[Termes IGN] réseau neuronal convolutifRésumé : (Auteur) Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained with satellite imagery have been successfully used to generate measures of development indicators, such as poverty, in developing nations. This article explores a CNN‐based approach leveraging Landsat 8 imagery to predict locations of conflict‐related deaths. Using Nigeria as a case study, we use the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) dataset to identify locations of conflict events that did or did not result in a death. Imagery for each location is used as an input to train a CNN to distinguish fatal from non‐fatal events. Using 2014 imagery, we are able to predict the result of conflict events in the following year (2015) with 80% accuracy. While our approach does not replace the need for causal studies into the drivers of conflict death, it provides a low‐cost solution to prediction that requires only publicly available imagery to implement. Findings suggest that the information contained in moderate‐resolution imagery can be used to predict the likelihood of a death due to conflict at a given location in Nigeria the following year, and that CNN‐based methods of estimating development‐related indicators may be effective in applications beyond those explored in the literature. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses the suitability of different cartographic design variants for visually communicating recommended routes. We performed a user study, investigating the potential of six different design variants (color hue, distortion, length distortion, size, spacing, and symbols) for influencing route choice using cartographic visualization methods while recommending a longer, but less congested route. The visualizations for all design variants have been prepared in three different levels of intensity of modification (weak, medium, and strong). Although the input data (traffic density) is the same for all representation methods, variations are each visualized using different cartographic design principles. Our results showed that in general, for the majority of routing scenarios, the participants’ route choice has been significantly influenced toward choosing the recommended route – indicating that the modification of route visualizations does actually lead to a different route choice behavior. Results further revealed that for most variants, willingness to choose the recommended route increases with higher intensity of modification. While some of the design variants like symbols or length distortion have been found effective for recommending routes at all levels of intensity, others like size and spacing have not been found suitable. A comparison between route choices and estimated route characteristics suggested a close relationship between willingness to choose the recommended route and the characteristics participants associate with the representation. In particular, route visualizations that create an impression of faster, more convenient, or more fluent travel experience are more likely to influence route choice behavior. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) Pedestrian detection and re-identification technology is a research hotspot in the field of computer vision. This technology currently has issues such as insufficient pedestrian expression ability, occlusion, diverse pedestrian attitude, and difficulty of small-scale pedestrian detection. In this paper, we proposed an end-to-end pedestrian detection and re-identification model in real scenes, which can effectively solve these problems. In our model, the original images are processed with a non-overlapped image blocking data augmentation method, and then input them into the YOLOv3 detector to obtain the object position information. LCNN-based pedestrian re-identification model is used to extract the features of the object. Furthermore, the eigenvectors of the object and the detected pedestrians are calculated, and the similarity between them are used to determine whether they can be marked as target pedestrians. Our method is lightweight and end-to-end, which can be applied to the real scenes. [Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (auteur) Human emotion is an intrinsic psychological state that is influenced by human thoughts and behaviours. Human emotion distribution has been regarded as an important part of emotional geography research. However, it is difficult to form a global scaled map reflecting human emotions at the same sampling density because various emotional sampling data are usually positive occurrences without absence data. In this study, a methodological framework for mapping the global geographic distribution of human emotion is proposed and applied, combining a species distribution model with physical environment factors. State-of-the-art affective computing technology is used to extract human emotions from facial expressions in Flickr photos. Various human emotions are considered as different species to form their ‘habitats’ and predict the suitability, termed as ‘Emotional Habitat’. To our knowledge, this framework is the first method to predict emotional distribution from an ecological perspective. Different geographic distributions of seven dimensional emotions are explored and depicted, and emotional diversity and abnormality are detected at the global scale. These results confirm the effectiveness of our framework and offer new insights to understand the relationship between human emotions and the physical environment. Moreover, our method facilitates further rigorous exploration in emotional geography and enriches its content.
