[Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) The need for comprehensive, accurate information on landcover change has never been greater. While remotely sensed imagery affords the opportunity to provide information on land-cover change over large geographic expanses at a relatively low cost, the characteristics of land-surface change bring into question the suitability of many commonly used methodologies. Algorithm-based methodologies to detect change generally cannot provide the same level of accuracy as the analyses done by human interpreters. Results from the Land Cover Trends project, a cooperative venture that includes the U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration, have shown that land-cover conversion is a relatively rare event, occurs locally in small patches, varies geographically and temporally, and is spectrally ambiguous. Based on these characteristics of change and the type of information required, manual interpretation was selected as the primary means of detecting change in the Land Cover Trends project. Mixtures of algorithm-based detection and manual interpretation may often prove to be the most feasible and appropriate design for change-detection applications. Serious examination of the expected characteristics and measurability of change must be considered during the design and implementation phase of any change analysis project. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data is introduced. The approach classifies not single pixels but groups of pixels that represent already existing objects in a GIS database. The approach is based on a supervised maximum likelihood classification. The multispectral bands grouped by objects and very different measures that can be derived from multispectral bands represent the n-dimensional feature space for the classification. The training areas are derived automatically from the geographical information system (GIS) database. After an introduction into the general approach, different input channels for the classification are defined and discussed. The results of a test on two test areas are presented. Afterwards, further measures, which can improve the result of the classification and enable the distinction between more land-use classes than with the introduced approach, are presented. [Termes IGN] classification par maximum de vraisemblanceRésumé : (Auteur) A typical remote sensing data clustering is the maximum likelihood supervised procedure. It consists of the estimation of a suitable mixture of distributions, based on training samples only, and in the subsequent pixelbypixel classification, performed by maximizing the likelihood ratio. In this way all the information on the parameters of the distributions, contained in the unsurveyed samples, is lost. In the paper it is proposed to apply a suitable Bayesian method, known as a data augmentation algorithm, to fully exploit the information contained in the data. The method is presented in detail and applied to an elementary simulated example proving its capability of achieving almost the theoretical limit for the classification error. Comparisons with current classification methods as well as an application to a real dataset are reported. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The unprecedented large size and high dimensionality of existing geographic datasets make the complex patterns that potentially lurk in the data hard to find. Clustering is one of the most important techniques for geographic knowledge discovery. However, existing clustering methods have two severe drawbacks for this purpose. First, spatial clustering methods focus on the specific characteristics of distributions in 2or 3D space, while general-purpose highdimensional clustering methods have limited power in recognizing spatial patterns that involve neighbors. Second, clustering methods in general are not geared toward allowing the humancomputer interaction needed to effectively teaseout complex patterns.
In the current paper, an approach is proposed to open up the "black box" of the clustering process for easy understanding, steering, focusing and interpretation, and thus to support an effective exploration of large and high dimensional geographic data. The proposed approach involves building a hierarchical spatial cluster structure ithin the highdimensional feature space, and using this combined space for discovering multidimensional (combined spatial and nonspatial) patterns with efficient computational clustering methods and highly interactive visualization techniques. More specifically, this includes the integration of: (1) a hierarchical spatial clustering method to generate a 1D spatial cluster ordering that preserves the hierarchical cluster structure, and (2) a density and gridbased technique to effectively support the interactive identification of interesting subspaces and subsequent searching for clusters in each subspace. The implementation of the proposed approach is in a fully open and interactive manner supported by various visualization techniques.
