[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The Chinese National Forest Inventory (NFI) has reported increased forest coverage in China since 2000, however, the new satellite-based dataset Global Forest Change (GFC) finds decreased forest coverage. In this study, four satellite datasets are used to investigate this discrepancy in forest cover change estimates in China between 2000 and 2013: forest cover change estimated from MODIS Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), existing MODIS Land Cover (LC) and Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) products, and the Landsat-based GFC. Among these satellite datasets, forest loss shows much better agreement in terms of total change area and spatial pattern than do forest gain. The net changes in forest cover as a proportion of China’s land area varied widely from increases of 1.56% in NBR, 1.93% in VCF, and 3.40% in LC to a decline of −0.40% in GFC. The magnitude of net forest increase derived from MODIS datasets (1.56–3.40%) is lower than that reported in NFI (3.41%). Algorithm parameters, different spatial resolutions, and inconsistent forest definitions could be important sources of the discrepancies. Although several MODIS datasets support an overall forest increase in China, the direction and magnitude of net forest change is still unknown due to the large uncertainties in satellite-derived estimates. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Forest stands are a basic unit of analysis for forest inventory and mapping. Stands are defined as large forested areas of homogeneous tree species composition and age. Their accurate delineation is usually performed by human operators through visual analysis of very high resolution (VHR) infra-red and visible images. This task is tedious, highly time consuming, and needs to be automated for scalability and efficient updating purposes. The most appropriate fusion of two remote sensing modalities (lidar and multispectral images) is investigated here. The multispectral images give information about the tree species while 3D lidar point clouds provide geometric information. The fusion is operated at three different levels within a semantic segmentation workflow: over-segmentation, classification, and regularization. Results show that over-segmentation can be performed either on lidar or optical images without performance loss or gain, whereas fusion is mandatory for efficient semantic segmentation. Eventually, the fusion strategy dictates the composition and nature of the forest stands, assessing the high versatility of our approach. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) 3D remote sensing data from either Lidar or Photogrammetric means are recognized as valuable sources of information for assessing and estimating forest structure and related parameters. Both data types have been used with field inventory data for both mapping forest parameters and supporting multisource inventories. However, such a combination requires the data to be accurately matched in the spatial domain. While 3D remote sensing data might provide metric accuracy, the spatial accuracy of field plots remain largely constrained by the limited precision of GPS measurements under forest canopies. Different approaches have been proposed to improve this data registration issue, mainly through matching algorithms aiming to spatially adjust height information from field inventory with remote sensing-based models of canopy heights (CHM). State of the art approaches rely on either point to surface or point to point matching algorithms. However, the former did not make any hypothesis on the tree position on the CHM and could lead to inappropriate match. And the later relies on strong assumptions on the spatial distribution of trees and are thus sensitive to the quality of the tree apices detected on the CHM. We propose an algorithm taking advantage of both approaches. The algorithm is based on a point to surface matching algorithm constraints by local maxima (LM) extracted from the CHM. A search algorithm moved the field tree map in a given neighborhood, ensuring that the highest field tree is located over a LM. The best position is defined using both the correlation and the height error. The algorithm was tested on 91 plots including different forest types and a range of forest structure. Initial positions were shifted in average by 2.18 m (±1.95 m SD) and led to an average error of 1.61 m (±1.07 m). The higher the tree number, the better the registration.
