[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) The use of land surface temperature (LST) for monitoring the consumption and water status of crops requires data at fine spatial and temporal resolutions. Unfortunately, the current spaceborne thermal sensors provide data at either high temporal (e.g. MODIS: Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer) or high spatial (e.g. Landsat) resolution separately. Disaggregating low spatial resolution (LR) LST data using ancillary data available at high spatio-temporal resolution could compensate for the lack of high spatial resolution (HR) LST observations. Existing LST downscaling approaches generally rely on the fractional green vegetation cover (fgv) derived from HR reflectances but they do not take into account the soil water availability to explain the spatial variability in LST at HR. In this context, a new method is developed to disaggregate kilometric MODIS LST at 100 m resolution by including the Sentinel-1 (S-1) backscatter, which is indirectly linked to surface soil moisture, in addition to the Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 (L-7 & L-8) reflectances. The approach is tested over two different sites – an 8 km by 8 km irrigated crop area named “R3” and a 12 km by 12 km rainfed area named “Sidi Rahal” in central Morocco (Marrakech) – on the seven dates when S-1, and L-7 or L-8 acquisitions coincide with a one-day precision during the 2015–2016 growing season. The downscaling methods are applied to the 1 km resolution MODIS-Terra LST data, and their performance is assessed by comparing the 100 m disaggregated LST to Landsat LST in three cases: no disaggregation, disaggregation using Landsat fgv only, disaggregation using both Landsat fgv and S-1 backscatter. When including fgv only in the disaggregation procedure, the mean root mean square error in LST decreases from 4.20 to 3.60 °C and the mean correlation coefficient (R) increases from 0.45 to 0.69 compared to the non-disaggregated case within R3. The new methodology including the S-1 backscatter as input to the disaggregation is found to be systematically more accurate on the available dates with a disaggregation mean error decreasing to 3.35 °C and a mean R increasing to 0.75. [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) Sentinel-1 (S-1) is a two-satellite constellation for continuity of operational synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations. Wave mode (WV) is the default mode over open ocean for S-1 to monitor global ocean waves and wind field. Therefore, proper radiometric calibration is essential to accurately infer these geophysical quantities. Based on the global data set acquired by S-1A WV, assessment of normalized radar cross section (NRCS) is carried out through comparison with CMOD5.N predictions over open ocean. The calibration accuracy quantified by NRCS residuals between SAR measurements and CMOD5.N demonstrates distinct features for two incidence angles (23.8° and 36.8°). Particularly, NRCS at 23.8° is overall consistent with CMOD5.N, while NRCS at 36.8° displays great deviation. Two recalibration methods are then implemented by examining the backscattering profile over Amazon rain forest and ocean calibration. Both methods show the necessity for recalibration and obtain comparable correction factors for WV1 and WV2, respectively. The NRCS residuals by applying both methods are significantly reduced toward zero. By comparison, ocean calibration is more efficient and practical to implement. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates the capability of Sentinel-1 VH-polarized synthetic aperture radar signals, involving 738 scenes in the interferometric wide swath (IW) mode, for ocean surface wind speed retrieval using a novel subswath-based C-band cross-polarized ocean model. When compared with in situ measurements, it is observed that wind speed retrieval accuracy varies progressively along swath, with the most accurate wind speed retrievals being derived from subswath 3 [root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.82 m · s -1 ], followed by subswath 2 (RMSE of 1.92 m · s -1 ), while subswath 1 showed the lowest retrieval accuracy (RMSE of 2.37 m · s -1 ). The average RMSE of wind speeds retrieved from all the three subswaths is 2.08 m · s -1 under low-to-high wind speed regimes (wind speeds Numéro de notice : A2019-130 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1109/TGRS.2018.2867438 Date de publication en ligne : 20/09/2018 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2018.2867438 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=92459

[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Malaysia and Indonesia have been affected by deforestation caused in great part by the proliferation of oil palm plantations. To survey this loss of forest, several studies have monitored these southeast Asian nations with satellite remote sensing alert systems. The methods used have shown potential for this approach, but they are limited by imagery with coarse spatial resolution, low revisit times, and cloud cover. The objective of this research is to improve near real-time operational deforestation detection by combining three sensors: Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8. We used Change Vector Analysis to detect changes between non-affected forest and images under analysis. The results were validated using 166 plots of undisturbed forest and confirmed deforestation events throughout Sabah Malaysian State, and from 70 points from drone pictures in Sumatra, Indonesia. Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 yielded sufficient results in terms of accuracy (less than 11% of commission and omission error). Sentinel-1 had lower accuracy (14% of commission error and 28% of omission error), probably resulting from geometric distortions and speckle noise. During the high cloud-cover season optical sensors took about twice the time to detect deforestation compared to Sentinel-1 which was not affected by cloud cover. By combining the three sensors, we detected deforestations about 8 days after forest clearing events. Deforestations were only detectable during approximately the first 100 days, before bare soils were often coved by legume crop. Our results indicate that near real-time deforestation detection can reveal most events, but the number of false detections could be improved using a multiple event detection process.
