[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationIndex. décimale : MX Mémoires divers Résumé : (Auteur) A successful implementation of a cartographic expert system for automated map generalization requires formalization of cartographic knowledge in the form of production rules. Unfortunately, empirical research for the acquisition of cartographic knowledge is lacking, and forms a major impediment towards the development of a full-scale expert system. The main motivation for this research is to contribute to the acquisition and formalization of cartographic knowledge through a computer-assisted inventory of the Austrian National Topographic Map Series. The inventory includes settlement, transportation and hydrographic features from the same geographical region at 1:50,000, 1:200,000 and 1:500,000. Map feature information is archived using a relational database, to facilitate comparisons between map scales. Cartographic information acquired through queries of the relational database leads to the formulation of prototype rules. One set of rules describes the selection behavior of settlement, hydrography and transportation under changing map scale. A second set of rules expresses the degree of simplification for settlement objects through multiple scale. The possible influence of different building functionalities and regional types is taken into consideration as well. The interaction between different map domains or different map objects is formulated in a third set of rules. Some rules seem to be very obvious, others express very detailed information. Further comparative empirical studies, focused on the acquisition of cartographic knowledge, will throw light upon the usefulness of the inventory approach and the validity of prototype rules derived from it. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) A solution to the automated generalisation of one particular class of geographical objects is proposed. Those objects are area patches distributed over a two-dimensional space. They are assumed to be semantically identical ; hence the competition for space occurs on the basis of geometric considerations only. The solution proposed is algorithmic, stepwise and works for vector data only. The steps include data preprocessing, area expansion and contraction, elimination, reselection, aggregation, displacement, integrity check, smoothing and reduction. Among the generalisation rules which were applied are : (1) emphasis on larger patches at the expense of smaller ones, (2) preservation of the overall figure/group relationship, (3) partial topological integrity, and (4) differential displacement according to patch area. Results are discussed within the wider framework of topographic map generalisation where diversified objects must be simultaneously generalised. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The project described in this article had two primary objectives : to design a strategy for terrain generalization that is adaptive to different terrain types, scales, and map purposes, and to implement and evaluate some components of this approach to assess its potential. The strategy includes three different generalization methods : a global filtering procedure, a selective (iterative) filtering method, and a heuristic approach based on the generalization of the terrain's structure lines. For a given generalization problem that is constrained by the terrain character, map objective, scale, graphic limits, and data quality, the appropriate technique is selected through structure and process recognition procedures. Some of the key components of the strategy have been implemented and some experiments were conducted. Other parts were covered by proposing models that could serve as implementation guidelines. Our work was intended to break ground for future research. Recommendations for appropriate parameter settings in relation to scale, terrain character, and other controls of generalization still need to be established. Some alternatives for knowledge acquisition for cartographic generalization are proposed, including the development of a highlevel interactive "terrain generalizer”.
