[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Fires are among the most damaging disturbances to forests in the Mediterranean area. The study analyses the occurrence and characteristics of forest fires in Eastern Spain (1993–2015) to identify key variables related to burnt forest land, differentiating fires according to their burnt area. Data are retrieved from digital cartography, the Spanish Forest Map and data concerning fires. Based on previous research, the variables included are altitude, slope, aspect, fuel, species, population and road density. The fires are classified in small (5–50 ha), medium (50–500 ha) and large (> 500 ha). Four models are considered to explain the proportion of burnt area based on weighted generalized linear models: a general model and one per size class. The results highlight the different relations of similar variables with fires according to the size. When a single model is considered to explain all area burnt, the relationships are mainly driven by large fires. The larger area is burnt on forests with pine, bushes and small trees, whereas smaller fires tend to occur on lower altitude, low slope, high population and road densities. There are large differences in the variables according to the fire sizes, especially for the presence of pine (negative in the medium fires model but positive for the large fires model) and Pasture (which only explains the small fires). The models can be applied to analyse occurrence by fire size in Mediterranean areas, and the results can help elaborate fire prevention strategies and land-planning schemes. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In order to understand the impact of summer drought on dry deposition of tropospheric ozone (O3), we compared severe and mild drought periods of summer 2018 in a mountain Norway spruce forest at Bílý Kříž, Beskydy Mts. An eddy covariance technique was applied to measure diurnal courses of the ecosystem O3 and CO2 fluxes. Low O3 deposition was recorded in the morning and evening, while the highest CO2 and O3 fluxes were recorded during the central hours of the day. Total O3 deposition during severe drought (soil humidity 13%) was significantly higher than the deposition during the mild drought period (soil humidity 19%). Our data indicate that high vapour pressure deficit and low soil humidity during severe drought led to the stomatal closure, while non-stomatal O3 deposition, associated with chemical reactions of O3 with NO and volatile organic compounds, are responsible for higher total O3 deposition during the severe drought period. Therefore, we assume that under severe drought stomatal O3 uptake decreases but non-stomatal depositions to forest ecosystems substantially increase. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Decreasing stand density increases resistance, resilience, and recovery of Quercus petraea trees to severe drought (2003), particularly on dry sites, and the effect was independent of tree social status. Context: Controlling competition is an advocated strategy to modulate the response of trees to predicted changes in climate. Aims: We investigated the effects of stand density (low, medium, high; relative density index 0.20, 0.53, 1.04), social status (dominant, codominant, suppressed), and water balance (dry, mesic, wet; summer water balance − 182, − 126, − 96 mm) on the climate-growth relationships (1997–2012) and resistance (Rt), resilience (Rs), and recovery (Rc) following the 2003 drought. Methods: Basal area increments were collected by coring (269 trees) in young stands (28 ± 7.5 years in 2012) of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) in a French permanent network of silvicultural plots. Results: We showed that the climate-growth relationships depend on average site-level water balance with trees highly dependent on spring and summer droughts on dry and mesic sites and not at all on wet sites. Neither stand density nor social status modulated mean response to climate. Decreasing stand density increased Rt, Rs, and Rc particularly on dry sites. The effect was independent of tree social position within the stand. Conclusion: Reducing stand density mitigates more the effect of extreme drought events on drier sites than on wet sites. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In a mixed, Fagus sylvatica L.- Acer pseudoplatanus L., young plantation, trees of both species absorbed water from superficial soil layers despite the presence of roots and water in deeper layers. Admixture proportion and tree density were weak predictors of water acquisition depth, as well as fine root vertical distribution, although it might be due to distinct periods of root and isotope investigations.
Promoting mixed forests and reducing stand densities have been proposed as effective ways to maintain the productivity of temperate planted forest stands in a changing climate.
The objective of this study was to analyse how stand density and the degree of admixture of European beech and sycamore maple interactively influenced the water acquisition profile of individual trees. We used a stable isotope (deuterium) approach to determine the profiles of soil water acquisition of both species in a 16-year-old plantation where trees had been planted along crossed gradients of tree density and species proportion. The profiles were then compared with the vertical distribution of fine root of these species in the plantation. All the target trees mostly absorbed soil water from the first few centimetres of soil despite homogenous vertical water availability and the fact that a great part of the fine root biomass was located below 10 cm. Admixture proportion and tree density had negligible effects on soil water acquisition depth. No vertical differentiation of soil water acquisition between the two species was observed, suggesting that mixing these species does not promote reduction of belowground competition for resource acquisition. The vertical distribution of fine root may be a weak predictor of water acquisition depth.
