[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Errors in individual tree detection and delineation affect diameter distribution predictions based on crown attributes extracted from the detected trees. We develop a methodology for circumventing these problems. The method is based on matching cumulative distribution functions of field measured tree diameter distributions and crown radii distributions extracted from airborne laser scanning data through individual tree detection presented by Vauhkonen and Mehtätalo (2015). In this study, empirical distribution functions and a monotonic, nonlinear model curve are introduced. Tree crown radius distribution produced by individual tree detection is corrected by a method taking into account that all trees cannot be detected. The evaluation is based on the ability of the developed model sequence to predict quadratic mean diameter and total basal area. The studied data consists of 36 field plots in a typical boreal managed forest area in eastern Finland. The suggested enhancements to the model sequence produce improved results in most of the test cases. Most notably, in leave-one-out cross-validation experiments the modified models improve RMSE of basal area 13% in the full data and RMSE of quadratic mean diameter and basal area 69% and 11%, respectively, in pure pine plots. Better modeling of the crown radius distribution and improved matching between crown radii and stem diameters add the operational premises of the full distribution matching. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Size and spatial distribution of trees are important for forest stand growth, but the extent to which it matters in thinning operations, in terms of wood production and stand economy, has rarely been documented. Here we investigate how the choice of spatial evenness and tree-size distribution of residual trees impacts wood production and stand economy. A spatially explicit individual-based growth model was used, in conjunction with empirical cost functions for harvesting and forwarding, to calculate net production and net present value for different thinning operations in Norway spruce stands in Northern Sweden. The in silico thinning operations were defined by three variables: (1) spatial evenness after thinning, (2) tree size preference for harvesting, and (3) basal area reduction. We found that thinning that increases spatial evenness increases net production and net present value by around 2.0%, compared to the worst case. When changing the spatial evenness in conjunction with size preference we could observe an improvement of the net production and net present value up to 8.0%. The magnitude of impact differed greatly between the stands (from 1.7% to 8.0%) and was highest in the stand with the lowest stem density. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Introduction: National forest inventories are designed to produce statistics about forest attributes at a national to regional scales. Beyond these administrative units, the amount of points become limiting in terms of precision. In France, the establishment of regional programs for forest and wood (PRFB) require estimates at a smaller scale. The multisource inventory approaches allowed to bridge this gap (Tomppo et al. 2008). The methods rely on the combination of field plot information with auxiliary data (Kangas et al. 2018). The objective was to set up a multisource inventory workflow for the French Forest and to evaluate the gain in precision obtain at different administrative levels. Materials and methods: This research was conducted over a 7500 km2 area located in centre of France, of which 50 % is covered by forests dominated by broadleaved species. The forest area included 775 NFI plots collected during the 2009-2014 period. The auxiliary data were acquired in 2013-2014 and selected to fulfil the following criteria: Relevant, i.e. well correlated with the forest attributed under survey; Actualized Regularly for updating; Exhaustive over the whole territory; and Economical (RARE2). In this regard, we used the following data sources: Landsat images, 3D models derived from aerial photographs and a forest thematic map. We further evaluated the contribution of 3D models acquired 5 years apart in a subset area. The multisource approach relies on the non-parametric k-nearest neighbours (k-nn) approach owing to its multivariate capabilities. The k-nn was optimised for variable selection, number of neighbours (k) and distance metrics. Its performance was tested under a model-assisted framework using estimators from Mandallaz (2013) for various administrative levels. Results: Among the auxiliary variables tested, the 3D data source from aerial photographs performed best, as compared to Landsat, or forest thematic maps. The best combination of data included all sources and provide relative efficiencies (RE) varying from 2.05 for volume to 1.03 for stand density. Over the subset area, the diachronic data allow to improve the RE from 3-26 %. The diachronic data markedly improved the efficiency in estimations of forest type volumes, basal area and stand density. Similar RE were obtained for small area estimation at the scale of Canton and Municipalities. Conclusion: Our results confirmed the importance of 3D models of forest canopies and demonstrated the interest of canopy changes to improve precision of some forest attributes such as production volume and density, which are associated with fluxes. [Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Contexte.
Conclusion.

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Many monoculture forests have been converted to mixed-species forests in Europe over the last decades. The main reasons for this conversion were probably to increase productivity, including timber production, and enhance other ecosystem services, such as conservation of biodiversity and other nature values. This study was done by synthesizing results from studies carried out in Dutch mixed forests compared with monoculture stands and evaluating them in the perspective of the current theory. Then we explored possible mechanisms of higher productivity in mixed stands, in relation to the combination of species, stand age and soil fertility, and discussed possible consequences of forest management. The study covered five two-species mixtures and their corresponding monoculture stands from using long-term permanent forest plots over multiple decades as well as two inventories (around 2003 and 2013) across the entire Netherlands. These forest plot data were used together with empirical models at total stand level, species level and tree level. Overyielding in Douglas-fir–beech and pine–oak mixtures was maintained over time, probably owing to the intensive thinning and was achieved on the poorer soils. However, this overyielding was not always driven by fast-growing light-demanding species. On individual tree level, intra-specific competition was not necessarily stronger than inter-specific competition and this competitive reduction was less seen at lower soil fertility and dependent on species mixtures. Moreover, size-asymmetric competition for light was more associated with tree basal area growth than size-symmetric competition for soil resources. Overall, this study suggests a substantial potential of species mixing for increasing productivity and implies developing forest management strategies to convert monospecific forests to mixed-species forests that consider the complementarity in resource acquisition of tree species.
