[Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite-based mapping can provide a timely and efficient means of identifying burned vegetation at continental scales for estimating greenhouse gas emissions and impacts on the terrestrial carbon budget. In this study, we used a sample of 55 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes distributed across Canada to validate and calibrate 1998 and 1999 national-level burned areas maps produced using coarse resolution (approx. 1-km) SPOT VEGETATION and NOAA AVHRR imagery. Commission and omissions errors, based on fire events greater than 200 ha, were found to be small in the coarse resolution maps (4 percent and 1 percent, respectively). However, the coarse resolution burned-area estimates were 72 percent larger than the crown fire burned area mapped at 30 m using Landsat TM (11,039 versus 6,403 ha average area). This bias was attributed to spatial aggregation effects in which the coarse resolution product included the tree crown fire, partial burn, and unburned fractions of a pixel. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article considers two types of tools used for the analysis of spatial data: computational tools for grid data and visualizationbased interactive exploratory techniques. The main purpose is to demonstrate that computational and visual techniques are complementary, and their combined use in data analysis may produce a synergistic effect. To this end, we describe two example scenarios of data analysis in the evaluation of potential damage from earthquakes and in analysis of forest resources. The analyses were performed with the use of CommonGIS, featuring the availability of powerful geocomputational tools and interactive visualizationrelated facilities that can be efficiently used in combination in a desktop environment or via the World Wide Web. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The identification and classification of mountain pine beetle, Dentroctonus ponderos (Hopkins), red-attack damage patterns in a mature lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forest located in the Forst St-James forest Distric, British Columbia, was accomplished using 1999 Landsat TM satellite imagery, 1999 mountain pine beetle field and aerial survey point data, and GIS forest inventory data. Unrelated variance in the observed spectral response at mountain pine beetle field and aerial survey points was reduced following image stratification with the GIS forest inventory data and removal of other factors uncharacteristic of red-attack damage. Locations of known mountain pine beetle infestation were used to train a maximum-likelihood algorithm ; overall classification accuracy was 73 percent, based on an assessment of 360 independent validation points. If local stand variability is reduced prior to signature generation, accuracies and mao products can be useful for those involved in active forest management decision making regarding mountain pine beetle infestations. [Termes IGN] sédimentRésumé : (Auteur) On November the 13th of 1985, the City of Armero (Colombia) was destroyed by debris flows generated by a reactivation of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano. The flows ocurred in at least three principal pulses, as was observed by the disater's survivors. Landsat TM 5 data processing was carried out in subscenes taken before and after the lahar sedimentation. False color composites were generated and combined with the geological information available in order to visualize the magnitude of the catastrophe and the flow characteristics. Taking advantage of Landsat TM 5 images with high spectral resolution, a detailed photogeological mapping of the three principal pulses of the debris flows was carried out. Landsat TM 5 proved to be a powerful complementary source of information for hazard assesment of these catastrophic debris flows. The images were used in addition to groundbased information, and were an easy way to help ordinary people and decision makers understand such hazardous volcanic situations.
