A major aim of the experiments was examination of existing algorithms for soil moisture retrieval from active and passive microwave remote sensors under high vegetation water content conditions. The data obtained from the passive and active L and S band sensor (PALS) along with physical variables measured by in situ sampling have been used in this study to demonstrate the sensitivity of the instrument to soil moisture and perform soil moisture retrieval using statistical regression and physical modeling techniques. The land cover conditions in the region studied were predominantly soybean and corn crops with average vegetation water contents ranging from 0 to ~ 5 kg/m2. The PALS microwave sensitivity to soil moisture under these vegetation conditions was investigated for both passive and active measurements. The performance of the PALS instrument and retrieval algorithms has been analyzed, indicating soil moisture retrieval errors of approximately 0.04 g/g gravimetric soil moisture. Statistical regression techniques have been shown to perform satisfactorily with soil moisture retrieval error of around 0.05 g/g gravimetric soil moisture. The retrieval errors were higher for the corn than for the soybean fields due to the higher vegetation water content of the corn crops. However, the algorithms performed satisfactorily over the full range of vegetation conditions. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) A growing number of studies have focused on evaluating spectral indices in terms of their sensitivity to vegetation biophysical parameters, as well as to external factors affecting canopy reflectance. In this context, leaf and canopy radiative transfer models are valuable for modeling and understanding the behavior of such indices. In the present work, PROSPECT and SAILH models have been used to simulate a wide range of crop canopy reflectances in an attempt to study the sensitivity of a set of vegetation indices to green leaf area index (LAI), and to modify some of them in order to enhance their responsivity to LAI variations. The aim of the paper was to present a method for minimizing the effect of leaf chlorophyll content on the prediction of green LAI, and to develop new algorithms that adequately predict the LAI of crop canopies. Analyses based on both simulated and real hyperspectral data were carried out to compare performances of existing vegetation indices (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index [NDVI], Renormalized Difference Vegetation Index [RDVI], Modified Simple Ratio [MSR], Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index [SAVI], Soil and Atmospherically Resistant Vegetation Index [SARVI], MSAVI, Triangular Vegetation Index [TVI], and Modified Chlorophyll Absorption Ratio Index [MCARI]) and to design new ones (MTVII, MCARII, MTV12, and MCAR12) that are both less sensitive to chlorophyll content variations and linearly related to green LAI. Thorough analyses showed that the above existing vegetation indices were either sensitive to chlorophyll concentration changes or affected by saturation at high LAI levels. Conversely, two of the spectral indices developed as a part of this study, a modified triangular vegetation index (MTV12) and a modified chlorophyll absorption ratio index (MCAR12), proved to be the best predictors of green LAI. Related predictive algorithms were tested on CASI (Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager) hyperspectral images and, then, validated using ground truth measurements. The latter were collected simultaneously with image acquisition for different crop types (soybean, corn, and wheat), at different growth stages, and under various fertilization treatments. Prediction power analysis of proposed algorithms based on MCAR12 and MTV12 resulted in agreements between modeled and ground measurement of non-destructive LAI, with coefficients of determination (r) being 0.98 for soybean, 0.89 for com, and 0.74 for wheat. The corresponding RMSE for LAI were estimated at 0.28, 0.46, and 0.85, respectively. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) In order to improve biodiversity management in the Wellington region of New Zealand, it is necessary to make an inventory of the indigenous forest-where is it, and what type is it? The single greatest impediment to making a spatially (i.e., 1:50,000 scale) and thematically detailed inventory from satellite imagery has been the topography of the three mountainous ranges in the Wellington region. The effective irradiance of incoming light varies with slope orientation, as does the proportion of light that is reflected towards the satellite (the bidirectional reflectance). In this paper, we show how satellite imagery may be processed to standardised spectral reflectance, which is a property of the vegetation alone, independent of sun position, slope, and view direction. Because of this, the use of automatic methods to map vegetation and provide spatially and thematically detailed maps is greatly simplified. Using this method, we produce a land-cover map of the Wellington region, with eight classes, to a classification accuracy of approximately 95%. We also show how the proportions of conifer, broadleaved, and beech trees may be determined for indigenous forest to provide a framework for forest-type inventory. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) A syntaxonomic revision of the holm-oak and cork-oak woods of Sardinia is here presented. The geological and phytoclimatic heterogeneity of the island and the wide ecological amplitude of the holm-oak, result in a large phytocoenotic diversity of the Sardinian holm-oak woods. These are referred to five associations: Pyro amygdaliformis-Quercetum ilicis, Prasio majoris-Quercetum ilicis ass. nova, Galio scabri-Quercetum ilicis, Saniculo europaeae-Quercetum ilicis ass. nova and Aceri monspessulani-Quercetum ilicis. From the phytogeographic point of view, in the subhumid-humid, meso-supramediterranean bioclimatic belts of Sardinia the presence of the association Galio scabri-Quercetum ilicis is found to be remarkable.
