[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Knowledge, especially the special knowledge about land use itself, is an indispensable component for guiding the whole process of land use data generalization. In this study, such knowledge is classified into two broad types, i.e. general knowledge and thematic knowledge. General knowledge covers the basic and common restrictions and specifications for generalization of geographic data. Thematic knowledge describes the special restrictions and specifications for a specific geographic data application. The paper emphasizes the use of thematic knowledge in detail for land use data generalization. Three main types of thematic knowledge are identified, i.e. nature-based, culture-based and application-specific. Such thematic knowledge is then represented using the so-called production-rule method to become generalization rules. These rules are built in a prototype system to guide the implementation of land use data generalization. Real-life data have been used for testing and very promising results have been obtained from this system.

[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Cartographic generalisation deals with the correct symbolisation and the placement of the cartographic objects and the labels on the map. This lengthy task has to balance many visually conflicting objectives and has historically been performed by the trained, artistic, and to some degree subjective eye of Cartographers. The automation of this process has tong been regarded as the “Holy Grail” of cartography by academics, mapping agencies and software providers alike. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) With the increasing availability of small mobile computers, there is also an increasing demand for visualizing cartographic objects on those devices. Prominent applications are location based services in general, and car and pedestrian navigation in particular. In order to be able to offer both detail and overview of a spatial situation, the devices have to provide flexible zooming in and out in real-time. The presentation of spatial data sets in different zoom levels or resolutions is usually achieved using generalization operations. In this paper, we will describe an approach to decompose generalization methods into elementary operations that can then be implemented in a continuous way. For example in the case of displacement, an object will not simply jump from one position to the other, but slowly shifted from its original position to the new one. In the case of simplification of building ground plans, the elementary operations e.g. care for removing extrusions or intrusions of buildings, as well as offsets. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Building generalization is a difficult operation due to the complexity of the spatial distribution of buildings and for reasons of spatial recognition. In this study, building generalization is decomposed into two steps, i.e. building grouping and generalization execution. The neighbourhood model in urban morphology provides global constraints for guiding the global partitioning of building sets on the whole map by means of roads and rivers, by which enclaves, blocks, superblocks or neighbourhoods are formed, whereas the local constraints from Gestalt principles provide criteria for the further grouping of enclaves, blocks, superblocks and/or neighbourhoods. In the grouping process, graph theory, Delaunay triangulation and the Voronoi diagram are employed as supporting techniques. After grouping, some useful information, such as the sum of the building's area, the mean separation and the standard deviation of the separation of buildings, is attached to each group. By means of the attached information, an appropriate operation is selected to generalize the corresponding groups. Indeed, the methodology described brings together a number of welldeveloped theories/techniques, including graph theory, Delaunay triangulation, the Voronoi diagram, urban morphology and Gestalt theory, in such a way that multiscale products can be derived.
