[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) We compared results derived using three different approaches to assess the suitability of common tree species on the Franconian Plateau in southern Germany under projected warmer and drier climate conditions in the period 2061-2080. The study area is currently a relatively warm and dry region of Germany. We calculated species distribution models (SDMs) using information on species’ climate envelopes to predict regional species spectra under 63 different climate change scenarios. We complemented this with fine-scale ecological niche analysis using data from 51 vegetation surveys in seven forest reserves in the study area, and tree-ring analysis (TRA) from local populations of five tree species to quantify their sensitivity to climatic extreme years. The SDMs showed that predicted future climate change in the region remains within the climate envelope of certain species (e.g. Quercus petraea), whilst for e.g. Fagus sylvatica, future climate conditions in one third of the scenarios are too warm and dry. This was confirmed by the TRA: sensitivity to drought periods is lower for Q. petraea than for F. sylvatica. The niche analysis shows that the local ecological niches of Quercus robur and Fraxinus excelsior are mainly characterized by soils providing favorable water supply than by climate, and Pinus sylvestris (planted) is strongly influenced by light availability. The best adapted species for a warmer and potentially drier climate in the study region are Acer campestre, Sorbus torminalis, S. aria, Ulmus minor, and Tilia platyphyllos, which should therefore play a more prominent role in future climate-resilient mixed forest ecosystems. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Advances in computer vision and the parallel development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) allow for the extensive use of UAV in forest inventory and in indirect measurements of tree features. We used UAV-sensed high-resolution imagery through photogrammetry and Structure from Motion (SfM) to estimate tree heights and crown diameters. We reconstructed 3D structures from 2D image sequences for two study areas (25 × 25 m). Species composition for Plot 1 included Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) together with European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), whereas Plot 2 was mainly Norway spruce and Scots pine together with scattered individuals of European larch and Silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.). The involved workflow used canopy height models (CHMs) for the extraction of height, the smoothing of raster images for the determination of the local maxima, and Inverse Watershed Segmentation (IWS) for the estimation of the crown diameters with the help of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, we validated the accuracies of the two methods by comparing the UAV results with ground measurements. The results showed higher agreement between field and remote-sensed data for heights than for crown diameters based on RMSE%, which were in the range 11.42–12.62 for height and 14.29–18.56 for crown diameter. Overall, the accuracy of the results was acceptable and showed that the methods were feasible for detecting tree heights and crown diameter. [Termes IGN] sous-boisRésumé : (auteur) Ecological functions of a black alder riparian forest (Aegopodio-Alnetum glutinosae) as capacities for the provision of ecosystem services were analysed and indicated by an inductive (bottom-up) approach. In July 2015, species richness and diversity of the forest stand were analysed in Hlboká valley, near Husárka water reservoir, Tríbeč Mountains, western Slovakia, by phytocoenological relevé, aboveground biomass of the herb layer and litter mass were estimated by a harvest method. The quantitative data obtained for the forest vegetation were used for estimation of capacities (potentials) of the floodplain forest to provide non-market ecosystem services. The forage, melliferous and therapeutic potential were estimated and calculated by Jurko’s methods of ecological and socio-economic evaluations of vegetation. Aboveground biomass (production potential) of the forest understorey community was relatively high (seasonal maximum standing crop 59.03 g·m–2 in dry mass). The result of evaluation of the forage potential of the alder forest was higher than 50%, it means medium forage quality community. The melliferous potential was evaluated close to 190% (= high potential). The share of medicinal plants in the studied plant community was higher than 30%, referred to as extremely rich therapeutic potential. The analyses confirmed that the forest community represents high potentials for providing production ecosystem services. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Exploring the possibility to produce nation-wide forest attribute maps using stereophotogrammetry of aerial images, the national terrain model and data from the National Forest Inventory (NFI). The study areas are four image acquisition blocks in mid- and south Sweden. Regression models were developed and applied to 12.5 m × 12.5 m raster cells for each block and validation was done with an independent dataset of forest stands. Model performance was compared for eight different forest types separately and the accuracies between forest types clearly differs for both image- and LiDAR methods, but between methods the difference in accuracy is small at plot level. At stand level, the root mean square error in percent of the mean (RMSE%) were ranging: from 7.7% to 10.5% for mean height; from 12.0% to 17.8% for mean diameter; from 21.8% to 22.8% for stem volume; and from 17.7% to 21.1% for basal area. This study clearly shows that aerial images from the national image program together with field sample plots from the NFI can be used for large area forest attribute mapping. Growth responses of tree communities may depend on their past water status and on competition pressure. We investigated the effects of site water status, population density, and tree social status on tree growth resistance and resilience following the severe drought of 1976 in even-aged stands of sessile oak (Quercus petraea). We used retrospective growth data collected in permanent plots experiencing contrasted climatic and stand density conditions. We used boosted regression trees to calibrate a tree growth model over 1960–1975, which was then used to provide a baseline of expected tree growth following 1976. Growth dynamics during and after 1976 was examined using the ratio between observed and expected growths over 1976–1983. Tree radial growth was on average 0.6 times its expected values in 1976 and was still 0.63 times its expected value in 1977. Despite experiencing higher summer soil water deficit in 1976, trees growing in drier sites exhibited remarkably faster growth recovery than those in moister sites. Suppressed trees grown in higher density stands recovered their normal growth rate slower than dominant trees. Forest growth is evidenced to be more vulnerable to drought in moister than in drier sites. Competitive pressures also alter tree capacity to recover from a severe drought, accelerating suppression of smaller trees in high-density stands. These results highlight the role of acclimation and selection processes in tree community responses to present and future climates.
