[Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (Auteur) Small Footprint LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has been proposed as an effective tool for measuring detailed biophysical characteristics of forests over broad spatial scales. However, by itself LiDAR yields only a sample of the true 3D structure of a forest. In order to extract useful forestry relevant information, this data must be interpreted using mathematical models and computer algorithms that infer or estimate specific forest metrics. For these outputs to be useful, algorithms must be validated and/or calibrated using a sub-sample of ‘known’ metrics measured using more detailed, reliable methods such as field sampling. In this paper, we describe a novel method for delineating and deriving metrics of individual trees from LiDAR data based on watershed segmentation. Because of the costs involved with collecting both LiDAR data and field samples for validation, we use synthetic LiDAR data to validate and assess the accuracy of our algorithm. This synthetic LiDAR data is generated using a simple geometric model of Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) trees and a simulation of LiDAR sampling. Our results suggest that point densities greater than 2 and preferably greater than 4 points per m2 are necessary to obtain accurate forest inventory data from Loblolly pine stands. However the results also demonstrate that the detection errors (i.e. the accuracy and biases of the algorithm) are intrinsically related to the structural characteristics of the forest being measured. We argue that experiments with synthetic data are directly useful to forest managers to guide the design of operational forest inventory studies. In addition, we argue that the development of LiDAR simulation models and experiments with the data they generate represents a fundamental and useful approach to designing, improving and exploring the accuracy and efficiency of LiDAR algorithms. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) High resolution GIS data describing forests is an important knowledge, both for mapping and for environmental monitoring purposes. The extraction of such information out of imagery consists in a detection of woody areas followed by a thematic enrichment in forested areas, including a discrimination between evergreen, deciduous and mixt plantings. This paper attempts to automatize these photo-interpretation tasks. It particularly emphasizes on the determination of the most suitable input data to cope with these two classification problems. Two kinds of optical images have indeed been used: RapidEye data and 50cm ground resolution aerial ortho-images. Aerial data provided very high resolution information and texture indices, whereas RapidEye data brought additional radiometric information, and especially a red-edge channel. It has then been shown that texture information from aerial 50cm images was a key information for the woody area detection and that the red-edge band of RapidEye data appeared to be useful to discriminate between evergreen and deciduous plantings. [Termes IGN] PinophytaRésumé : (Auteur) We compared the ability of several classification and regression algorithms to predict forest stand structure metrics and standard surface fuel models. Our study area spans a dense, topographically complex Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forest. We used clustering, regression trees, and support vector machine algorithms to analyze high density (average 9 pulses/m2), discrete return, small-footprint lidar data, along with multispectral imagery. Stand structure metric predictions generally decreased with increased canopy penetration. For example, from the top of canopy, we predicted canopy height (r2 ! 0.87), canopy cover (r2 ! 0.83), basal area (r2 ! 0.82), shrub cover (r2 ! 0.62), shrub height (r2 ! 0.59), combined fuel loads (r2 ! 0.48), and fuel bed depth (r2 ! 0.35). While the general fuel types were predicted accurately, specific surface fuel model predictions were poor (76 percent and "50 percent correct classification, respectively) using all algorithms. These fuel components are critical inputs for wildfire behavior modeling, which ultimately support forest management decisions. This comprehensive examination of the relative utility of lidar and optical imagery will be useful for forest science and management.
