[Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) - Context Modification of stand density by thinning may buffer the response of tree growth and vigor to changes in climate by enhancing soil water availability. $- Aims We tested the impact of thinning intensity on cambial growth of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis L.) under semi-arid, Mediterranean conditions. $- Methods A multiple thinning experiment was established on an Aleppo pine plantation in Spain. We analysed the stem growth dynamics of two different crown classes under four different thinning intensities (15 %, 30 %, and 45 % removal of the basal area) for 2 years, based on biweekly band dendrometer recordings. Local relative extractable soil water was derived from the use of a water balance model Biljou© (available at https://appgeodb.nancy.inra.fr/biljou/) and used as an explanatory variable. $- Results Radial growth was mainly controlled by soil water availability during the growing season, and differed by crown class. The growth rates of dominant trees were significantly higher than the growth rates of suppressed trees. Removal of 30 % and 45 % of the initial basal area produced a growth release in both dominant and suppressed trees that did not occur under less intense thinning treatments. $- Conclusions Soil water availability was the main driver of radial growth during the growing season. Forest management confirmed its value for ameliorating the effects of water lim-itations on individual tree growth. These results may help managers understand how altering stand density will differen-tially affect diameter growth responses of Aleppo pine to short-term climatic fluctuations, promoting forests that are resilient to future climatic conditions. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports on a study of measuring stem curves of standing trees of different species and in different growth stages using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Pine and spruce trees are scanned using the multiscan approach in the field, and trees are felled to measure them destructively for the purpose of obtaining reference values. The stem curves are automatically retrieved from laser point clouds, resulting in an accuracy of ~1 cm. The corresponding manual measurements yield similar accuracy but fewer measurements at the upper parts of tree stems, compared with the automated measurements. The stem volumes based on stem curve data and field measurements and the best Finnish national allometric volume equations (using tree species, height, and diameters at heights of 1.3 and 6 m as predictors) result in similar accuracy. The measurement accuracy of the stem curves and stem volumes is similar for both pine and spruce trees. The results of this paper confirm the feasibility of using TLS to produce stem curve data in an automated, accurate and noninvasive way and indicate that the point cloud provides adequate information to accurately derive stem volumes from standing trees. The stem curves and volumes retrieved from point clouds can be employed in various forest management activities, such as the calibration of national or regional allometric curve functions and the prediction of profits in preharvest inventories. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Research presented here explores the feasibility of leveraging vegetation data derived from airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for visibility modeling. Using LiDAR and TLS datasets of a lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) dominant ecosystem, tree canopy and trunk obstructions were isolated relevant to a discrete visibility beam in a short-range line-of-sight model. Cumulative obstruction factors from vegetation were compared with reference visibility values from digital photographs along sightline paths. LiDAR-derived tree factors were augmented with single-scan TLS data for obstruction prediction. Good correlation between datasets was found up to 10 m from the terrestrial scanner, but fine scale visibility modeling was problematic at longer distances. Analysis of correlation and regression results reveal the influence of obstruction shadowing inherent to discrete LiDAR and TLS, potentially limiting the feasibility of modeling visibility over large areas with similar technology. However, the results support the potential for TLS-derived subcanopy metrics for augmenting large amounts of aerial LiDAR data to significantly improve models of forest structure. Subtle LiDAR processing improvements, including more accurate tree delineation through higher point density aerial data, combined with better vegetation quantification processes for TLS data, will advance the feasibility and accuracy of data integration.
