[Termes IGN] modèle de croissance végétaleRésumé : (auteur) Empirical observations suggest that in pure even-aged forests, the mean diameter of forest trees (D, diameter at breast height, 1.3 m above ground) tends to remain a constant proportion of stand height (H, average height of the largest trees in a stand) divided by the logarithm of stand density (N, number of trees per hectare): D = β( H−1.3) / ln ( N). Thinning causes a relatively small and temporary change in the slope β, the magnitude and duration of which depends on the nature of the thinning. This relationship may provide a robust predictor of growth in situations where scarce data and resources preclude more sophisticated modelling approaches. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Small footprint full-waveform airborne lidar systems offer large opportunities for improved forest characterization. To take advantage of full-waveform information, this paper presents a new processing method based on the decomposition of waveforms into a sum of parametric functions. The method consists of an enhanced peak detection algorithm combined with advanced echo modelling including Gaussian and generalized Gaussian models. The study focuses on the qualification of the extracted geometric information. Resulting 3D point clouds were compared to the point cloud provided by the operator. 40 to 60% additional points were detected mainly in the lower part of the canopy and in the low vegetation. Their contribution to Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and Canopy Height Models (CHMs) was then analysed. The quality of DTMs and CHM-based heights was assessed using field measurements on black pine plots under various topographic and stand characteristics. Results showed only slight improvements, up to 5 cm bias and standard deviation reduction. However both tree crowns and undergrowth were more densely sampled thanks to the detection of weak and overlapping echoes, opening up opportunities to study the detailed structure of forest stands. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne lidar systems have come to be extensively used in photogrammetry and mapping sciences. In this paper, a high-quality simulation approach and methods of smallfootprint lidar processing are presented and discussed, validated for tree height estimation, and demonstrated for scanning geometry effects analysis and mobile mapping. The simulation method implemented combines both spatial and radiometric components to produce realistic waveform and point cloud data for system performance analysis and for algorithm development for lidar data processing and mapping purposes. Waveform data generated by the simulator were shown to demonstrate the possibilities of such an approach in system and data verification. As the related empirical data are insufficient for effective research and exploitation in mapping purposes at the moment, the simulated waveform data are needed. A tree location accuracy of 15 cm and tree height underestimation of 0.33 m was found using the simulation model for the TopEye Mk II laser scanner, compared to the artificial forest model reference data. Modeling of light interaction on object surfaces and characteristics of scanning systems provide an opportunity to simulate laser data acquisition of well-defined objects under controlled conditions. By eliminating different sources of error case-by-case, we can improve the knowledge obtained merely from the experimental studies. Data validation in the scanning geometry simulations was carried out by comparing the simulated first echo data to the environment model and, separately, to the first echo data from an independent TopoSys II flight strip that was not used for the environment model computation. The mean differences reveal that the simulator slightly overestimates the object elevations. Deviation between the real TopoSys point cloud and the environmental model was 2 to 3 times larger than that obtained for the simulated Optech and TopoSys data sets.
We believe that the developed simulation and modeling is an efficient tool for determining the most reasonable set of flight parameters for any current mapping task, for analyzing change detection possibilities of repeated laser surveys, and for studying and verifying future lidar systems and concepts. However, this requires high-quality modeling of the system and extensive knowledge of the interaction between the laser beam and the object, which should be further developed in the coming years. Note de contenu : Bibliogr. [Termes IGN] MNS SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) Vegetation canopy heights derived from the SRTM 30 m grid DEM minus USGS National Elevation Data (NED) DTM were compared to three vegetation metrics derived from a medium footprint LIDAR data (LVIS) for the US Sierra Nevada forest in California. Generally the SRTM minus NED was found to underestimate the vegetation canopy height. Comparing the SRTM-NED-derived heights as a function of the canopy percentile height (shape/vertical structure) derived from LVIS, the SRTM SAR signal was found to penetrate, on average, into about 44% of the canopy and 85% after adjustment of the data. On the canopy type analysis, it was found that the SRTM phase scattering centres occurred at 60% for red fir, 53% for Sierra mixed conifer, 50% for ponderosa pine and 50% for montane hardwood-conifer. Whereas analysing the residual errors of the SRTM-NED minus the LVIS-derived canopy height as a function of LVIS canopy height and cover it was observed that the residuals generally increase with increasing canopy height and cover. Likewise, the behaviour of the RMSE as a function of canopy height and cover was observed to initially increase with canopy height and cover but saturates at 50 m canopy height and 60% canopy cover. On the other hand, the behaviour of the correlation coefficient as a function of canopy height and cover was found to be high at lower canopy height (15 m and 20% and Numéro de notice : A2009-257 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/01431160802555853 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160802555853 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=29887
