[Termes IGN] trajet (mobilité)Résumé : (auteur) Mobile phone operators produce enormous amounts of data. In this paper, we present applications performed with a dataset (communication events + handover and Location Area Up-date) collected by the operator Orange from 31 March to 11 April 2009 for the whole Paris Region. Trips are deduced from the spatio-temporal trajectory of devices through a hypothesis of stationarity within a Location Area in order to define activities. Trips are then aggregated in an origin-destination matrix which is compared with traditional data (census data and household travel survey). [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Mining a large origin–destination dataset of journeys made through London’s Cycle Hire Scheme (LCHS), we develop a technique for automatically classifying commuting behaviour that involves a spatial analysis of cyclists’ journeys. We identify a subset of potential commuting cyclists, and for each individual define a plausible geographic area representing their workplace. All peak-time journeys terminating within the vicinity of this derived workplace in the morning, and originating from this derived workplace in the evening, we label commutes. Three techniques for creating these workplace areas are compared using visual analytics: a weighted mean-centres calculation, spatial k-means clustering and a kernel density-estimation method. Evaluating these techniques at the individual cyclist level, we find that commuters’ peak-time journeys are more spatially diverse than might be expected, and that for a significant portion of commuters there appears to be more than one plausible spatial workplace area. Evaluating the three techniques visually, we select the density-estimation as our preferred method. Two distinct types of commuting activity are identified: those taken by LCHS customers living outside of London, who make highly regular commuting journeys at London’s major rail hubs; and more varied commuting behaviours by those living very close to a bike-share docking station. We find evidence of many interpeak journeys around London’s universities apparently being taken as part of cyclists’ working day. Imbalances in the number of morning commutes to, and evening commutes from, derived workplaces are also found, which might relate to local availability of bikes. Significant decisions around our workplace analysis, and particularly these broader insights into commuting behaviours, are discovered through exploring this analysis visually. The visual analysis approach described in the paper is effective in enabling a research team with varying levels of analysis experience to participate in this research. We suggest that such an approach is of relevance to many applied research contexts. [Termes IGN] trace numériqueRésumé : (auteur) In the past few years the mobile phone data are considered as a useful complementary source of information for human mobility research. In this paper, we focus on the computation of the Origin Destination matrix using mobile phone data. First, a new approach of OD matrix design which takes into account the spatiotemporal heterogeneities of mobile phone data is proposed. Second, some analysis allowing measuring the effect of spatio-temporal filtering on the OD matrix results are carried out. [Termes IGN] véhicule automobileRésumé : (Auteur) Mobility and spatial interaction data have become increasingly available due to the wide adoption of location-aware technologies. Examples of mobility data include human daily activities, vehicle trajectories, and animal movements, among others. In this article, we focus on a special type of mobility data, i.e. origin-destination pairs, and present a new approach to the discovery and understanding of spatio-temporal patterns in the movements. Specifically, to extract information from complex connections among a large number of point locations, the approach involves two steps: (1) spatial clustering of massive GPS points to recognize potentially meaningful places; and (2) extraction and mapping of the flow measures of clusters to understand the spatial distribution and temporal trends of movements. We present a case study with a large dataset of taxi trajectories in Shenzhen, China to demonstrate and evaluate the methodology. The contribution of the research is two-fold. First, it presents a new methodology for detecting location patterns and spatial structures embedded in origin-destination movements. Second, the approach is scalable to large data sets and can summarize massive data to facilitate pattern extraction and understanding.
