[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationMots-clés libres : algorithms map labeling computational geometry geovisualization Résumé : (auteur) Point feature map labeling is a geometric visualization problem, in which a set of input points must be labeled with a set of disjoint rectangles (the bounding boxes of the label texts). It is predominantly motivated by label placement in maps but it also has other visualization applications. Typically, labeling models either use internal labels, which must touch their feature point, or external (boundary) labels, which are placed outside the input image and which are connected to their feature points by crossing-free leader lines. In this paper we study polynomial-time algorithms for maximizing the number of internal labels in a mixed labeling model that combines internal and external labels. The model requires that all leaders are parallel to a given orientation θ ∈ [0, 2π), the value of which influences the geometric properties and hence the running times of our algorithms. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The paper investigates whether the methods chosen for representing uncertain geographic information aid or impair decision-making in the context of wildfire hazard. Through a series of three human subject experiments, utilizing 180 subjects and employing increasingly difficult tasks, this research evaluates the effect of five different visualizations and a text-based representation on decision-making under uncertainty. Our quantitative experiments focus specifically on the task of decision-making under uncertainty, rather than the task of reading levels of uncertainty from the map. To guard against the potential for generosity and risk seeking in decision-making under uncertainty, the experimental design uses performance-based incentives. The experiments showed that the choice of representation makes little difference to performance in cases where subjects are allowed the time and focus to consider their decisions. However, with the increasing difficulty of time pressure, subjects performed best using a spectral color hue-based representation, rather than more carefully designed cartographic representations. Text-based and simplified boundary encodings were among the worst performers. The results have implications for the performance of decision-making under uncertainty using static maps, especially in the stressful environments surrounding an emergency. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Maps are widely used to provide urban managers with information on critical urban issues such as deprivation, unemployment, and segregation. Although administrative boundaries have always played an important role in map making, they are not meaningful for revealing the spatial dynamics of urban phenomena that vary within wards, cross ward boundaries and do not necessarily stop at the city boundary.
Recently, very detailed (spatial) data have become available providing opportunities for new types of urban mapping. To process these data into meaningful maps, three aspects are important. First, information on maps should be produced at a spatial scale that is relevant for a particular urban phenomenon. Second, to reveal and monitor urban dynamics, maps of a phenomenon at different moments in time are needed. Finally, to accommodate access to these maps for potential users without (much) expertise in mapping, they should be provided through an easy to use tool.
The Regional Monitor Amsterdam (RMA), an online GIS application, deals with these aspects. The purposes of this paper are to explain the mapping methodology adopted in the RMA and to illustrate the usefulness of the tool in urban management. This methodology goes beyond administrative mapping areas with fixed boundaries by introducing ‘data-driven dynamic geographies’. We argue that this methodology produces relevant information by recognizing the scale at which urban phenomena occur. The monitoring tool assists in answering policy questions by easy access to relevant maps for different moments in time.