As far as the cork-oak woods are concerned, the associations Galio scabri-Quercetum suberis and Violo dehnhardtii-Quercetum suberis ass. nova are here reported.
The Sardinian-Corsican holm-oak and cork-oak woods define the western limit of the European central-Mediterranean alliance Fraxino orni-Quercion ilicis of which in Sardinia there are many characteristic and differential entities. In the Sardinian-Corsican holm-oak woods, however, there are endemic entities (Arum pictum ssp. pictum, Helleborus lividus ssp. corsicus, Digitalis purpurea var. gyspergerae, Quercus ichnusaePaeonia morisii) and other western-centred entities with little or no spread on the Italian peninsula (Galium scabrum, Clematis cirrhosa and Teucrium scorodonia). These entities allow the proposal that within the alliance Fraxino orni-Quercion ilicis can be recognised the new Sardinian-Corsican suballiance Clematido cirrhosae-Quercenion ilicisPrasio majoris-Quercetum ilicis ass. nova), which is endemic to the Sardinian and Corsican sectors of the Italo-Tyrrhenian Province. Consequently, the suballiance Fraxino orni-Quercenion ilicis, which is the typical of the alliance Fraxino orni-Quercion ilicis, has also been proposed.

[Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a new sintaxonomical scheme for Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeaeQuercetalia pubescenti-petraeae order occurs in the study area in the form of five alliances: Quercion pubescenti-petraeae (suball.: Buxo-Quercenion pubescentis), Carpinion orientalisCampanulo-Ostryenion, Laburno-Ostryenion stat. nov.; Lauro-Quercenion pubescentis and Cytiso-Quercenion pubescentis), Teucrio siculi-Quercion cerridis nom. conserv. propos. (suball.: Teucrio-Quercenion cerridis suball. nov., Ptilostemo-Quercenion cerridis); Pino-Quercion congestae (suball.: Pino-Quercenion congestaeQuercenion virgilianae suball. nov.) and Erythronio-Quercion petraeae. The Quercion pubescenti-petraeae is a sintaxon with a sub-continental character and within the Italian Peninsula it is restricted to Ligurian-Piedmontese Apennine in the form of the sub-alliance Buxo-Quercenion pubescentis. Carpinion orientalis is a sintaxon with oceanic/suboceanic features, which is widely distributed along the entire Italian Peninsula. It occurs mainly on limestone substrates forming woodlands which can be potential vegetation types and also woods of secondary origin and evolution. The Teucrio-Quercion cerridis is an alliance which is widely distributed within central and southern Italy, where it finds its coenological optimum on acid, subacid or neutral substrates such as volcanic outcrops, flysch, sandstones or clayey-arenaceous sediments. In this alliance are included both thermophilous Quercus cerris and Quercus petraea woodlands of Tuscany, Umbria and northern Latium, together with Quercus cerris and Quercus frainetto woodlands of southern Italy. The alliance Pino-Quercion congestae is restricted to Sicily and southern Calabria, and includes Quercus virgilianaQ. dalechampii hilly woodlands, and also sub-montane and lower-montane Quercus congesta woods. Finally, Erythronio-Quercion petraeae behaves as a typical mesophilous and microthermic alliance which exhibits clear biogeographical similarities with towards the central-european woodlands. This alliance is restricted to the northern Apennines where it is in geo-serial contact with Carpinion betuli, Quercion robori-petraeae and Fagion woodlands.
