[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The ever-increasing population causes huge pressure on the areas already inhabited and causes a decrease in an area per capita. This fact necessitates an essential demand for evaluating and classifying the soil according to its agricultural productivity for different crops. This research aimed to evaluate lands which proposed to use in the agricultural field in the south of Al-Dabaa Corridor based on remote sensed data and GIS techniques. Moreover, the future optimum agricultural use planning will be projected based on the land assessments in the study area. Land suitability was evaluated using ALES-arid software for six crops. It was found that 74% of the study area was suitable for one fruit crop, date palm, and about 77.3% for one crop, alfalfa, and also suitable for one vegetable crop, tomato, by 77.1%. Furthermore, it was found that the study area was moderately suitable for other two crops, faba bean and maize (72.7 and 67.8%), and one fruit crop, citrus (70.1%). On the other hand, it was found that the characteristics that most affected the suitability class of fruit crops were soil salinity, soil depth, ESP, slope, and coarse texture. Finally, the study area should go under major reclamation process (removal of the excess salts and improvement of the drainage conditions) in order to obtain the highest production. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This study focused on monitoring the water status of vegetation and soil by exploiting the synergy of optical and microwave satellite data with the aim of improving the knowledge of water cycle in cultivated lands in Egyptian Delta and Tunisian areas. Environmental analysis approaches based on optical and synthetic aperture radar data were carried out to set up the basis for future implementation of practical and cost-effective methods for sustainable water use in agriculture. Long-term behaviors of vegetation indices were thus analyzed between 2000 and 2018. By using SAR data from Sentinel-1, an Artificial Neural Network-based algorithm was implemented for estimating soil moisture and monthly maps for 2018 have been generated to be compared with information derived from optical indices. Moreover, a novel drought severity index was developed and applied to available data. The index was obtained by combining vegetation soil difference index, derived from optical data, and soil moisture content derived from SAR data. The proposed index was found capable of complementing optical and microwave sensitivity to drought-related parameters, although ground data are missing for correctly validating the results, by capturing drought patterns and their temporal evolution better than indices based only on microwave or optical data. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) Data assimilation techniques allow researchers to optimally merge remote sensing observations in ecohydrological models, guiding them for improving land surface fluxes predictions. Presently, freely available remote sensing products, such as those of Sentinel 1 radar, Landsat 8 sensors, and Sentinel 2 sensors, allow the monitoring of land surface variables (e.g., radar backscatter for soil moisture and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and for leaf area index (LAI)) at unprecedentedly high spatial and time resolutions, appropriate for heterogeneous ecosystems, typical of semiarid ecosystems characterized by contrasting vegetation components (grass and trees) competing for water use. A multiscale assimilation approach that assimilates radar backscatter and grass and tree NDVI in a coupled vegetation dynamic–land surface model is proposed. It is based on the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), and it is not limited to assimilating remote sensing data for model predictions, but it uses assimilated data for dynamically updating key model parameters (the ENKFdc approach), including saturated hydraulic conductivity and grass and tree maintenance respiration coefficients, which are highly sensitive parameters of soil–water balance and biomass budget models, respectively. The proposed EnKFdc assimilation approach facilitated good predictions of soil moisture, grass, and tree LAI in a heterogeneous ecosystem in Sardinia for a 3-year period with contrasting hydrometeorological (dry vs. wet) conditions. Contrary to the EnKF-based approach, the proposed EnKFdc approach performed well for the full range of hydrometeorological conditions and parameters, even assuming extremely biased model conditions with very high or low parameter values compared with the calibrated (“true”) values. The EnKFdc approach is crucial for soil moisture and LAI predictions in winter and spring, key seasons for water resources management in Mediterranean water-limited ecosystems. The use of ENKFdc also enabled us to predict evapotranspiration and carbon flux well, with errors of less than 4% and 15%, respectively; such results were obtained even with extremely biased initial model conditions. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieMots-clés libres : Rainfall interception loss Résumé : (auteur) Understanding the interaction between canopy structure and the parameters of interception loss is essential in predicting the variations in partitioning rainfall and water resources as affected by changes in canopy structure and in implementing water-based management in semiarid forest plantations. In this study, seasonal variations in rainfall interception loss and canopy storage capacity as driven by canopy structure were predicted and the linkages were tested using seasonal filed measurements. The study was conducted in nine 50 m × 50 m Robinia pseudoacacia plots in the semiarid region of China’s Loess Plateau. Gross rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were measured in seasons with and without leaves in 2015 and 2016. Results show that measured average interception loss for the nine plots were 17.9% and 9.4% of gross rainfall during periods with leaves (the growing season) and without leaves, respectively. Average canopy storage capacity estimated using an indirect method was 1.3 mm in the growing season and 0.2 mm in the leafless season. Correlations of relative interception loss and canopy storage capacity to canopy variables were highest for leaf/wood area index (LAI/WAI) and canopy cover, followed by bark area, basal area, tree height and stand density. Combined canopy cover, leaf/wood area index and bark area multiple regression models of interception loss and canopy storage capacity were established for the growing season and in the leafless season in 2015. It explained 97% and 96% of the variations in relative interception loss during seasons with and without leaves, respectively. It also explained 98% and 99% of the variations in canopy storage capacity during seasons with and without leaves, respectively. The empirical regression models were validated using field data collected in 2016. The models satisfactorily predicted relative interception loss and canopy storage capacity during seasons with and without leaves. This study provides greater understanding about the effects of changes in tree canopy structure (e.g., dieback or mortality) on hydrological processes. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This study compared the traditional regression models and support vector machine (SVM) for estimation of aboveground biomass (ABG) of an agro-pastoral ecology using vegetation indices derived from Landsat 8 satellite data as explanatory variables . The area falls in the Shivpuri Tehsil of Madhya Pradesh, India, which is predominantly a semi-arid tract of the Bundelkhand region. The Enhanced Vegetation Index-1 (EVI-1) was identified as the most suitable input variable for the regression models, although the collective effect of a number of the vegetation indices was evident. The EVI-1 was also the most suitable input variable to SVM, due to its capacity to distinctly differentiate diverse vegetation classes. The performance of SVM was better over regression models for estimation of the AGB. Based on the SVM-derived and the ground observations, the AGB of the area was precisely mapped for croplands, grassland and rangelands over the entire region.
