[Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (auteur) Exploring the possibility to produce nation-wide forest attribute maps using stereophotogrammetry of aerial images, the national terrain model and data from the National Forest Inventory (NFI). The study areas are four image acquisition blocks in mid- and south Sweden. Regression models were developed and applied to 12.5 m × 12.5 m raster cells for each block and validation was done with an independent dataset of forest stands. Model performance was compared for eight different forest types separately and the accuracies between forest types clearly differs for both image- and LiDAR methods, but between methods the difference in accuracy is small at plot level. At stand level, the root mean square error in percent of the mean (RMSE%) were ranging: from 7.7% to 10.5% for mean height; from 12.0% to 17.8% for mean diameter; from 21.8% to 22.8% for stem volume; and from 17.7% to 21.1% for basal area. This study clearly shows that aerial images from the national image program together with field sample plots from the NFI can be used for large area forest attribute mapping. [Termes IGN] puits de carboneRésumé : (auteur) Forest stand age is a meaningful metric, which reflects the past disturbance legacy, provides guidelines for forest management practices, and is an important factor in qualifying forest carbon cycles and carbon sequestration potential. Reliable large-scale forest stand age information with high spatial resolutions, however, is difficult to obtain. In this study, we developed a top-down method to downscale the provincial statistics of national forest inventory data into 1 km stand age map using climate data and light detection and ranging-derived forest height. We find that the distribution of forest stand age in China is highly heterogeneous across the country, with a mean value of ~42.6 years old. The relatively young stand age for Chinese forests is mostly due to the large proportion of newly planted forests (0–40 years old), which are more prevailing in south China. Older forests (stand age > 60 years old) are more frequently found in east Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and the central mountain areas of west and northeast China, where human activities are less intensive. Among the 15 forest types, forests dominated by species of , with the exception of Cunninghamia lanceolata stands, have the oldest mean stand age (136 years), whereas Pinus massoniana forests are the youngest (18 years). We further identified uncertainties associated with our forest age map, which are high in west and northeast China. Our work documents the distribution of forest stand age in China at a high resolution which is useful for carbon cycle modeling and the sustainable use of China's forest resources. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Forest mapping from satellite sensor imagery provides important information for the timely monitoring of forest growth and deforestation, bioenergy potential assessment, and modeling of carbon flux, among others. Due to the daily global revisit rate and wide swath width, MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images are used commonly for satellite-derived forest mapping at both regional and global scales. However, the spatial resolution of MODIS images is too coarse to observe fine spatial variation in forest cover. The last few decades have seen the production of several fine-spatial-resolution satellite-derived global forest cover maps, such as Hansen's global tree canopy cover map of 2000, which includes abundant spectral, temporal, and spatial prior information about forest cover at a fine spatial resolution. In this paper, a novel learning-based spatial-temporal superresolution mapping approach is proposed to integrate both current MODIS images and prior maps of Hansen's tree canopy cover, to map present forest cover with a fine spatial resolution. The novel approach is composed of three main stages: 1) automatic generation of 240-m forest proportion images from both 240- and 480-m MODIS images using a nonlinear learning-based spectral unmixing method; 2) downscaling the 240-m forest proportion images to 30 m to predict the class possibilities at the subpixel scale using a temporal-example learning-based downscaling method; and 3) final production of the fine-spatial-resolution forest map by solving a regularization-based optimization problem. The novel approach produced more accurate fine-spatial-resolution forest cover maps in terms of both visual and quantitative evaluation than traditional pixel-based classification and the latest subpixel based superresolution mapping methods. The results show the great efficiency and potential of the novel approach for producing fine-spatial-resolution forest maps from MODIS images. [Termes IGN] image LandsatRésumé : (auteur) Aim : Tropical forest degradation is a significant source of carbon emissions due to selective logging, fragmentation and other disturbance factors. However, methods for mapping and monitoring pan-tropical forest degradation are still in their infancy. Here we present a new and automated approach to differentiate forests likely to be affected by degradation dynamics from more structurally intact forests, referred to as hinterland forests.
Location : Pan-tropical.
Methods : Inputs required for hinterland forest mapping include the extent of the initial forest cover and subsequent forest cover loss data, in this case global-scale Landsat-derived tree cover and stand-replacement disturbance maps. User-defined parameters employed to generate the extent and change of hinterland forest include: (1) minimum size of hinterland forest patch, (2) minimum corridor width, (3) distance from disturbance, and (4) extant history.
Results : Hinterland forest extent was mapped using forest cover loss data from 2000 to 2012 and hinterland forest loss was quantified from 2007 to 2013. Lidar-modelled forest height data were shown to be different within and outside hinterland forests, demonstrating the biophysical basis of the hinterland concept in discriminating likely degradation. Overall, hinterland forests experienced an 18% decline from 2007 to 2013. Regional variation in hinterland forest extent and loss was high. Data on 2013 pan-tropical hinterland forest extent can be downloaded from http://glad.geog.umd.edu/hinterland/index.html and viewed online at http://earthenginepartners.appspot.com/science-2013-global-forest.
Main conclusions : The largest extent of hinterland forests and of hinterland forest loss was found in Latin America, followed by Africa and Southeast Asia, respectively. The highest proportional loss of hinterland forest occurred in Southeast Asia, followed by Africa and Latin America, respectively. Nearly 95% of all 2013 hinterland forests were found in 17 of the 69 tropical forest countries studied. The extent and loss of hinterland forest can be an input to national monitoring and management programmes focused on forest carbon stocks, biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services.
