[Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) The French National Forest Inventory provides detailed forest information up to large national and regional scales. Forest inventory for small areas of interest within a large population is equally important for decision making, such as for local forest planning and management purposes. However, sampling these small areas with sufficient ground plots is often not cost efficient. In response, small area estimation has gained increasing popularity in forest inventory. It consists of a set of techniques that enables predictions of forest attributes of subpopulation with the help of auxiliary information that compensates for the small field samples. Common sources of auxiliary information usually come from remote sensing technology, such as airborne laser scanning and satellite imagery. The newly launched NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), a full waveform Lidar instrument, provides an unprecedented opportunity of collecting large-scale and dense forest sample plots given its sampling frequency and spatial coverage. However, the geolocation uncertainty associated with GEDI footprints create important challenges for their use for small area estimations. In this study, we designed a process that provides NFI measurements at plot level with GEDI auxiliary information from nearby footprints. We demonstrated that GEDI RH98 is equivalent to NFI dominant height at plot level. We stressed the importance of pairing NFI plots with nearby GEDI footprints, based on not only the distance in between but also their similarities, i.e., forest heights and forest types. Subsequently, these NFI-GEDI pairs were used for small area estimations following a two-phase sampling scheme. We showcased that, with an adequate sample size, small area estimation with GEDI auxiliary data can improve the accuracy of forest volume estimates. [Termes IGN] Zurich (Suisse)Résumé : (auteur) National forest inventories (NFI) are important for the assessment of the state and development of forests. Traditional NFIs often rely on statistical sampling approaches as well as expert assessment which may suffer from observer bias and may lack robustness for time series analysis. Over the course of the last decade, close-range remote sensing techniques such as terrestrial and mobile laser scanning became ever more established for the assessment of three-dimensional (3D) forest structure. With the ongoing trend to make the systems smaller, easier to use and more efficient, the pathway is being opened for an operational inclusion of such devices within the framework of an NFI to support the traditional field assessment. Close-range remote sensing could potentially speed up field inventory work as well as increase the area in which certain parameters are assessed. Benchmarks are needed to evaluate the performance of different close-range remote sensing devices and approaches, both in terms of efficiency as well as accuracy. In this study we evaluate the performance of two terrestrial (TLS), one handheld mobile (PLS) and two drone based (UAVLS) laser scanning systems to detect trees and extract the diameter at breast height (DBH) in three plots with a steep gradient in tree and understorey vegetation density. As a novelty, we also tested the acquisition of 3D point-clouds using a low-cost action camera (GoPro) in conjunction with the Structure from Motion (SfM) technique and compared its performance with those of the more costly LiDAR devices. Among the many parameters evaluated in traditional NFIs, the focus of the performance evaluation of this study is set on the automatic tree detection and DBH extraction. The results showed that TLS delivers the highest tree detection rate (TDR) of up to 94.6% under leaf-off and up to 82% under leaf-on conditions and a relative RMSE (rRMSE) for the DBH extraction between 2.5 and 9%, depending on the undergrowth complexity. The tested PLS system (leaf-on) achieved a TDR of up to 80% with an rRMSE between 3.7 and 5.8%. The tested UAVLS systems showed lowest TDR of less than 77% under leaf-off and less than 37% under leaf-on conditions. The novel GoPro approach achieved a TDR of up to 53% under leaf-on conditions. The reduced TDR can be explained by the reduced area coverage due to the chosen circular acquisition path taken with the GoPro approach. The DBH extraction performance on the other hand is comparable to those of the LiDAR devices with an rRMSE between 2 and 9%. Further benchmarks are needed in order to fully assess the applicability of these systems in the framework of an NFI. Especially the robustness under varying forest conditions (seasonality) and over a broader range of forest types and canopy structure has to be evaluated. