Distributing the generalization process is the only way to make them scalable and usable in practice. But map generalization is a highly contextual process, and the surroundings of a generalized map feature needs to be known to generalize the feature, which is a problem as distribution might partition the dataset and parallelize the processing of each part. This paper proposes experiments to evaluate the past propositions to distribute map generalization, and to identify the main remaining issues. The past propositions to distribute map generalization are first discussed, and then the experiment hypotheses and apparatus are described. The experiments confirmed that regular partitioning was the quickest strategy, but less effective when taking context into account. The geographical partitioning, though less effective for now, is quite promising regarding the quality of the results as it better integrates the geographical context. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article demonstrates a working method to automatically detect and prune portions of waterbody polygons to support creation of a multi-scale hydrographic database. Water features are sensitive to scale change, therefore multiple representations are required to maintain visual and geographic logic at smaller scales. Partial pruning of polygonal features – such as long, sinuous reservoir arms, stream channels too narrow at the target scale, and islands that begin to coalesce – entails concurrent management of the length and width of polygonal features as well as integrating pruned polygons with other generalized point and linear hydrographic features to maintain stream network connectivity. The implementation follows data representation standards developed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) for the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Portions of polygonal rivers, streams, and canals are automatically characterized for width, length, and connectivity. This article describes an algorithm for automatic detection and subsequent processing, and shows results for a sample of NHD subbasins in different landscape conditions in the US. Many point reduction and simplification algorithms have been developed for this purpose. During the last three decades, several attempts have been made to develop approaches of generalization that adapt to the geometric properties of the processed lines. They typically incorporate line segmentation based on quantitative descriptions of the line shape. Little attention has been paid to the cases in which heterogeneous lines of different geometric character are mixed in one dataset. One common example is administrative borders, which often contain natural and artificial, smooth and sharp, schematic and non-schematic, and regular and irregular shapes. The tuning of the simplification algorithm based on a quantitative description of the shape would be ineffective here, since different algorithms must be applied to lines of different characters. In this article, we present a general method and generalization model for the simplification of such datasets. The properties of schematism, smoothness and regularity are used to differentiate various line characters. Three line characters, including irregular non-schematic, irregular schematic and regular orthogonal schematic, were selected for the current study. The developed generalization model consists of preprocessing, processing and postprocessing stages. Line segmentation based on the detection of different characters is performed during the preprocessing stage. Then, Li–Openshaw, Douglas–Peucker and orthogonal simplification are applied to the appropriate segments in the processing stage. Postprocessing enables the addition of extra regularity to the simplified shape. A visual and quantitative assessment of the results is provided and demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed approach in comparison with the global application of a single simplification algorithm. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Among approaches for automated generalization of vector data, we focus on the multi-agent paradigm: cartographic objects are modeled as agents (autonomous objects) that apply generalization algorithms to themselves to satisfy cartographic constraints. Several agent levels are considered, for example, individual agents, such as a building, and agents representing a group of agents, such as an urban block composed of the surrounding roads and contained buildings. Several multi-agent models were proposed to automate the orchestration of map generalization processes. Existing multi-agent generalization models have different approaches to manage the relations between agent levels. In this paper, we unify existing models, adapting a multi-level simulation model, to simplify interactions between agents in different levels. We propose the DIOGEN model, in which the principle of interactions between agents of different levels is adapted to constraint-driven cartographic generalization. DIOGEN unifies three existing multi-agent generalization models (AGENT, CartACom and GAEL), combine their behaviors and take advantage of their skills. Our proposal is evaluated on different use cases: instances of topographic mapping, and mapping of hiking routes over topographic data as an example of thematic mapping. In the literature on real-time map generalisation, however, corresponding methods that resolve cartographic conflicts by deformation of the underlying map space together with the map foreground, are underrepresented. This paper demonstrates how the concept of a malleable space can be applied as a part of the generalisation process and incorporated into the overall methodology of point generalisation. Two different algorithms are used, a density-equalising cartogram algorithm and Laplacian smoothing. Both methods work in real-time and are datadriven. In addition, they allow for a parameterisation in combi-nation with a quadtree data structure, as well as a combination with 'classic' generalisation operators (e.g. selection, aggregation, displacement) based on the quadtree. The quadtree serves both as a spatial index for fast retrieval and search of points, and as a density estimator to inform generalisation operators. The use of the quadtree as a common spatial index provides a tool to combine variable-scale maps with classic generalisation. A combination of the two allows, at small map scales, the maintenance of detail in dense areas and data reduction in sparse areas. Additionally, it facilitates building a modular workflow for real-time map generalisation.
