[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Diplodia shoot blight is an emergent forest disease in Europe caused by Diplodia sapinea. The short-term impacts of the pathogen on tree physiology are well known, but its capacity to cause mortality has been poorly documented. We compared the survival of four pine species affected by Diplodia shoot blight following a hailstorm: Pinus sylvestris, P. nigra, P. pinea and P. halepensis. In the case of P. sylvestris, survival in the hail-affected sites was compared with survival in other sites affected by Diplodia shoot blight with no hailstorm records. Mortality and crown condition were recorded over two years. Dendrochronological analyses were conducted to assess growth responses to drought and to test the influence of radial growth before the outbreak of Diplodia shoot blight on survival. The endophytic community, as well as the abundance of D. sapinea, was quantified by metabarcoding and qPCR respectively, and were correlated with crown damage. Crown damage was the best predictor of mortality across species. Pinus sylvestris experienced a much higher rate of mortality than P. nigra, P. pinea and P. halepensis. Two years after the outbreak, P. halepensis was the only species that could recover crown condition. Mortality was found to be unrelated to radial growth prior the outbreak. Drought responses did not correlate with mortality differences across pine species or sites. In the case of P. sylvestris, mortality was initially higher amongst diseased trees in areas affected by hailstorms than in sites not affected by hailstorms, however it tended to equalise after two years. Amongst P. sylvestris trees, crown damage correlated with a higher abundance of the pathogen. Signs of competition amongst endophytes were observed between non-defoliated and defoliated Scots pine trees following hailstorms. Our study shows that D. sapinea can cause a significant mortality to P. sylvestris. The legacy effects of crown damage can last for at least two years after an outbreak. During this time, crown damage is a good predictor of survival, and can help managers decide which trees remove after an outbreak. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this study was to evaluate Scots pine stand degradation caused by the pollutants emitted from Zakłądy Azotowe Puławy, one of the biggest polluters of the environment in Poland for over 25 years (1966–1990). To assess the pollution stress in trees, we chose the dendrochronological analysis We outlined three directions for our research: (i) the spatio-temporal distribution of the growth response of trees to the stress associated with air pollution; (ii) the direct and indirect effects of air pollution which may have influenced the growth response of trees; and (iii) the role of local factors, both environmental and technological, in shaping the growth response of trees. Eight Scots pine stands were selected for study, seven plots located in different damage zones and a reference plot in an undamaged stand. We found that pollutant emission caused disturbances of incremental dynamics and long-term strong reduction of growth. A significant decrease in growth was observed for the majority of investigated trees (75%) from 1966 (start of factory) to the end of the 1990s. The zone of destruction extended primarily in easterly and southern directions, from the pollution source, associated with the prevailing winds of the region. At the end of the 1990s, the decreasing trend stopped and the wider tree-rings could be observed. This situation was related to a radical reduction in ammonia emissions and an improvement in environmental conditions. However, the growth of damaged trees due to the weakened health condition is lower than the growth of Scots pine on the reference plot and trees are more sensitive to stressful climatic conditions, especially to drought. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Coppice management is an ecologically important silvicultural practice to provide the quicker and higher potential of wood biomass production for industrial demands. Understanding morphological and anatomical responses of coppiced trees could help to determine the quantity and quality of wood and thus provide better management of coppiced tree plantations for short-time biomass production. However, there is a little investigation in morphological and anatomical adaptation in different fast-growing tree species. The present study, therefore, studied how morphology and anatomy vary between two fast-growing coppices of Populus nigra L. (black poplar) and Salix alba L. (white willow). Each coppiced tree was grown in a similar habitat and was at a similar age. However, each coppiced tree showed different morphological and anatomical plasticity in their stems in response to environmental factors. Poplar coppices showed better anatomical properties due to greater vessel diameter, fibre length, fibre width, fibre wall thickness, and ray height; however willow coppices had better morphological plasticity which had higher average stem height and ring width. The results suggest that willow coppices had the greater height growth potential even at 2 years of age than poplar coppices.
