the changes observed. No significant site-dependence of the trend was identified.Numéro de notice : A2010-648 Affiliation des auteurs : IFN+Ext (1958-2011) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.foreco.2010.06.005 Date de publication en ligne : 07/07/2010 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2010.06.005 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=90993
