[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Data collection for forest planning in private forestry in Finland is based on periodic, labour-intensive, stand level field inventories. Therefore, to increase guidance for forest owners more cost-efficient methods that replace or supplement field inventories are needed so as to reallocate labour resources. In addition, for active forest owners, up-to-date information is of interest. The aim of this thesis was to test the applicability of different inventory and updating methods that are based on aerial photography for the regional forest inventory of private forests in Finland. Four approaches were chosen: I) stand level visual interpretation of changes and simulation of stand development, 2) automatic, stand level interpretation of aerial photographs utilising nonparametric estimation, 3) automatic, photogrammetric estimation of mean height, and 4) automatic, monoscopic identification of individual trees. Approaches I and 2 are inventory or updating methods, while approaches 3 and 4 can be considered as components of such methods. Approach 1 was found to be appropriate for operative use for estates that have not ordered a forest plan, provided that the strict prerequisites for the inventory area are met. The- accuracy of approach 2, as such, was not considered to be high enough for forest planning, but this very inexpensive method could turn out to be applicable, if its accuracy could be improved. Approach 3 was based on image matching and would be most useful as a part of other methods, like template matching in multiple images. Although only identification of trees was tested in approach 4, the applicability of whole single tree based inventory method was appraised. Relatively high costs and low accuracy limit the possibilities to use this method, in practice. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The French National Forest Inventory was created in 1958 to assess metropolitan forest resources. To stick to new national and international requirements as well as to enhance reactivity, a new inventory method was implemented in 2004. This new method is based on a systematic sampling grid covering the whole territory every year. The size of the mesh is variable, locally adapted to the diversity and the fragmentation of French forests. The sample is defined for 5 years. It is divided into 5 annual systematic subsamples, each of which covers the whole country. The estimation method uses post stratification to enhance statistical accuracy. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Efficient identification of forest age is useful for forest management and ecological applications. Here, we propose a user-assisted method for determining forest age using high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery. This method requires individual trees to be extracted from imagery and represented as points. We use a local maximum filter to generate points that are converted to Voronoi polygons. Properties of the Voronoi polygons are correlated with forest age and used to aggregate points (trees) into areas (stands) based on three forest age classes. Accuracy of the aggregation ranges from approximately 68% to 78% and identification of the mature class is more consistent and accurate than the younger classes. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Laser scanners of small footprint diameter and high sampling density provide possibility to obtain accurate height information on the forest canopy. When applying tree crown segmentation methods, individual single trees can be recognised and tree height as well as crown area can be detected. Detection of suppressed trees from a height model based on laser scanning is difficult; however, it is possible to predict these trees by using theoretical distribution functions. In this study, two different methods are used to predict small trees. In the first method, the parameter prediction method is utilised with the complete Weibull distribution, the parameters of which are predicted with separate parameter prediction models; thus, small trees are determined from the predicted tree height distribution. In the second method, the twoparameter left-truncated Weibull distribution is fitted to the detected tree height distribution.
The results are presented by using timber volume and stem density as predicted stand characteristics. The results showed that the root mean square error (RMSE) for the timber volume is about 25% when using only information obtained from laser scanning, whereas the RMSE for the number of stems per ha is about 75%. Predictions for both characteristics are also highly biased and the underestimates are 24% and 62%, respectively. The use of the parameter prediction method to describe small trees improved the accuracy considerably; the RMSE figures for estimates of timber volume and number of stems are 16.0% and 49.2%, respectively. The bias for the estimates is also decreased to 6.3% for timber volume and 8.2% for the number of stems. When a left-truncated height distribution is used to predict the heights of the missing small trees, the RMSEs for the estimates of timber volume and number of stems are 22.5% and 72.7%, respectively. In the case of the timber volume, the reliability figures for both the original laser scanning-based estimates and for the estimates that also contain small trees are comparable to those obtained by conventional compartment-wise Finnish field inventories.Numéro de notice : A2004-199 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2004.01.006 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2004.01.006 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26726
