[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Deadwood is a fundamental structural and functional component of forests, with a crucial role in supporting the forest biodiversity and nutrient and carbon cycling. Precise deadwood density estimates are necessary to evaluate the biomass and carbon stocked in this component. For a better understanding of the deadwood dynamics in natural forests, given its higher abundance, it is important to achieve deeper knowledge about its decay rate and how it is influenced by environmental factors. In this study, we estimated dry deadwood density for two different tree species, silver fir (Abies alba) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and for three snags and five logs decomposition classes (class 1 representing snag/log deadwood at early stages of decomposition and class 3/5 representing snags or logs, respectively, at its most advanced state of decomposition) in a virgin mixed beech-fir forest in the Southern Carpathians. The goal of this study was to assess how deadwood density is influenced by different abiotic (moisture, elevation, slope, aspect) and wood-related factors (rottenness, position of the sampling along the deadwood piece, the contact with the soil).For snags, the mean dry density showed a reduced variability within decomposition classes (484-326 kg.m-3 for beech and 374-319 kg.m-3 for fir), compared to the logs (486-139 kg.m-3 for beech and 359-161 kg.m-3 for fir). While the mass moisture varied slowly in the first three decay classes (around 60-80%), it increased sharply in the last two decay classes of logs (> 140% in the fourth classes and > 350% in the last one). The rottenness increased with the decay degree in a similar way for both species. The contact of logs with the soil influenced positively the moisture of the log, but the position of the sampling along the piece did not play any significant role in the variability of density. The density estimates per decay classes were used to compare the amount of carbon (C) sequestered as deadwood for each species. The mean biomass of C as deadwood at Sinca virgin forest varied greatly among the 21 plots from 0.36 to 41.16 MgC ha-1, with a mean value of 15.96 ± 2.36 (±SE) MgC ha-1.Our study suggests that volume-based calculations might yield biased quantitative estimates of C stored as deadwood unless a local estimate of dead wood density corrected per species and decomposition class is applied. Moreover, using an averaged value of dry density instead of dry density value for each decay class may result in an overestimation of 22% on the estimation of C stock sequestered as deadwood. Thus, our study may also help planning future inventories of C stocks in other virgin forests and for other species, (e.g., make emphasis in estimating densities in all decay classes). Furthermore, it could serve as a methodological basis for more specific research designed to uncover the potential influence of different forest management practices on dry deadwood density. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) So far, large-scale projects aiming to map forest attributes using aerial LiDAR data have been developed using ground sample plots acquired synchronously with LiDAR. No large projects have been developed using aerial LiDAR acquired independent of ground sample plot datasets. The goal of this study was to develop and validate large-scale parametric merchantable wood volume estimation models using existing historical ground sample plots. The models can be applied to large LiDAR datasets to map merchantable wood volume as a 10 × 10 m raster. The study demonstrated that a relative density index (RDI) based on a self-thinning equation and dominant height were suitable variables that can be calculated both for ground sample plots and LiDAR datasets. The resulting volume raster showed sound accuracy rates when compared to validation zones: R², 82.25%; RMSE, 13.7 m3/ha; and bias, −4.09 m3/ha. The results show that ground sample plot datasets acquired synchronously with LiDAR can be used to calculate the RDI and dominant height. These variables can consequently be used to map forest attributes over a large area with a high level of accuracy, thus not requiring the implementation of new costly sample plots. This has created a need to develop novel methodologies to obtain wood density information over multiple tree communities, landscapes, and ecoregions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the dependencies between structural characteristics of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) tree communities and internal wood property (i.e., mean wood density and ring width) variations at breast height. Terrestrial laser scanning was used to derive the structural characteristics of even-aged Scots pine dominated forests with varying silvicultural treatments. Pearson’s correlations and linear mixed effect models were used to evaluate the interactions. The results show that varying silvicultural treatments did not have a statistically significant effect on the mean wood density. A notably stronger effect was observed between the structural characteristics and the mean ring width within varying treatments. It can be concluded that single time terrestrial laser scanning is capable of capturing the variability of structural characteristics and their interactions with mean ring width within different silvicultural treatments but not the variation of mean wood density. These results contradict the fact that the volume of wood is directly converted to biomass using the historical values of the conversion rates. From 1950 to 2020 the biomass of 1 m3 of the stem with bark decreased on average by 80 kg (–17%) for Scots pine, by 105 kg (–22%) for Norway spruce and by 92 kg (–15%) for silver birch. The results obtained should be taken into account when assessing the technical properties of wood and estimating carbon sequestration by forest biomass. Since decreasing trends in stem biomass have been identified for several tree species, the phenomenon may have a large degree of generality. Such studies should be continued both at the regional and national level and at the global level. Understanding morphological and anatomical responses of coppiced trees could help to determine the quantity and quality of wood and thus provide better management of coppiced tree plantations for short-time biomass production. However, there is a little investigation in morphological and anatomical adaptation in different fast-growing tree species. The present study, therefore, studied how morphology and anatomy vary between two fast-growing coppices of Populus nigra L. (black poplar) and Salix alba L. (white willow). Each coppiced tree was grown in a similar habitat and was at a similar age. However, each coppiced tree showed different morphological and anatomical plasticity in their stems in response to environmental factors. Poplar coppices showed better anatomical properties due to greater vessel diameter, fibre length, fibre width, fibre wall thickness, and ray height; however willow coppices had better morphological plasticity which had higher average stem height and ring width. The results suggest that willow coppices had the greater height growth potential even at 2 years of age than poplar coppices.
