[Termes IGN] réserve naturelleRésumé : (auteur) Mangrove National Nature Reserves (MNNRs) play an extraordinarily significant role in conserving mangrove forests and their habitats. In China, one-fourth of the total mangrove forests were located in MNNRs. Understanding annual spatial distributions and conversions of these mangrove forests are important for precision conservation and rehabilitation efforts. However, to date, annual land cover maps of China’s MNNRs are still unavailable. Here, we proposed a rapid and robust approach to produce annual maps of each MNNRs for the time period of 2016–2020 based on 10-m resolution Sentinel-2 imagery. The proposed approach was developed using object-based image analysis, Otsu and Random Forest algorithm. Results showed that 1) during 2016–2020, areal extents of mangrove forest in all the MNNRs continuously increased from 5912 ha to 6128 ha; 2) obvious increase were found in Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve where mangrove forest increased by 127 ha, accounted for 59% of national total increases; 3) newly grown mangrove forests were mainly converted from tidal flats and aquaculture ponds. Our annual maps of China’s MNNRs could provide a basis for managing mangrove ecosystems and supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals related to coastal development. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) In this study, we present the first findings of the potential utility of miniaturized light and detection ranging (LiDAR) scanners mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for improving urban flood modelling and assessments at the local scale. This is done by generating ultra-high spatial resolution digital terrain models (DTMs) featuring buildings and urban microtopographic structures that may affect floodwater pathways (DTMbs). The accuracy and level of detail of the flooded areas, simulated by a hydrologic screening model (Arc-Malstrøm), were vastly improved when DTMbs of 0.3 m resolution representing three urban sites surveyed by a UAV-LiDAR in Accra, Ghana, were used to supplement a 10 m resolution DTM covering the region’s entire catchment area. The generation of DTMbs necessitated the effective classification of UAV-LiDAR point clouds using a morphological and a triangulated irregular network method for hilly and flat landscapes, respectively. The UAV-LiDAR data enabled the identification of archways, boundary walls and bridges that were critical when predicting precise run-off courses that could not be projected using the coarser DTM only. Variations in a stream’s geometry due to a one-year time gap between the satellite-based and UAV-LiDAR data sets were also observed. The application of the coarser DTM produced an overestimate of water flows equal to 15% for sloping terrain and up to 62.5% for flat areas when compared to the respective run-offs simulated from the DTMbs. The application of UAV-LiDAR may enhance the effectiveness of urban planning by projecting precisely the locations, extents and run-offs of flooded areas in dynamic urban settings. [Termes IGN] observatoire astronomiqueRésumé : (auteur) We present the procedure we followed to design an artificial corner reflector (CR) at the Calern site of Côte d’Azur Observatory (France). Although still few in number, such reflectors are an integral part of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) infrastructure. They can be used as a stable radar target in SAR images to connect local InSAR deformation maps to the global Terrestrial Reference Frame and for SAR absolute determination. During a test phase, the orientation of the CR was changed in order to be aligned toward all possible orbits of Sentinel-1A/1B satellites. On the different SAR images, the CR exhibits a high backscattering signal, and provides a Signal-to-Clutter Ratio larger than 26 dB. Since December 2018, the CR is specifically oriented toward the relative orbit 88. It is clearly detected as a PS in our InSAR analyses and as expected, the standard deviation of displacement measured on the CR is lower than on surrounding PS. A first local survey was performed to locate precisely this CR with respect to the existing geodetic instruments and annual campaigns have been carried out since then to insure its stability over time. Tree height is widely used to assess a site’s productivity both in forest ecology research and forest management. Thus, a precise height measure represents a necessary step for the estimation of carbon storage at the local, national, and global scales. In this context, error in height measurement necessarily affects the accuracy of related estimates. Ordinarily, forest height is surveyed by ground sampling adopting hypsometers. The latter suffers from many errors mainly related to the correct tree apex identification (not always well visible in dense stands) and to the measurement process itself. In this work, a statistically based operative method for estimating height measurement uncertainty (σH) was proposed using the variance propagation law. Some simulations were performed involving several combinations of terrain slope, tree height, and survey distances by modelling the σH behaviour and its sensitivity to such parameters. Results proved that σH could vary between 0.5 m and up to 20 m (worst case). Sensitivity analysis shows that terrain slopes and distance poorly affect σH, while angles are the main drivers of height uncertainty. Finally, to give a practical example of such deductions, tree height uncertainty was mapped at the global scale using Google Earth Engine and summarized per forest biomes. Results proved that tropical biomes have higher uncertainty (from 1 m to 4 m) while shrublands and tundra have the lowest (under 1 m). The resulting surface geometry is validated via terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) acquired reference data. Typical discrepancies remained within 2 and 5 cm in horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Discrepancies between TLS, SLAM-enabled handheld scanner and conventional surveying results are small and fully satisfy the contemporary accuracy requirements, yet evidence that the conventional mine survey results are affected by the subjectivity of the surveyors. The SLAM-enabled laser scanning hence appears to be the most suitable method for underground mining surveys.
