This information is critical in assessing forest contribution towards ecosystem functioning and services, as well as their conservation status. This work aimed at assessing the applicability of the high resolution 8-band WorldView-2 multispectral dataset together with environmental variables in quantifying AGB and aboveground carbon stocks for three forest plantation species i.e. Eucalyptus dunii (ED), Eucalyptus grandis (EG) and Pinus taeda (PT) in uMgeni Catchment, South Africa. Specifically, the strength of the Worldview-2 sensor in terms of its improved imaging agilities is examined as an independent dataset and in conjunction with selected environmental variables. The results have demonstrated that the integration of high resolution 8-band Worldview-2 multispectral data with environmental variables provide improved AGB and AGCS estimates, when compared to the use of spectral data as an independent dataset. The use of integrated datasets yielded a high R2 value of 0.88 and RMSEs of 10.05 t ha−1 and 5.03 t C ha−1 for E. dunii AGB and carbon stocks; whereas the use of spectral data as an independent dataset yielded slightly weaker results, producing an R2 value of 0.73 and an RMSE of 18.57 t ha−1 and 09.29 t C ha−1. Similarly, high accurate results (R2 value of 0.73 and RMSE values of 27.30 t ha−1 and 13.65 t C ha−1) were observed from the estimation of inter-species AGB and carbon stocks. Overall, the findings of this work have shown that the integration of new generation multispectral datasets with environmental variables provide a robust toolset required for the accurate and reliable retrieval of forest aboveground biomass and carbon stocks in densely forested terrestrial ecosystems. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Variability and interrelations between wood density, water content, and related properties were analyzed by CT scanning of five species. Relative water content of lumens is proposed as the best complement to basic specific gravity for discrimination of species with respect to their functioning.
Context : X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an efficient tool for analysis of wood properties related to density and water content all along a tree stem. Basic specific gravity, an inherent property of the wood material, is well known and widely used in wood sciences.
Aims : The first aim of this study was to describe a method for mapping a set of wood properties within a tree stem. The second objective was to analyze the relations among these properties and to identify the one that offers the best information in addition to basic specific gravity for discrimination of species.
Methods : Wood discs were collected at various heights along a tree stem. We used a method consisting of comparing the CT images of the discs in the green state and after oven drying. Finally, 10 variables were computed for 115 trees of five temperate species: green, oven-dry, and basic specific gravities; moisture content; relative water content; relative water content of lumens; and fractions of air, water, free water, and cell walls.
Results : Maps of wood properties summarizing the radial and vertical variations were obtained, allowing us to highlight species-specific patterns. The five species were discriminated best when plotted in the plane defined by basic specific gravity and relative water content of lumens.
Conclusion : The proposed method is original and simple enough to process large samples. Because it correlated less with basic specific gravity than with moisture content, relative water content of lumens was selected for species characterization. This is the first study of such wood properties at this fine scale within a tree stem, simultaneously and for a substantial number of trees of five species including both hardwoods and softwoods.

[Termes IGN] San DiegoRésumé : (Auteur) Two GEOBIA approaches are compared for their effectiveness in mapping dead trees within island montane forests of Southern California: a spatial contextual approach using an artificial neural network classifier, and a segmentation and multi-pixel classification approach. Both approaches are tested with multitemporal aerial orthoimagery having varying spatial resolutions. Spectral transformation inputs are also tested. An object-based accuracy assessment is conducted. Accuracies range between 30 percent to 90 percent for the dead tree class and are significantly higher for the spatial-contextual approach. Inclusion of spectral transforms increased accuracies by 5 percent for the true object-based approach, up to 13 percent for the spatial contextual approach, and reduced commission error up to 10 percent for both approaches. Masking techniques increased accuracies of the spatial contextual approach by 20 percent. With manual editing, the most accurate maps of individual live and dead trees from the spatial contextual approach are suitable for studying spatio-temporal trends in montane conifer mortality. [Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (auteur) Key message: A dynamic growth model was developed for maritime pine in Asturias. During the evaluation process, a stand volume ratio function proved the best of two alternative methods for estimating merchantable volume. Comparison of the developed model with existing models for nearby regions showed that a single model may suffice for the whole of the NW Iberian Peninsula.
Context: Maritime pine is one of the most important tree species in NW Spain. There was no existing dynamic growth model for this species in Asturias.
Aims: To develop a dynamic growth model for maritime pine in Asturias, by evaluating two different methods of estimating volume (a disaggregation system and a stand volume ratio function), and to compare the developed model with existing models for Galicia and northern Portugal are the goals of this study.
Methods: The dynamic model is based on the state-space approach, in which three state variables characterize the stand at any point in time: dominant height, number of stems per hectare and stand basal area. The transition function for the first variable was developed on the basis of stem analysis data in a previous study, while the corresponding functions for the last two variables were simultaneously fitted with data obtained from successive measurements of permanent plots. An appendix outlining the implementation of a stand growth simulator in the R environment is included to facilitate model use and evaluation.
Results: When the whole model was used to project the stand conditions, the stand volume ratio function performed best, yielding a root mean square error of 22.4 m3 ha−1 and a critical error of 18.4 %. Comparison with models developed for other regions revealed both similarities and differences, some of which may be attributed to an unequal distribution of the available data in age and site quality classes.
Conclusion: The proposed dynamic growth model provided accurate results, and comparison with other region-specific models showed that a single dynamic model may suffice for the whole of the NW Iberian Peninsula.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: In the open-field warming experiment using infrared heaters, 3 °C warming affected soil respiration more in the deciduous Quercus variabilis Blume plot than in the evergreen Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. plot, but did not affect the plant biomass in either species.
Context: Understanding the species-specific responses of belowground carbon processes to warming is essential for the accurate prediction of forest carbon cycles in ecosystems affected by future climate change.
Aims: This study aimed to investigate the effect of experimental warming on soil CO2 efflux, soil-air CO2 concentration, and plant biomass for two taxonomically different temperate tree species.
Methods: Experimental warming was conducted in an open-field planted with Q. variabilis and P. densiflora seedlings. Infrared heaters increased the air temperature by 3 °C in the warmed plots compared with the air temperature in the control plots over a 2-year period.
Results: The increase in air and soil temperature stimulated soil CO2 efflux by 29 and 22 % for the Q. variabilis and P. densiflora plots, respectively. Seasonal variation in the warming effect on soil CO2 efflux was species-specific. Soil CO2 efflux was also positively related to both soil temperature and soil water content. The soil moisture deficit decreased the difference in soil CO2 efflux between the control and warmed plots. Warming did not affect soil CO2 concentration and plant biomass in either species; however, the mean soil CO2 concentration was positively correlated with root and total biomass.
Conclusion: Warming increased soil CO2 efflux in both Q. variabilis and P. densiflora plots, while the increase showed remarkable seasonal variations and different magnitudes for the two species.
