[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Typographic variables were only briefly discussed by Bertin with no example applications. We review historic examples to extend Bertin’s framework with literal encoding, 10 typographic attributes, variations on scope including characters, words, phrases and paragraphs, and more layout types. We then apply the framework to Bertin’s population dataset to create 11 new typographic visualizations. The approach raises questions for new research such as readability, semantic association, interaction, and comprehension. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Transformations, for many the core of analytical cartography, involve manipulations of semiotics and semantics. To develop a framework for contemporary geovisualization, we draw on concepts behind Jacques Bertin’s lesser known work among Anglo-American cartographers, La graphique et le traitement graphique de l’information (1977 Bertin, J. (1977). Paris: Flammarion. [Google Scholar]), translated 1981 as Graphics and graphic information-processing. This book describes the transformations of semiotics and semantics in a matrix-based process to create graphics, especially geovisualizations. It offers a logical development from concepts presented in the semiology of graphics and took up semantics and communication aspects. The framework we develop starts with the insights from this book but moves beyond Bertin’s questionable assumption about the necessity of a prior accord between map producer and map reader regarding semiotics and semantics for successful communication. We reconsider the involved semiotic and semantic manipulations for the discursive analysis of geovisualizations beginning with Barbara Petchenik’s insight that cartographic communication accounts for biases and physiological limits. We broaden these considerations to include distributed cognition concepts from Edward Hutchins, which account for preferences and physiological limitations regarding their broader institutional and cultural settings. The revised linkage of semantics and semiotics, which understands map design as a process of developing boundary objects, focuses on the transformations for making geovisualizations. This analysis holds relevance for improvements to geovisualization and the development of enhancements for cartographic design. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur)In this article, we describe some ideas based on Bertin’s Sémiologie Graphique with a focus on extending it for aesthetic quality issues in cartography. We consider research in semiotics, aesthetics, and graphic design, with some fruitful results about the use of color or composition. We present several tools, oriented toward a pedagogical use and accessibility, helping to examine the color composition of an expressing image or to create meaningful gradients. While Bertin’s concepts still remain relevant and efficient, specific ideas can be developed further, to adapt to current media and gain from scientific advances from related disciplines. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Eye movement data convey a wealth of information that can be used to probe human behaviour and cognitive processes. To date, eye tracking studies have mainly focused on laboratory-based evaluations of cartographic interfaces; in contrast, little attention has been paid to eye movement data mining for real-world applications. In this study, we propose using machine-learning methods to infer user tasks from eye movement data in real-world pedestrian navigation scenarios. We conducted a real-world pedestrian navigation experiment in which we recorded eye movement data from 38 participants. We trained and cross-validated a random forest classifier for classifying five common navigation tasks using five types of eye movement features. The results show that the classifier can achieve an overall accuracy of 67%. We found that statistical eye movement features and saccade encoding features are more useful than the other investigated types of features for distinguishing user tasks. We also identified that the choice of classifier, the time window size and the eye movement features considered are all important factors that influence task inference performance. Results of the research open doors to some potential real-world innovative applications, such as navigation systems that can provide task-related information depending on the task a user is performing.
