[Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (auteur) We propose a method for analysing landmark visibility from a pedestrian’s perspective. A case study is performed in Kraków, a city with many architectural monuments, where airborne LiDAR is used to model both buildings and urban greenery. The proposed method involves preliminary and detailed stages. The preliminary stage entails an inverse analysis (I–Vis) that departs from the typical visibility analysis to enable the use of landmarks as observers instead of targets. I–Vis results in paths with high landmark visibility. The detailed stage involves the use of a virtual panorama (V-Pan) to determine the visual exposure of the landmarks. Landmarks considered visible by I–Vis are generally consistent with landmarks identified by V-Pan. Discrepancies occur when trees appear in the near field-of-view. In addition, the accuracy of the skyline length and visible landmark surface area is evaluated against ground observations. The obtained results show that V-Pan can evaluate landmark visibility with an accuracy of approximately 75%. The key contributions of the work to visibility analysis of urban landmarks are in the inverse viewshed strategy and evaluation of the visual exposure parameters on LiDAR virtual panoramas. [Termes IGN] visibilité (optique)Résumé : (auteur) In this paper, we present a geometric approach to render shadows for physically based materials under polygonal light sources. Direct illumination calculation from a polygonal light source involves the triple product integral of the lighting, the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), and the visibility function over the polygonal domain, which is computation intensive. To achieve real-time performance, work on polygonal light shading exploits analytical solutions of boundary integrals along the edges of the polygonal light at the cost of lacking shadowing effects. We introduce a hierarchical representation for the precomputed visibility function to retain the merits of closed-form solutions for boundary integrals. Our method subdivides the polygonal light into a set of polygons visible from a point to be shaded. Experimental results show that our method can render complex shadows with a GGX microfacet BRDF from polygonal light sources at interactive frame rates. In addition, our visibility representation can be easily incorporated into environment lighting. [Termes IGN] visibilité (optique)Résumé : (auteur) The measurement of atmospheric visibility is an important element for road and air transportation safety. We propose in this paper a novel estimator of the atmospheric visibility by already existing conventional highway cameras, with a technique based on the gradient magnitude selected by applying Lambert’s law with respect to changes in lighting conditions. The response of this estimator is calibrated by non-linear regression with data from a visibility meter installed in a test site which has been instrumented with a camera. Through our technique, atmospheric visibility estimates are obtained with an average error of 30% for images taken in the day, with sky luminance between 10 and 8000 cd m−2 and visibility distances up to 15 km. Our results allow us to envision practical implementation on roadsides in the near future to determine local visibility for the benefit of road safety, meteorological observation and air quality monitoring. [Termes IGN] visibilité (optique)Résumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric visibility is an important input for road and air transportation safety, as well as a good proxy to estimate the air quality. A model-driven approach is presented to monitor the meteorological visibility distance through use of ordinary outdoor cameras. Unlike in previous data-driven approaches, a physics-based model is proposed which describes the mapping function between the contrast distribution in the image and the atmospheric visibility. The model is non-linear, which allows encompassing a large spectrum of applications. The model assumes a continuous distribution of objects with respect to the distance in the scene and is estimated by a novel process. It is more robust to illumination variations by selecting the Lambertian surfaces in the scene. To evaluate the relevance of the approach, a publicly available database is used. When the model is fitted to short range data, the proposed method is shown to be effective and to improve on existing methods. In particular, it allows envisioning an easier deployment of these camera-based techniques on multiple observation sites.
