[Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (auteur) Wood microdensitometry is the analysis of radial variations of density at the annual or intra-annual growth ring level. Density is related to wood quality, biomass, carbon content, tree growth and climate. Wood microdensitometry is particularly used in dendrochronology and climatology studies. The present study focuses on X-ray based methods used in wood microdensitometry analyses and provides a review of the main available devices. An exhaustive review of 75 works published on this topic in 2014 and 2015 showed that film-based equipment is still commonly used. The three other most popular devices, SilviScan, Itrax and QTRS, are also based on X-ray radiography and deliver results with comparable accuracy, below 50 μm per pixel. X-ray tomography (CT) is still rarely used in wood densitometry. Medical CT scanners currently offer a lower accuracy (above 100 μm per pixel) that is insufficient in most cases for ring or intra-ring scales. Micro-CT scanners offer good performance at the cost of much longer acquisition and reconstruction times. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Most experimental evidence on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning comes from ecosystems with fast‐growing plants, such as grasslands. Although forests provide essential ecological services, they have been less well investigated. We used dendrochronology to compare the tree radial growth rates of four important timber species in replicated, spatially mapped stands that differed in tree composition and diversity within a central European managed forest. Growth rates differed among species but were largely unaffected by the density of neighbouring trees. Increasing stand diversity enhanced individual growth rates, after accounting for the effects of tree density and size. These increases were statistically indistinguishable among the four species. In contrast, the effects of stand and neighbourhood species composition on growth rates were non‐significant. Policy implications. Our study of long‐established central European forest stands revealed levels of tree diversity can be increased in managed forests, with the potential for modest increases in tree growth rates. These results suggest that in addition to the biodiversity and risk mitigation benefits associated with shifting practices away from monoculture management, increased carbon sequestration and yields in mature forests are likely to be realized. Our results suggest that it is possible to increase forest diversity with little or no costs to production and even with the potential for modest increases in tree growth rates. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Ash dieback induced by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus has emerged as one of the most serious health problem for European forests in the last ten years. However, precise estimation of the mortality induced by the pathogen is still scarce and this hampers management of affected stands. In this work, we used data of several surveys done since 2010 in France and Belgium to estimate the mortality rate associated with ash decline depending on the time of the pathogen presence in the area; for that a 2 steps procedure was used. First, we did an estimation of the frequency and severity of collar lesions associated with H. fraxineus depending on the length of the pathogen presence and for 2 trees size classes (lower or higher than 25 cm dbh). Then the annual mortality rate was estimated depending on collar lesion severity, dbh class (lower or higher than 25 cm) and time since pathogen presence. The global mortality induced by H. fraxineus was computed from those 2 types of data by a bootstrap approach. Additionally one survey observing young stands was used from which mortality was computed directly. We find that if mortality is drastic in very young ash stand affected by H. fraxineus (less than 5 cm dbh), with annual mortality reaching 35% 5-6 years after arrival of the pathogen in the stand, it is much more moderate for trees with dbh above 25 cm, with annual mortality reaching 3.2% after 8-9 years of pathogen presence. Annual mortality rates are intermediate for trees in the 5-25 cm dbh class and reached 10-11% after 8-9 years of pathogen presence.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy allows for the detection of local patterns of forest soil properties. In combination with dendrometric data, it may be used as a prospective tool for determining soil heterogeneity before setting up long-term forest monitoring experiments.
Context : Forest soils and stands generally exhibit higher spatial heterogeneity than other terrestrial ecosystems. This variability needs be taken into account before setting up long-term forest monitoring experiments to avoid multiple interactions between local heterogeneity and the factors tested in the experiment.
Aims : We hypothesized that raw near- and mid-infrared spectra can be used as an integrated proxy of a large set of soil properties. The use of this method, in combination with dendrometric data, should provide a quick and cost-effective tool for optimizing the design of experimental forest sites.
Methods : We assessed the local soil heterogeneity at 11 experimental sites in oak and beech stands, which belong to a new forest long-term ecological research (LTER) network. We used near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy in soil and litter samples. The spectra were subjected to principal components analyses (PCA) to determine the intra-site variability of the soil and litter layers.
Results : Based on mapped PCA coordinates and basic dendrometric data, it was possible to design the experiment and minimize the interactions between the treatment layout and the tested variables. The method was validated with chemical analyses of the soil. No interaction was detected at the set-up of the experiment between the treatment layout and chemical soil properties (C, N, C/N ratio, pH, CEC, Al, Mg, P2O5, Fe, Mn, Na, and K).
Conclusion : Near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy is a useful tool for characterizing the overall heterogeneity of soil chemical properties. It can be used without any preliminary calibration. In combination with dendrometric data, it provides a reliable method for optimizing LTER plots in different types of ecosystems.
