[Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) Sea ice concentration (SIC) is an important sea ice parameter for sea ice navigation, environmental research, and weather and ice forecasting. We have developed and tested a method for estimation of the Baltic Sea SIC using SENTINEL-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 passive microwave radiometer (MWR) data. Here, we present the method and results for January 2016. Ice concentration grids of Finnish Meteorological Institute daily ice charts have been used as reference data in this paper. We present a comparison of four SIC estimation methods with our reference data. In addition to the combined SAR/MWR SIC estimation method, we also compare SIC estimates produced using SAR alone and two MWR-based methods. The main target of this paper was to develop and test a high-resolution SIC estimation method suitable for operational use. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a methodology to generate maps of atmosphere's precipitable water vapor (PWV) over large areas with a length of hundreds of kilometers and a width of about 250 km, based on the use of interferometric Sentinel-1A/B C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with a high spatial resolution of 5 × 20 m2 and the revisiting time of six days. An algorithm to calibrate and merge PWV maps from different swaths of Sentinel-1 acquired along the same track, using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurements, is described. The proposed methodology is tested on Sentinel-1A SAR images acquired over the Iberian Peninsula, along both descending and ascending tracks. The assessment with an independent set of GNSS measurements shows a mean difference of a fraction of millimeter and a dispersion lower than 2 mm. Both the use of Sentinel-1A/B SAR images and the proposed methodology open new perspectives on the application of SAR meteorology for the high-resolution mapping of PWV over large region-spanning areas and the assimilation of interferometric SAR data into numerical weather models. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture content is a key variable for numerous disciplines hence the need for its constant monitoring at a global scale. Satellite imagery is the only mean to fulfil this objective. New generations of satellite sensors such as the Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) system provide measurements at fine spatial and temporal scales. In order to validate such estimates dense in-situ networks measuring soil moisture are required. The scarcity of such networks was the main motivation to establish two validation sites over the Biebrza wetlands within the project funded by the ESA (European Space Agency). The sites are covered by grassland and marshland and are internally homogeneous as far as the soil type and vegetation cover are concerned. Each site is equipped with 9 soil moisture monitoring stations installed every 130 m which allows the derivation of reliable mean soil moisture estimates across the site featuring small standard deviation (0.035 m3/m3 for the grassland site and 0.074 m3/m3 for the marshland site). The main objective of the presented study is to review the soil moisture derivation and validation methodologies suitable for the Sentinel-1 SAR satellite data and to describe physiographical settings of the Biebrza validation sites together with the installed instrumentation. Furthermore, the relationship between the time series of soil moisture measurements and Sentinel-1 sigma nought backscatter coefficient (?0) is examined. Ultimately, the validation results of the low resolution SM-DAS-2 soil moisture product are presented due to the unavailability of the high resolution product. [Termes IGN] système de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) For multitemporal analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired with a terrain observation by progressive scan (TOPS) mode, all acquisitions from a given satellite track must be coregistered to a reference coordinate system with accuracies better than 0.001 of a pixel (assuming full SAR resolution) in the azimuth direction. Such a high accuracy can be achieved through geometric coregistration, using precise satellite orbits and a digital elevation model, followed by a refinement step using a time-series analysis of coregistration errors. These errors represent the misregistration between all TOPS acquisitions relative to the reference coordinate system. We develop a workflow to estimate the time series of azimuth misregistration using a network-based enhanced spectral diversity (NESD) approach, in order to reduce the impact of temporal decorrelation on coregistration. Example time series of misregistration inferred for five tracks of Sentinel-1 TOPS acquisitions indicates a maximum relative azimuth misregistration of less than 0.01 of the full azimuth resolution between the TOPS acquisitions in the studied areas. Standard deviation of the estimated misregistration time series for different stacks varies from 1.1e-3 to 2e-3 of the azimuth resolution, equivalent to 1.6-2.8 cm orbital uncertainty in the azimuth direction. These values fall within the 1-sigma orbital uncertainty of the Sentinel-1 orbits and imply that orbital uncertainty is most likely the main source of the constant azimuth misregistration between different TOPS acquisitions. We propagate the uncertainty of individual misregistration estimated with ESD to the misregistration time series estimated with NESD and investigate the different challenges for operationalizing NESD. Note de contenu : Introduction
