Context: Estimating forest site productivity under changing climate requires models that cover a wide range of site conditions. To exploit different inventory sources, we need harmonized measures and procedures for the productive potential. Static site indices (SI) appear to be a good choice.
Aims: We propose a method to derive static site indices for different inventory designs and apply it to six tree species of the German and French National Forest Inventory (NFI). For Norway spruce and European beech, the climate dependency of SI is modeled in order to estimate trends in productivity due to climate change.
Methods: Height and age measures are determined from the top diameters of a species at a given site. The SI is determined for a reference age of 100 years.
Results: The top height proves as a stable height measure that can be derived harmoniously from German and French NFI. The boundaries of the age-height frame are well described by the Chapman-Richards function. For spruce and beech, generalized additive models of the SI against simple climate variables lead to stable and plausible model behavior.
Conclusion: The introduced methodology permits a harmonized quantification of forest site productivity by static site indices. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Past and present environmental changes cause significant changes in tree growth in many parts of the world, where both decreasing and increasing growth trends have been detected over the last decades. The Mediterranean basin is especially sensitive to climate change and subsequent tree growth declines. In this article, we present the first study on recent tree growth trends in Turkey. Pinus nigra is a drought-sensitive species and one of the most common and economically important native conifers to Turkey. Tree-ring cores were taken from 61 Pinus nigra plots spread over the entire Lakes District (Southwest Turkey), near the species’ southern range limit. The samples cover the 1839–2013 time period. We apply the Regional Curve Standardization technique and statistical modeling to the tree ring width data to investigate long-term growth trends. Both methods show remarkably similar results: a slowly increasing growth trend until the 1970s, followed by a decreasing trend. This recent negative trend is highly correlated with increased temperature and drought in summer, which suggests that it is likely caused by climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Better understanding and prediction of tree growth is important because of the many ecosystem services provided by forests and the uncertainty surrounding how forests will respond to anthropogenic climate change. With the ultimate goal of improving models of forest dynamics, here we construct a statistical model that combines complementary data sources, tree‐ring and forest inventory data. A Bayesian hierarchical model was used to gain inference on the effects of many factors on tree growth—individual tree size, climate, biophysical conditions, stand‐level competitive environment, tree‐level canopy status, and forest management treatments—using both diameter at breast height (dbh) and tree‐ring data. The model consists of two multiple regression models, one each for the two data sources, linked via a constant of proportionality between coefficients that are found in parallel in the two regressions. This model was applied to a data set of ~130 increment cores and ~500 repeat measurements of dbh at a single site in the Jemez Mountains of north‐central New Mexico, USA. The tree‐ring data serve as the only source of information on how annual growth responds to climate variation, whereas both data types inform non‐climatic effects on growth. Inferences from the model included positive effects on growth of seasonal precipitation, wetness index, and height ratio, and negative effects of dbh, seasonal temperature, southerly aspect and radiation, and plot basal area. Climatic effects inferred by the model were confirmed by a dendroclimatic analysis. Combining the two data sources substantially reduced uncertainty about non‐climate fixed effects on radial increments. This demonstrates that forest inventory data measured on many trees, combined with tree‐ring data developed for a small number of trees, can be used to quantify and parse multiple influences on absolute tree growth. We highlight the kinds of research questions that can be addressed by combining the high‐resolution information on climate effects contained in tree rings with the rich tree‐ and stand‐level information found in forest inventories, including projection of tree growth under future climate scenarios, carbon accounting, and investigation of management actions aimed at increasing forest resilience. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) We compared results derived using three different approaches to assess the suitability of common tree species on the Franconian Plateau in southern Germany under projected warmer and drier climate conditions in the period 2061-2080. The study area is currently a relatively warm and dry region of Germany. We calculated species distribution models (SDMs) using information on species’ climate envelopes to predict regional species spectra under 63 different climate change scenarios. We complemented this with fine-scale ecological niche analysis using data from 51 vegetation surveys in seven forest reserves in the study area, and tree-ring analysis (TRA) from local populations of five tree species to quantify their sensitivity to climatic extreme years. The SDMs showed that predicted future climate change in the region remains within the climate envelope of certain species (e.g. Quercus petraea), whilst for e.g. Fagus sylvatica, future climate conditions in one third of the scenarios are too warm and dry. This was confirmed by the TRA: sensitivity to drought periods is lower for Q. petraea than for F. sylvatica. The niche analysis shows that the local ecological niches of Quercus robur and Fraxinus excelsior are mainly characterized by soils providing favorable water supply than by climate, and Pinus sylvestris (planted) is strongly influenced by light availability. The best adapted species for a warmer and potentially drier climate in the study region are Acer campestre, Sorbus torminalis, S. aria, Ulmus minor, and Tilia platyphyllos, which should therefore play a more prominent role in future climate-resilient mixed forest ecosystems. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (auteur) Wood microdensitometry is the analysis of radial variations of density at the annual or intra-annual growth ring level. Density is related to wood quality, biomass, carbon content, tree growth and climate. Wood microdensitometry is particularly used in dendrochronology and climatology studies. The present study focuses on X-ray based methods used in wood microdensitometry analyses and provides a review of the main available devices. An exhaustive review of 75 works published on this topic in 2014 and 2015 showed that film-based equipment is still commonly used. The three other most popular devices, SilviScan, Itrax and QTRS, are also based on X-ray radiography and deliver results with comparable accuracy, below 50 μm per pixel. X-ray tomography (CT) is still rarely used in wood densitometry. Medical CT scanners currently offer a lower accuracy (above 100 μm per pixel) that is insufficient in most cases for ring or intra-ring scales. Micro-CT scanners offer good performance at the cost of much longer acquisition and reconstruction times.
