[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate change is predicted to increase temperature and seasonal temperature variance in Great Britain (GB). Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr) is the most important tree species used in commercial plantations throughout Europe and GB. Frosts that occur outside the winter dormancy period can negatively affect trees, since they happen after dehardening. Damage can be especially severe at bud burst, before emerging needles mature and form protective barriers. Here, we modelled the impact of climate change on frost sensitivity in Sitka spruce with temperature data from five climate projections. The UKCP09 climate model HadRm3 uses emission scenario SRESA1B for the years 2020–2099. The global and downscaled versions of the UKCP18 HadGem3 model use the emissions scenario RCP 8.5. The global model CMCC-CM uses the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 emissions scenarios. The predictions based on these models were compared with results from gridded historical data for the period 1960–2015. Three indicators that assessed the frost sensitivity of Sitka spruce were explored: the total number of frosts between the onset of dehardening and the end of summer, which use three different temperature thresholds (Index 10°C, 1–3°C, 1–5°C); the total number of frosts after bud burst (Index 2); the number of days with minimum temperatures below the resistance level (backlashes) during the hardening–dehardening period (September–August) (Index 3). The indices were validated with historical data for frost damage across GB, and Index 1–3°C, Index 1–5°C and Index 3 were shown to be significantly correlated. The frequency of all frosts and backlashes is expected to decrease with climate change, especially under higher emissions scenarios. Post-bud burst frosts have been historically very rare in GB and remain so with climate change. Downscaled regional climate models detect geographic variability within GB and improve prediction of overall trends in frost damage in comparison to global climate change models for GB. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Accurate spatial information regarding forest types and tree species is immensely important for efficient forest management strategies. In the UK and particularly in Wales, creating a spatial inventory of larch (Larix sps.) plantations that encompasses both the public and private forests has become one of the highest priorities of woodland management policies, particularly given the need to respond to the rapid spread of Phytophthora ramorum fungal disease. For directing disease control measures, national scale, regularly updated mapping of larch distributions is essential. In this study, we applied a ExtraTree classifier machine learning algorithm to multi-year (June 2015 and December 2019) multi-path composites of vegetation indices derived from 10 m Sentinel-2 satellite data (spectral range used in this study: 490–2190 nm) to map the extent of larch plantations across Wales. For areas identified as woody vegetation, areas under larch plantations were associated with a needle-leaved leaf type and deciduous phenology, allowing differentiation from broad-leaved deciduous and needle-leaved evergreen types. The model accuracies for validation, which included overall accuracy, producer’s and user’s accuracies, exceeded 95% and the F1-score was greater than 0.97 for all forest types. Comparison against an independent reference dataset indicated all map accuracies above 90% (F1-score higher than 0.92) with the lowest value being 90.3% for the producer’s accuracy for larch. Short wave infrared and red-edge based indices were particularly useful for discriminating larch from other forest types. Capacity for updating information on clear-felling of larch stands through annual updates of a woody mask was also introduced. The resulting maps of larch plantations for Wales are the most current for Wales covering public as well as private woodlands and can be routinely updated. The classification approach has potential to be transferred to a wider geographical area given the availability of open-source multi-year Sentienl-2 datasets and robust calibration datasets. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The best options to parametrize a radiative transfer model change according to the response variable used for fitting. To predict transmitted radiation, the turbid medium approach performs much better than the porous envelop, especially when accounting for the intra-specific variations in leaf area density but crown shape has limited effects. When fitting with tree growth data, the porous envelop approach combined with the more complex crown shape provides better results. When using a joint optimization with both variables, the better options are the turbid medium and the more detailed approach for describing crown shape and leaf area density.
Context: Solar radiation transfer is a key process of tree growth dynamics in forest.
Aims: Determining the best options to parametrize a forest radiative transfer model in heterogeneous oak and beech stands from Belgium.
Methods: Calibration and evaluation of a forest radiative transfer module coupled to a spatially explicit tree growth model were repeated for different configuration options (i.e., turbid medium vs porous envelope to calculate light interception by trees, crown shapes of contrasting complexity to account for their asymmetry) and response variables used for fitting (transmitted radiation and/or tree growth data).
Results: The turbid medium outperformed the porous envelope approach. The more complex crown shapes enabling to account for crown asymmetry improved performances when including growth data in the calibration.
Conclusion: Our results provide insights on the options to select when parametrizing a forest radiative 3D-crown transfer model depending on the research or application objectives.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Tree plantations have been proposed as suitable carbon sinks to mitigate climate change. Drought may reduce their carbon uptake, increasing their vulnerability to stress and affecting their growth recovery and resilience. We investigated the recent growth rates and responses to the climate and drought in eight Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) plantations located along a wide climate gradient from wetter sites in south-eastern France and north Spain to dry sites in south-eastern Spain. The cedar growth increased in response to the elevated precipitation from the prior winter to the current summer, but the influence of winter precipitation on growth gained importance in the driest sites. The growth responsiveness to climate and drought peaked in those dry sites, but the growth resilience did not show a similar gradient. The Atlas cedar growth was driven by the total precipitation during the hydrological year and this association strengthened from the 1980s onwards, a pattern related to the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). High winter NAO indices and drier conditions were associated with lower growth. At the individual level, growth resilience was related to tree age, while growth recovery and year-to-year growth variability covaried. Plantations’ resilience to drought depends on both climate and tree-level features. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The structure and composition of temperate old-growth oak forests are reviewed based on 108 case studies about 175 stands. The stands were classified as dry, dry-mesic and mesic forest types and the variables (density, basal area, size distribution, dead wood volume) were compared among them. Compared to the global range of this forest type, the United States was overrepresented, while West and Central Asia, Europe and Central America were underrepresented. In mesic oak forests the basal area and density of large trees were higher than in dry stands, while tree density and sapling density were lower. The proportion of oaks in tree and sapling layers were the highest in dry and lowest in mesic forests. The size distribution of trees followed negative exponential or rotated sigmoid types. In dry habitats all size categories are dominated by oaks, while in mesic type, only large ones followed the same trend. The volume of dead wood and the proportion of downed dead wood increased along the humidity gradient. In stands with repeated measurements, basal area and relative density of oaks decreased in the last decades. The understanding of the structure and composition of temperate old-growth oak forests is necessary for their restoration and application of close to nature forestry principles.
