[Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (auteur) 3D reconstruction of trees is of great interest in large-scale 3D city modelling. Laser scanners provide geometrically accurate 3D point clouds that are very useful for object recognition in complex urban scenes. Trees often cause important occlusions on building façades. Their recognition can lead to occlusion maps that are useful for many façade oriented applications such as visual based localisation and automatic image tagging. This paper proposes a pipeline to detect trees in point clouds acquired in dense urban areas with only laser informations (x,y, z coordinates and intensity). It is based on local geometric descriptors computed on each laser point using a determined neighbourhood. These descriptors describe the local shape of objects around every 3D laser point. A projection of these values on a 2D horizontal accumulation space followed by a combination of morphological filters provides individual tree clusters. The pipeline is evaluated and the results are presented on a set of one million laser points using a man made ground truth. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Light detection and ranging (lidar) provides a promising way of detecting changes of vegetation in three dimensions (3D) because the beam of laser may penetrate through the foliage of vegetation. This study aims at the detection of changes in trees in urban areas with a high level of automation using mutil-temporal airborne lidar point clouds. Three datasets covering a part of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, have been classified into several classes including trees. A connected components algorithm was applied first to group the points of trees together. The attributes of components were utilized to differentiate tree components from misclassified non-tree components. A point based local maxima algorithm was implemented to distinguish single tree from multiple tree components. After that, the parameters of trees were derived through two independent ways: a point based method using 3D alpha shapes and convex hulls; and a model based method which fits a Pollock tree model to the points. Then the changes were detected by comparing the parameters of corresponding tree components which were matched by a tree to tree matching algorithm using the overlapping of bounding boxes and point to point distances. The results were visualized and statistically analyzed. The difference of parameters and the difference of changes derived from point based and model based methods were both lower than 10%. The comparison of these two methods illustrates the consistency and stability of the parameters. The detected changes show the potential to monitor the growth and pruning of trees. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Research in the area of 3D city modelling from remote sensed data greatly developed in recent years with an emphasis on systems dealing with the detection and representation of man-made objects, such as buildings and streets. While these systems produce accurate representations of urban environments, they ignore information about the vegetation component of a city. This paper presents a complete image analysis system which, from high-resolution color infrared (CIR) digital images, and a Digital Surface Model (DSM), extracts, segments and classifies vegetation in high density urban areas, with very high reliability. The process starts with the extraction of all vegetation areas using a supervised classification system based on a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. The result of this first step is further on used to separate trees from lawns using texture criteria computed on the DSM. Tree crown borders are identified through a robust region growing algorithm based on tree-shape criteria. A SVM classifier gives the species class for each tree region previously identified. This classification is used to enhance the appearance of 3D city models by a realistic representation of vegetation according to the vegetation land use, shape and tree species. [Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we present an approach to detecting trees in registered aerial image and range data obtained via LiDAR. The motivation for this problem comes from automated city modeling, in which such data is used to generate textured 3-D models. Representing the trees in these models is problematic because the data is usually too sparsely sampled in tree regions to create an accurate 3-D model of the trees. Furthermore, including the tree data points interferes with the polygonization step of the building roof top models. Therefore, it is advantageous to detect and remove points that represent trees in both LiDAR and aerial imagery. In this paper, we propose a two-step method for tree detection consisting of segmentation followed by classification. The segmentation is done using a simple region-growing algorithm using weighted features from aerial image and LiDAR, such as height, texture map, height variation, and normal vector estimates. The weights for the features are determined using a learning method on random walks. The classification is done using weighted support vector machines (SVM), allowing us to control the misclassification rate. The overall problem is formulated as a binary detection problem, and receiver operating characteristic curves are shown to validate our approach.
