[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Questions : Has the observed decline in the willow Salix caprea L., one of the most common colonizers of post-mining sites in Central Europe, contributed to changes in the rest of the plant community on post-mining sites? How does S. caprea modify its understorey? How is the understorey vegetation affected by above-ground and below-ground competition with S. caprea?
Location : Heaps after coal mining near Sokolov, Czech Republic (50°14′21″ N, 12°40′45″ E).
Methods : The effects of above-ground and below-ground competition with the willow S. caprea on its understorey plant community were studied in un-reclaimed post-mining sites. Below-ground competition was evaluated by comparing (1) frames inserted into the soil that excluded woody roots (frame treatment), (2) frames that initially excluded woody root growth but then allowed regrowth of the roots (open-frame treatment), and (3) undisturbed soil (no-frame treatment). These treatments were combined with S. caprea thinning to assess the effect of above-ground competition.
Results : Three years after the start of the experiment, above-ground competition from S. caprea (as modified by thinning of the S. caprea canopy) had not affected understorey biomass or species number, but had affected species composition. In contrast, below-ground competition significantly affected both the above-ground and below-ground biomass of the understorey. The above-ground biomass of the understorey was larger in the frame treatment (which excluded woody roots) than in the other two treatments. The below-ground biomass of the understorey was larger in the frame than in the open-frame treatment. Unlike above-ground competition (light availability), below-ground competition did not affect understorey species composition.
Conclusions : Our results suggest that S. caprea is an important component during plant succession on post-mining sites because it considerably modifies its understorey plant community. Below-ground competition is a major reason for the low cover and biomass of the herbaceous understorey in S. caprea stands on post-mining sites.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The aims of the study are the description of the distribution patterns of main forest tree species along complex environmental gradients and niche characterization, using the data from 772 plots from the third Spanish National Forest Inventory. Simultaneously, we would like to identify the relative contribution of spatial and environmental variation to the species compositional patterns. Spatially structured environmental and fine-scale spatial variables explained more tree compositional distribution than broad-scale spatial variables, suggesting that niche partitioning is the main process influencing forest species abundances along this gradient. However, vegetation compositional changes were mainly determined by the north–south topographic-climatic differences (primary coenocline), although steepness was also related to the particular location of some plant communities. Unimodal response curves dominate along the gradients, with tree species optima at different points, providing evidence of a sufficient amount of compositional turnover. Niche location of trait-related tree species is closely located. Tree species occupying environments with sharp contrast or transitional environments have broadest niches, whereas those species occupying localized habitats showed the narrowest niches. The methodology used provides an objective assessment of the shape of species' responses along complex ecological gradients, as well as of the spatial and environmental factors implicated in their distribution patterns using datasets from national forest inventories. The description of the main factors determining the gradients and the species distributions and niche characteristics will improve our ability to discuss potential conservation management goals or threats due to land uses changes and future climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Forest edges are important features of wooded farmland. Their role for biodiversity was investigated using tree microhabitats (TMH) as an indirect indicator of forest biodiversity. Because they are managed more intensively, trees in the edges of fragmented temperate woodlands are likely to host more TMH than trees in their interior. In this study, we tested this hypothesis in relation to tree density, diameter, species composition and the structure and management of woodland edges. We selected 28 woodlands with edges differing by their structure and the adjacent fields. Eleven types of TMH were recorded in two transects set up in the edges and interior of the woodlands. TMH density was significantly higher in the woodland edges (4.67 ± 0.78 per 100 m2 area) than in the interior (1.86 ± 0.23 per 100 m2 area). Some TMH - patches of bark loss, cracks, sap runs and epiphytes – were significantly more abundant in the edges than in the interior. These results were accounted for by the convergence of several factors: (i) significantly higher tree density in woodland edges, (ii) a significantly higher proportion of TMH host trees in woodland edges, (iii) a larger tree diameter on average in woodland edges and, even in the same given size class, a higher frequency of TMH host trees, and (iv) greater abundance in woodland edges of tree species more likely to host TMH, even with small diameters. The positive relationship found between the height of the bottom of the crown and TMH abundance may have resulted from abiotic factors (micro-climatic conditions) related to long management rotations, but we did not demonstrate any direct effect of management practices. Given the large number of forest taxa, but also farmland taxa, that depend on TMH, woodland edges should be reconsidered as zones of high potential interest for forest biodiversity conservation.
