The emerging science and technology of learning analytics seeks to use this information to improve learning outcomes and support institutional assessment. In this work we explore the potential for the spatial dimension in learning analytics, and we evaluate a prototype geovisualization system designed to support what we call spatial learning analytics. A user evaluation with geographers and educators was conducted to characterize the usability and utility of our prototype spatial learning analytics system. By helping us understand what our prototype system does and does not do well, we are able to suggest a variety of new ways in which future spatial learning analytics systems can be developed. Some of them include representation of both linear and cyclic aspects of time, providing an exploratory analysis of spatio-temporal data through several temporal cyclic scales. However, few of them provide an exploratory analysis of localized cyclic recurrences in spatio-temporal data. Ad hoc temporal diagrams, representing both linear and cyclic aspects of time, provide a visual search for cyclic recurrences in temporal data when the possibility is left to the user to perform a gradual modification of the represented cyclic scale’s duration. The combination of these graphic representations of time, with cartographic representations, displaying the spatial distribution of such cyclic recurrences, could provide an exploratory analysis of localized cyclic recurrences in spatio-temporal data. Mathematical tools coming from other scientific fields, such as the harmonic analysis, offer another way to identify cyclic behaviors in temporal data. Combining the visual approach offered by specifically designed geovisualization environments, with a harmonic analysis that suggests searching paths to the user during its exploratory analysis, can then improve the visual search for localized cyclic recurrences. We propose a geovisualization environment, which combines, on one hand, a visual analysis of localized cyclic recurrences in spatio-temporal data, using ad hoc temporal diagrams, cartographic representations, and specific semiologic rules, and on the other hand, mathematical tools, such as harmonic analysis and spatial clustering, that provide searching paths to the user for its visual analysis. This approach is supported by a geovisualization environment, GrAPHiST, which provides an exploratory analysis of spatio-temporal event data. Although CMV are valuable geovisualization tools, novice users may find them complex and thus require explanation. However, no tutorial guidelines have been developed that indicate what is helpful in understanding CMV geovisualization tools. We therefore conducted a study on the learnability of a CMV tool, informed with eye-tracking data, talk-aloud and interaction logs. We have investigated how untrained users work with a CMV geovisualization tool. The study revealed that: (1) despite their initial confusion, users found the tested tool pleasant to play with while getting to grips with how dynamic brushing works, (2) when examining the tool’s interface, participants mainly looked freely at explanatory elements, such as labels and the legend, but they explored interactive techniques only to a limited degree. We conclude with tips about tutorial design and layout design for CMV tools. While trajectory data reflect the instantaneous animal position in space and time, other factors influence movement decisions between these observed positions. While some methods incorporate environmental (habitat) context into their understanding of the animal movement process, it is often captured in terms of simple parameters or weights influencing model results; primary behavioral data are not used directly to inform these models. Here, a new space-time constrained agent-based model is introduced, capable of producing ordered, behaviorally informed animal potential paths between observed space-time anchors. Potential paths generated by this approach incorporate both observed animal behavior and classical space-time constraints, and are used to construct associated visit probability distributions. Additionally, the notion of a behavioral space-time path is introduced, a variant of the space-time path based on the results of behaviorally aware animal movement simulation. The results of this approach demonstrate a means to better understand the varied movement opportunities within space-time prisms from an animal behavior perspective. From a spatial ecology perspective, not only is the environmental context considered, but the animal’s choice of transition and movement magnitude between contexts is modeled. This approach provides insight into the complex sequence of behaviorally informed actions driving animal movement decision-making. Specifically, we describe the process of design, development and application of a prototypical user study tailored to the evaluation of complex geovisual analytics tools that focus on social media analysis. We fist perform a synthesis of existing theory and best practices for software evaluation of comparable systems. We then demonstrate how the product of said synthesis – a methodological ‘check list’ – can be used to inform a proof-of-concept user study of an actual geovisual analytics software system. The resulting user study design accommodates for the use of real geographic social media datasets, the complexity of the intended analytical process, and for the learning challenges faced by the participants working with a fully-functional and mature geovisual analytics application, and is likely representative of a wide range of evaluation scenarios in (geo)visual analytics. A complete summary of all the study instruments is included to encourage their scrutiny, reuse and modification by others. Finally, we have discovered that participants’ curiosity and desire for autonomy played a noticeable role in the evaluation process – something not previously reported.
