[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping of exact tree positions can be regarded as a crucial task of field work associated with forest monitoring, especially on intensive research plots. We propose a two-stage density clustering approach for the automatic mapping of tree positions, and an algorithm for automatic tree diameter estimates based on terrestrial laser-scanning (TLS) point cloud data sampled under limited sighting conditions. We show that our novel approach is able to detect tree positions in a mixed and vertically structured stand with an overall accuracy of 91.6%, and with omission- and commission error of only 5.7% and 2.7% respectively. Moreover, we were able to reproduce the stand’s diameter in breast height (DBH) distribution, and to estimate single trees DBH with a mean average deviation of ±2.90 cm compared with tape measurements as reference. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Advances in computer vision and the parallel development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) allow for the extensive use of UAV in forest inventory and in indirect measurements of tree features. We used UAV-sensed high-resolution imagery through photogrammetry and Structure from Motion (SfM) to estimate tree heights and crown diameters. We reconstructed 3D structures from 2D image sequences for two study areas (25 × 25 m). Species composition for Plot 1 included Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) together with European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), whereas Plot 2 was mainly Norway spruce and Scots pine together with scattered individuals of European larch and Silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.). The involved workflow used canopy height models (CHMs) for the extraction of height, the smoothing of raster images for the determination of the local maxima, and Inverse Watershed Segmentation (IWS) for the estimation of the crown diameters with the help of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, we validated the accuracies of the two methods by comparing the UAV results with ground measurements. The results showed higher agreement between field and remote-sensed data for heights than for crown diameters based on RMSE%, which were in the range 11.42–12.62 for height and 14.29–18.56 for crown diameter. Overall, the accuracy of the results was acceptable and showed that the methods were feasible for detecting tree heights and crown diameter. [Termes IGN] variabilité génétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Key message : Despite variable dynamics of genetic diversification at the different altitudinal levels, strong gene flow tends to standardize larch genetic diversity: the larch forest distributed along the altitudinal gradient can be regarded as a single population.
Context : While in forest tree species many studies focus on the structure of the genetic diversity at the natural range and at the forest stand levels, few studies have worked at intermediate levels like the landscape level.
Aims : We tried to determine to what degree altitude variation can affect the genetic diversity and the local structure of the genetic diversity of European larch (Larix decidua Miller) at the landscape level.
Methods : Using microsatellite markers, we determined the between- and within-plot genetic structure and the spatial genetic structure (SGS) of four altitudinal plots distributed between 1,350 and 2,300 m a.s.l. in a European larch forest located in the French Alps.
Results : A homogenous neutral genetic structure was detected along this gradient. The intensity of the SGS was found to be stronger at 2,300 m and decreased at the 2,000-m plot. It was low or non-existent at the 1,700- and 1,350-m altitudinal levels.
Conclusion : Our results suggest that the genetic structure observed at the landscape level in this European larch forest was only slightly affected by climatic variation, human activities, or historical events. However, the variation of intensity of the SGS within the altitudinal plots indicates the existence of variable genetic dynamics, despite the globally uniform genetic structure along the altitudinal gradient.

[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Context : The competition-density principle, which can mathematically be described by the competition-density rule, is an important principle in plant ecology. The border line relationship is the self-thinning rule. Despite the importance of both rules for forest management, they have been fit for few species.
Aims : The aim of this study is to compare competition-density rule and self-thinning rule in particular with respect to potential density for 15 species from the Austrian National Forest Inventory (ANFI).
Methods : The self-thinning line was estimated using quantile regression. The competition-density rule was fit as four- and as three-parameter model, where the fourth parameter was substituted (a) with a specific slope from the self-thinning line estimated from the ANFI and (b) Reineke’s slope (−1.605).
Results : Potential density was highest for Austrian pine and Norway spruce, followed by silver fir and Scots pine; it was considerably lower for European larch, stone pine and broadleaf species. Species-specific slopes of the self-thinning line ranged between −1.5 and −2.0 and were significantly different from Reineke’s slope for Norway spruce, European larch and European beech.
Conclusions : Using robust estimation techniques, both competition-density rule and self-thinning line can also be fit for minor species, providing an important guide for practical forest management.
