[Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The successful launch and operation of the Sentinel satellite platform has provided access to freely available remotely sensed data useful for commercial forest species discrimination. Sentinel – 1 (S1) with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor and Sentinel – 2 (S2) multi-spectral sensor with additional and strategically positioned bands offer great potential for providing reliable information for discriminating and mapping commercial forest species. In this study, we sought to determine the value of S1 and S2 data characteristics in discriminating and mapping commercial forest species. Using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) algorithm, S2 multi-spectral imagery showed an overall classification accuracy of 84% (kappa = 0.81), with bands such as the red-edge (703.9–740.2 nm), narrow near infrared (835.1–864.8 nm), and short wave infrared (1613.7–2202.4 nm) particularly influential in discriminating individual forest species stands. When Sentinel 2’s spectral wavebands were fused with Sentinel 1’s (SAR) VV and VH polarimetric modes, overall classification accuracies improved to 87% (kappa = 0.83) and 88% (kappa = 0.85), respectively. These findings demonstrate the value of combining Sentinel’s multispectral and SAR structural information characteristics in improving commercial forest species discrimination. These, in addition to the sensors free availability, higher spatial resolution and larger swath width, offer unprecedented opportunities for improved local and large scale commercial forest species discrimination and mapping. [Termes IGN] image RVBRésumé : (auteur) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) greatly extended our possibilities to acquire high resolution remote sensing data for assessing the spatial distribution of species composition and vegetation characteristics. Yet, current pixel- or texture-based mapping approaches do not fully exploit the information content provided by the high spatial resolution. Here, to fully harness this spatial detail, we apply deep learning techniques, that is, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), on regular tiles of UAV-orthoimagery (here 2–5 m) to identify the cover of target plant species and plant communities. The approach was tested with UAV-based orthomosaics and photogrammetric 3D information in three case studies, that is, (1) mapping tree species cover in primary forests, (2) mapping plant invasions by woody species into forests and open land and (3) mapping vegetation succession in a glacier foreland. All three case studies resulted in high predictive accuracies. The accuracy increased with increasing tile size (2–5 m) reflecting the increased spatial context captured by a tile. The inclusion of 3D information derived from the photogrammetric workflow did not significantly improve the models. We conclude that CNN are powerful in harnessing high resolution data acquired from UAV to map vegetation patterns. The study was based on low cost red, green, blue (RGB) sensors making the method accessible to a wide range of users. Combining UAV and CNN will provide tremendous opportunities for ecological applications. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Research Highlights: This study developed the first remote sensing-based forest cover map of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in a very high level of detail.
Background and Objectives: As available global or pan-European forest maps have a low level of detail and the forest definition is not considered, administrative data are often oversimplified or out of date. Consequently, there is an important need for spatio-temporally explicit forest maps. The main objective of the present study was to generate a forest cover map of Baden-Württemberg, taking the German forest definition into account. Furthermore, we compared the results to NFI data; incongruences were categorized and quantified. Materials and
Methods: We used a multisensory approach involving both aerial images and Sentinel-2 data. The applied methods are almost completely automated and therefore suitable for area-wide forest mapping.
Results: According to our results, approximately 37.12% of the state is covered by forest, which agrees very well with the results of the NFI report (37.26% ± 0.44%). We showed that the forest cover map could be derived by aerial images and Sentinel-2 data including various data acquisition conditions and settings. Comparisons between the forest cover map and 34,429 NFI plots resulted in a spatial agreement of 95.21% overall. We identified four reasons for incongruences: (a) edge effects at forest borders (2.08%), (b) different forest definitions since NFI does not specify minimum tree height (2.04%), (c) land cover does not match land use (0.66%) and (d) errors in the forest cover layer (0.01%).
Conclusions: The introduced approach is a valuable technique for mapping forest cover in a high level of detail. The developed forest cover map is frequently updated and thus can be used for monitoring purposes and for assisting a wide range of forest science, biodiversity or climate change-related studies.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in vegetation remote sensing allows a time-flexible and cost-effective acquisition of very high-resolution imagery. Still, current methods for the mapping of forest tree species do not exploit the respective, rich spatial information. Here, we assessed the potential of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and very high-resolution RGB imagery from UAVs for the mapping of tree species in temperate forests.
