[Termes IGN] visionIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) This thesis work deals with extracting features and low-level primitives from perceptual image information to understand scenes. Motivated by the needs and problems in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) vision based navigation, we propose novel methods focusing on image understanding problems. This work explores three main pieces of information in an image: intensity, color, and texture. In the first chapter of the manuscript, we work with the intensity information through image contours. We combine this information with human perception concepts, such as the Helmholtz principle and the Gestalt laws, to propose an unsupervised framework for object detection and identification. We validate this methodology in the last stage of the drone navigation, just before the landing. In the following chapters of the manuscript, we explore the color and texture information contained in the images. First, we present an analysis of color and texture as global distributions of an image. This approach leads us to study the Optimal Transport theory and its properties as a true metric for color and texture distributions comparison. We review and compare the most popular similarity measures between distributions to show the importance of a metric with the correct properties such as non-negativity and symmetry. We validate such concepts in two image retrieval systems based on the similarity of color distribution and texture energy distribution. Finally, we build an image representation that exploits the relationship between color and texture information. The image representation results from the image’s spectral decomposition, which we obtain by the convolution with a family of Gabor filters. We present in detail the improvements to the Gabor filter and the properties of the complex color spaces. We validate our methodology with a series of segmentation and boundary detection algorithms based on the computed perceptual feature space. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Photogrammetric point clouds obtained with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have emerged as an alternative source of remotely sensed data for small area forest management inventories (FMI). Nonetheless, it is often overlooked that small area FMI require considerable field data in addition to UAS data, to support the modelling of forest attributes. In this study, we propose a method whereby tree volumes by species are predicted with photogrammetric UAS data and Sentinel-2 images, using models fitted with airborne laser scanning data. The study area is in a managed boreal forest area in Eastern Finland. First, we predicted total volume with UAS point cloud metrics using a prior regression model fitted in another area with ALS data. Tree species proportions were then predicted by k nearest neighbor (k-NN) imputation based on bi-seasonal Sentinel-2 images without measuring new field plot data. Species-specific volumes were then obtained by multiplying the total volume by species proportions. The relative root mean square error (RMSE) values for total and species-specific volume predictions at the validation plot level (30 m × 30 m) were 9.0%, and 33.4–62.6%, respectively. Our approach appears promising for species-specific small area FMI in Finland and in comparable forest conditions in which suitable field plots are available. [Termes IGN] phénologieRésumé : (auteur) Data on the distribution of tree species are often requested by forest managers, inventory agencies, foresters as well as private and municipal forest owners. However, the automated detection of tree species based on passive remote sensing data from aerial surveys is still not sufficiently developed to achieve reliable results independent of the phenological stage, time of day, season, tree vitality and prevailing atmospheric conditions. Here, we introduce a novel tree species classification approach based on high resolution RGB image data gathered during automated UAV flights that overcomes these insufficiencies. For the classification task, a computationally lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) was designed. We show that with the chosen CNN model architecture, average classification accuracies of 92% can be reached independently of the illumination conditions and the phenological stages of four different tree species. We also show that a minimal ground sampling density of 1.6 cm/px is needed for the classification model to be able to make use of the spatial-structural information in the data. Finally, to demonstrate the applicability of the presented approach to derive spatially explicit tree species information, a gridded product is generated that yields an average classification accuracy of 88%. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (Auteur) Up-to-date cadastral maps are crucial for urban planning. Creating those maps with the classical geodetic methods is expensive and time-consuming. Emerge of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) made a possibility for quick acquisition of data with much more details than it was possible before. The topic of the research refers to the challenges of automatic extraction of building footprints on high-resolution orthophotos. The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to test the possibility of using different publicly available datasets (Tanzania, AIRS and Inria) for neural network training and then test the generalisation capability of the model on the Area Of Interest (AOI); (2) to evaluate the effect of the normalised digital surface model (nDSM) on the results of neural network training and implementation. Evaluation of the results shown that the models trained on the Tanzania (IoU 36.4%), AIRS (IoU 64.4%) and Inria (IoU 7.4%) datasets doesn't satisfy the requested accuracy to update cadastral maps in study area. Much better results are achieved in the second part of the study, where the training of the neural network was done on tiles (256x256) of the orthophoto of AOI created from data acquired using UAV. A combination of RGB orthophoto with nDSM resulted in a 2% increase of IoU, achieving the final IoU of over 90%. [Termes IGN] image RVBRésumé : (auteur) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) greatly extended our possibilities to acquire high resolution remote sensing data for assessing the spatial distribution of species composition and vegetation characteristics. Yet, current pixel- or texture-based mapping approaches do not fully exploit the information content provided by the high spatial resolution. Here, to fully harness this spatial detail, we apply deep learning techniques, that is, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), on regular tiles of UAV-orthoimagery (here 2–5 m) to identify the cover of target plant species and plant communities. The approach was tested with UAV-based orthomosaics and photogrammetric 3D information in three case studies, that is, (1) mapping tree species cover in primary forests, (2) mapping plant invasions by woody species into forests and open land and (3) mapping vegetation succession in a glacier foreland. All three case studies resulted in high predictive accuracies. The accuracy increased with increasing tile size (2–5 m) reflecting the increased spatial context captured by a tile. The inclusion of 3D information derived from the photogrammetric workflow did not significantly improve the models. We conclude that CNN are powerful in harnessing high resolution data acquired from UAV to map vegetation patterns. The study was based on low cost red, green, blue (RGB) sensors making the method accessible to a wide range of users. Combining UAV and CNN will provide tremendous opportunities for ecological applications.