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) So far, large-scale projects aiming to map forest attributes using aerial LiDAR data have been developed using ground sample plots acquired synchronously with LiDAR. No large projects have been developed using aerial LiDAR acquired independent of ground sample plot datasets. The goal of this study was to develop and validate large-scale parametric merchantable wood volume estimation models using existing historical ground sample plots. The models can be applied to large LiDAR datasets to map merchantable wood volume as a 10 × 10 m raster. The study demonstrated that a relative density index (RDI) based on a self-thinning equation and dominant height were suitable variables that can be calculated both for ground sample plots and LiDAR datasets. The resulting volume raster showed sound accuracy rates when compared to validation zones: R², 82.25%; RMSE, 13.7 m3/ha; and bias, −4.09 m3/ha. The results show that ground sample plot datasets acquired synchronously with LiDAR can be used to calculate the RDI and dominant height. These variables can consequently be used to map forest attributes over a large area with a high level of accuracy, thus not requiring the implementation of new costly sample plots. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Today, high-quality reference tree measurements, including the position, diameter, height and volume, are cumbersome and slow to carry out, but highly needed for forest inventories based on airborne laser scanning. Mobile laser scanning technologies hold the promise for collecting reference data for forest inventories with an extremely high efficiency. Perhaps, the most efficient approach for reference data collection would be to mount a high-resolution laser scanning system on board an airborne vehicle flying at a low altitude above the forest canopy since this would allow recording reference samples of individual trees with the speed of flight. To demonstrate the potential of this technology, we mounted an in-house developed HeliALS-DW laser scanning system on board a helicopter and collected point cloud data in a boreal forest on three test sites containing a total of 1469 trees. The obtained point clouds incorporated sufficiently many high-quality stem hits for estimating the stem curves and stem volumes of individual trees since the point clouds had a relatively high point density of 2200–3800 echoes/m2, and the scanner had been tilted by 15° from the nadir to increase the possibility of recording stem hits. To automatically estimate the diameters at breast height (DBH) and stem curves of individual trees, we used algorithms designed to tolerate moderate drifts in the trajectory of the laser scanner. Furthermore, the stem volumes of individual trees were computed by using the estimated stem curves and tree heights without any allometric models. Using the proposed methods, we were able to estimate the stem curves with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.7–2.6 cm (6–9%) while detecting 42–71% of the trees. The RMSE of stem volume estimates was 0.1–0.15 m3 (12–21%). We also showed that the tree detection rate could be improved up to 87–96% for trees with a DBH exceeding 20 cm if slightly larger average errors for the stem attributes were allowed. Our results pave the way for using high-resolution airborne laser scanning for field reference data collection by conducting direct measurements of tree stems with a high efficiency. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Biomass and carbon content are essential indicators for monitoring forest ecosystems and their role in climate action, but their estimation is not straightforward. A typical approach to solve these limitations has been the estimation of tree or stand biomass based on forest inventory data, using either allometric equations or biomass expansion factors. Many allometric equations exist, but very few studies have assessed how the calculation methods used may impact outcomes and how this impact depends on genera, functional group, climate or forest structural attributes. In this study we evaluate the differences in biomass estimates yielded by the most widely used biomass equations in Spain. We first quantify the discrepancies at tree level and among the main forest tree species. We observed that the divergences in carbon estimations between different equations increased with tree size, especially in the case of hardwoods and for diameters beyond the range used to calibrate the equations. At the plot level, we found considerable differences between the biomass values predicted using different methods (above 25% in one out of three plots), which constitutes a warning against the uncritical choice of equations to determine biomass or carbon values. The spatial representation of the differences revealed geographical patterns related to the dominance of fast-growing species such as Eucalyptus or Pinus pinaster, with a minor effect of forest structure, and almost no effect of climate. Finally, we observed that differences were mostly due to the data source rather than the modelling approach or equation used. Based on our results, BEF equations seem a valid and unbiased option to provide nation-level estimations of carbon balance, although local equations should preferably be used if they are available for the target area.
