[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The increasing research interest in global climate change and the rise of the public awareness have generated a significant demand for new tools to support effective visualization of big climate data in a cyber environment such that anyone from any location with an Internet connection and a web browser can easily view and comprehend the data. In response to the demand, this paper introduces a new web-based platform for visualizing multidimensional, time-varying climate data on a virtual globe. The web-based platform is built upon a virtual globe system Cesium, which is open-source, highly extendable and capable of being easily integrated into a web environment. The emerging WebGL technique is adapted to support interactive rendering of 3D graphics with hardware graphics acceleration. To address the challenges of transmitting and visualizing voluminous, complex climate data over the Internet to support real-time visualization, we develop a stream encoding and transmission strategy based on video-compression techniques. This strategy allows dynamic provision of scientific data in different precisions to balance the needs for scientific analysis and visualization cost. Approaches to represent, encode and decode processed data are also introduced in detail to show the operational workflow. Finally, we conduct several experiments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed strategy under different network conditions. A prototype, PolarGlobe, has been developed to visualize climate data in the Arctic regions from multiple angles. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Thanks to the growth of geoportal products and online cartographic platforms, access to spatial data has never been so easy for so many people. But access to cartographic knowledge for laypersons using such data is lagging behind. Platforms that allow users to create map mashups from diverse data sources can lead to unsatisfactory cartographic visualization, which reduces the map's legibility and the usefulness of such functions. This article's focus is on creating a framework that supports smart cartographic functions to improve the quality of map mashups. First, we assess the state of cartographic conflicts due to map mashup, using examples from existing geoportals. Afterwards, we describe a framework that allows us to define cartographic functions, focusing on symbology changes and based on a client-side approach. We do not aim to fully model the complex decision-making process of a professional cartographer, but rather to provide a set of smart functions that use appropriate assumptions and constraints based on cartographic principles and semantic information. As proof of concept, the framework and functions are then integrated within a geoportal. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article deals with the results of a user study, which aimed to compare two geovisualization interfaces (one interactive and one animated and interactive) displaying the chain of events during past major floods. Some limitations were identified concerning the variables measured (accuracy and speed of answer) and the tasks to be performed by users. Results have shown that the two common metrics used in map evaluations seem not to be sufficient to reveal differences between map types. Other metrics extracted from the participants’ interaction logs have been used successfully. Finally, to decrease the variability between the results of experiments and to make them more comparable with previous tests, one solution might be to develop and share reference data sets and sets of tasks in several themes, with known cognitive complexities, as is already done in other research fields. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Graphic interfaces of geoportals allow visualizing and overlaying various (visually) heterogeneous geographical data, often by image blending: vector data, maps, aerial imagery, Digital Terrain Model, etc. Map design and geo-visualization may benefit from methods and tools to hybrid, i.e. visually integrate, heterogeneous geographical data and cartographic representations. In this paper, we aim at designing continuous hybrid visualizations between ortho-imagery and symbolized vector data, in order to control a particular visual property, i.e. the photo-realism perception. The natural appearance (colors, textures) and various texture effects are used to drive the control the photo-realism level of the visualization: color and texture interpolation blocks have been developed. We present a global design method that allows to manipulate the behavior of those interpolation blocks on each type of geographical layer, in various ways, in order to provide various cartographic continua. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Findings of empirical studies of spatial memory using maps are direct responses to the successful transfer and processing of map information. The memory performance of map users is an important indication of the quality of a map design. Studies of spatial memory have mainly relied on recall performances, but maps can be used in various ways depending on the map user's task and applied strategy. Therefore, one memory paradigm does not cover the entire spectrum of options for examining the retrieval of map information. Three different experiments were designed to analyze and compare memory performances using different map information in recall and recognition (combining episodic and semantic memory) paradigms. The results demonstrate that map complexity, as varied by the amount of displayed map detail, contributes significantly to memory performance. Moreover, memory enhancement affected by map-structuring elements (grids) depends on the respective paradigm and also on the visual appearance of the structuring elements. Both paradigms for examining the influence of map information on cognitive processing can be applied specifically to analyze the efficiency of map designs. On the basis of the different effects of map information, a reasoned application of these paradigms to test map designs is indispensable.
