[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The objective was to compare the evapotranspiration of cotton (Gossypium sp. L.) estimated by the SEBAL model and the FAO-56 method, throughout the phenological cycle of the plant on eight fields located in the upper area of the Rio das Mortes basin, State of Mato Grosso—Brazil. Images from the Landsat 8 satellite were used under the Geographic Information Systems environment through the capabilities of the QGIS 3.6.2 and GRASS 7.6.1 software. The reference evapotranspiration was determined by the FAO Penman–Monteith method implementing the Ref-ET software and data from the Campo Verde meteorological station of INMET—Brazil. The R software was applied to the statistical analyses of correlation and regression. The dataset of the available stages of the cotton phenological cycle shows a strong positive correlation, with approximately 68% of the evapotranspiration variation of the SEBAL model related to the estimates of the FAO-56 method. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) Structural complexity of trees is related to various ecological processes and ecosystem services. To support management for complexity, there is a need to assess the level of structural complexity objectively. The fractal-based box dimension (Db) provides a holistic measure of the structural complexity of individual trees. This study aimed to compare the structural complexity of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees assessed with Db that was generated with point cloud data from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and aerial imagery acquired with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). UAV imagery was converted into point clouds with structure from motion (SfM) and dense matching techniques. TLS and UAV measured Db-values were found to differ from each other significantly (TLS: 1.51 ± 0.11, UAV: 1.59 ± 0.15). UAV measured Db-values were 5% higher, and the range was wider (TLS: 0.81–1.81, UAV: 0.23–1.88). The divergence between TLS and UAV measurements was found to be explained by the differences in the number and distribution of the points and the differences in the estimated tree heights and number of boxes in the Db-method. The average point density was 15 times higher with TLS than with UAV (TLS: 494,000, UAV 32,000 points/tree), and TLS received more points below the midpoint of tree heights (65% below, 35% above), while UAV did the opposite (22% below, 78% above). Compared to the field measurements, UAV underestimated tree heights more than TLS (TLS: 34 cm, UAV: 54 cm), resulting in more boxes of Db-method being needed (4–64%, depending on the box size). Forest structure (two thinning intensities, three thinning types, and a control group) significantly affected the variation of both TLS and UAV measured Db-values. Still, the divergence between the two approaches remained in all treatments. However, TLS and UAV measured Db-values were consistent, and the correlation between them was 75%. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest management has the potential to contribute to the removal of greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere via carbon sequestration and storage. To identify management actions that will maximize carbon removal and storage over the long term, models are needed that accurately and realistically represent forest responses to changing climate. The most widely used growth and yield model in the United States (U.S.), the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), which also forms the basis for several forest carbon calculators, does not currently include the direct effect of climate variation on tree growth. We incorporated the effects of climate on tree diameter growth by combining tree-ring data with forest inventory data to parameterize a suite of alternative models characterizing the growth of three dominant tree species in the arid and moisture-limited state of Utah. These species, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws, Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca Mayr (Franco), and Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., encompass the full elevational range of montane forest types. The alternative models we considered differed progressively from the current FVS large-tree diameter growth model, first by changing to an annual time step, then by adding interannual climate effects, followed by model simplification (removal of predictors), and finally, complexification, including effects of spatial variation in climate and two-way interactions between predictors. We validated diameter growth predictions from these models with independent observations, and evaluated model performance in terms of accuracy, precision, and bias. We then compared predictions of future growth made by the existing large-tree diameter growth model used in FVS, i.e., without climate effects, to those of our updated models, including those with climate effects. We found that simpler models of tree growth outperform the current FVS model, and that the incorporation of climate effects improves model performance for two out of three species, in which growth is currently overpredicted by FVS. Diameter growth projected with improved, climate-sensitive models is less than the future tree growth projected by the current climate-insensitive FVS model. Tree rings can be used to identify and incorporate drivers of growth variation into a stand-level growth and yield model, giving more accurate predictions of the carbon uptake potential of forests under climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Rare domestic tree species are increasingly being viewed as promising alternatives and additions to current main tree species in forests facing climate change. For a feasible management of these rare species, it is, however, necessary to know their growth patterns and space requirements. This information has been lacking in management and science up to now. Our study investigated the basic crown allometries of four rare domestic tree species (European hornbeam, European white elm, field maple and wild service tree) and compared them to the more established and assessable European beech and oak (sessile oak and pedunculate oak). For our analysis, we used data from eight temporary research plots located on seven sites across south-eastern Germany, augmented by data from long-term plots. Using quantile regression, we investigated the fundamental relationships between crown projection area and diameter, and height and diameter. Subsequently, we used a mixed-effect model to detect the dependence of crown allometry on different stand variables. We derived maximum stem numbers per hectare for each species at different stand heights, thus providing much-needed practical guidelines for forest managers. In the early stages of stand development, we found that European white elm and field maple can be managed with higher stem numbers than European beech, similar to those of oak. European hornbeam and wild service tree require lower stem numbers, similar to European beech. However, during first or second thinnings, we hypothesise that the rare domestic tree species must be released from competitors, as shade tolerance and competitiveness decrease with age. Furthermore, we argue that thinnings must be performed at a higher frequency in stands with admixed European beech because of the species’ high shade tolerance. When properly managed, rare species can reach target diameters similar to oak and beech. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Since the adoption of European Union Council Directive 92/43 on the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora, some opposition has arisen among owners and managers of land affected by the directive. Some studies have indicated that some of this opposition has found expression in subsequent arson fires in these areas. This article analyses the occurrence of arson fires in the SACs (Special Areas of Conservation) included in the European ecological network, Natura 2000, in Galicia (Spain), more specifically in the montes vecinales en mano común (MVMCs), which are privately owned collective lands. We tested whether the declaration of SACs had a statistical impact on the forest fire regime in the period 1999–2014. The analyses focused on the sub-periods of 1999–2004 and 2005–2014, i.e., before and after the approval of the list of sites of community importance in the study area in December 2004. The results obtained show that, after the declaration of protection, there was a statistically significant increase in the area burnt by fire in these areas, mainly on private estates. We also found that the percentage of arson fires after 2004 was higher in SACs than in other territorial units. We found that the percentage of arson fires was reduced less in SACs than in other territorial units. Furthermore, we found that the area burnt per fire after 2004 in SACs was almost double that in the MVMC-SACs (12.04 ha versus 6.64 ha), so it can be concluded that the conservationist policies of the Natura 2000 network in Galicia have not had a positive effect on the forest fire regime.
