[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The oak (Quercus robur L.) regeneration intensity was assessed in the core area of the Białowieża National Park (BNP) in Poland with respect to the selected ecological factors. The emphasis was placed on the response of oak regeneration to disturbances, including the large-scale dieback of spruce stands. Defining their effect could help predicting the role of oak in naturally developing lowland forest ecosystems in the European hemiboreal zone. The results of the study challenge the opinion that the ‘lime-oak-hornbeam forest’ is a ‘climax’ community, confirming a very poor regeneration represented by only two saplings taller than 0.5 m per hectare. By contrast, in spruce-dominated communities, from 49 to 848 taller saplings per hectare were found. The occurrence of saplings was associated with discontinuous canopy of late seral stage of stands, as well as with large gaps. Most of the best quality grown-up oak saplings developed in the immediate neighbourhood of spruce logs. The results of the research indicate that ‘lime-oak-hornbeam forest’ (Tilio-Carpinetum) should be rather perceived as a transient community, evolved from relict, culturally modified, oak woodlands. Because spruce had become a dominating species only after abandoning in mid-1800s the historical regime of anthropogenic disturbances (involving frequent forest fires), the observed phenomena related to the disintegration of spruce stands had probably no precedent over the last 500 years. To confirm whether the massive decline of spruce stands will finally result in the successful establishment of the new canopy oak generation, both in Białowieża and other forests of hemiboreal zone, further research is needed. However, there are few studies that assess the capability of remote sensing observations to monitor ecosystem phenology along elevation gradients, despite their relevance under climate change. We investigated the potential of medium resolution remotely sensed data to monitor the elevation variations in the seasonal dynamics of a temperate deciduous broadleaf forested ecosystem. Further, we explored the impact of elevation on the onset of spring leafing. This study was based on the analysis of multi-annual time-series of VEGETATION data acquired over the French Pyrenees Mountain Region (FPMR), in conjunction with simultaneous ground-based observations of leaf phenology made for two dominant tree species in the region (oak and beech). The seasonal variations in the perpendicular vegetation index (PVI) were analyzed during a five-year period (2002 to 2006). The five years of data were averaged into a one sole year in order to fill the numerous large spatio-temporal gaps due to cloud and snow presence – frequent in mountains – without altering the temporal resolution. Since a VEGETATION pixel (1 km²) includes several types of land cover, the broadleaf forest-specific seasonal dynamics of PVI was reconstructed pixel-by-pixel using a temporal unmixing method based on a non-parametric statistical approach. The spatial pattern of the seasonal response of PVI was clearly consistent with the relief. Nevertheless the elevational or geographic range of tree species, which differ in their phenology sensitivity to temperature, also has a significant impact on this pattern. The reduction in the growing season length with elevation was clearly observable from the delay in the increase of PVI in spring and from the advance of its decrease in the fall. The elevation variations in leaf flushing timing were estimated from the temporal change in PVI in spring over the study area. They were found to be consistent with those measured in situ (R2 > 0.95). It was deduced that, over FPMR, the mean delay of leaf flushing timing for every 100 m increase in elevation was estimated be approximately 2.3 days. The expected estimation error of satellite-based leaf unfolding date for a given elevation was approximately 2 days. This accuracy can be considered as satisfactory since it would allow us to detect changes in leafing timing of deciduous broadleaf forests with a magnitude equivalent to that due to an elevation variation of 100 m (2.3 days on average), or in other words, to that caused by a variation in the mean annual air temperature of 0.5 °C. Although averaging the VEGETATION data over five years led to a loss of interannual information, it was found to be a robust approach to characterise the elevation variations in spring leafing and its long-term trends. Par l'étude et la comparaison de modèles d'impact, l'essence apparaît très menacée et le risque, mesuré par la combinaison de la vulnérabilité et des enjeux, est majeur dans Nord-Est de la France et le long du littoral nord-atlantique. L'incertitude qui peut exister est quantifiée par l'analyse des divergences ente modèles. Des perspectives pour l'adaptation et une meilleure quantification du risque sont proposées. However most observations have been derived from samples of restricted size, whose representativeness at a regional forest scale is questionable. National forest inventories provide an interesting perspective for both regional scale assessment of these trends and the investigation of their variations over environmental gradients, but have been little used.
The aim of our work was to carry out an exploratory modelling analysis of productivity changes, based on the French national forest inventory data. The objectives were: (i) to assess recent trends in forest productivity and to investigate a possible recent decline as found in previous studies; and (ii) to investigate trend variations relative to site fertility factors. We focused on pure and even-aged stands of common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in north-eastern France, already documented from previous studies based on retrospective data.
The dataset consisted of 925 temporary plots inventoried between 1979 and 2007. We developed two regression models of stand basal area increment (BAI) against stand developmental stage (dominant height), site fertility (site index in the SI model, environmental indicators in the EI model) and stand density (relative density index). The effect of calendar date was tested in order to investigate possible historical trends. Site fertility–date interactions were also tested to investigate the site-dependence of trends.
The fitted models showed a high goodness of fit (adj. R2 over 0.69). We showed an increase in stand BAI of 27.8% between 1977 and 1987, (10.4% between 1979 and 1987). Stand BAI then decreased by approximately 5% between 1987 and 2004. We thus confirmed the hypothesis of a recent decline in common beech vitality in its temperate range. The chronologies clearly depicted the effect of severe drought events (1976 and 2003), pointing out the predominant role of water availability in the changes observed.
