[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Sustainable forest management requires the ability to accurately model forest dynamics under a changing environment, which is difficult using conventional statistical methods as many factors that interactively affect forest growth must be considered. As well, statistical model development is often limited by the lack of broad-scale repeated forest measurements needed to capture changes in 1 or more variables and the corresponding changes in forest dynamics (e.g., growth in diameter and height), while assuming other variables do not change, or their changes do not significantly affect the forest dynamics of interest. In many forested countries, comprehensive monitoring programs have amassed large amounts of diverse forest measurement data. Here we propose a new approach for using artificial neural network-based machine learning to synthesize spatiotemporal tree measurement data collected over a vast area of boreal forest in central Canada to model diameter at breast height (DBH)-height and DBH-height-age relationships for 6 dominant tree species. More than 30 potentially important stand structure, site, and climate variables were considered. We used an individual-based modelling approach by considering each individual tree measurement as an instance of the complex relationships modelled; together, broad-scale long-term monitoring data contain many such instances, representing considerable spatial and temporal scale variation in forest growth and growing conditions. Using this approach, we significantly improved DBH-height and DBH-height-age models. And the models developed allowed us to analyze the effects of environmental conditions or changes in these conditions on forest growth. This may be the first attempt at applying this type of approach, which can be used to more accurately model, for example, forest growth, mortality, and how they are affected by changing climate in a variety of forest types. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) New genotypes of hybrid poplars from the Aigeiros and Tacamahaca sections have great potential for increasing genetic gain from selection. The most promising traits are associated with productivity and resistance to Sphaerulina musiva -induced canker while wood density can be selected for secondarily. A minimum age of 8 years is reliable to select fast-growing resistant clones in northern climates. Productivity, wood density, and disease resistance of hybrid poplar clones are important traits when selecting for cultivation at an industrial scale. We studied 1978 hybrid poplar clones from 63 families, bred from poplars native (Populus balsamifera and Populus deltoides) and non-native to Canada from the Aigeiros and Tacamahaca sections, to improve economically important traits for plantations in northern Alberta. Single-channel algorithm (SCA) and dual-channel algorithm (DCA) are implemented for the processing of SMAP radiometer data. The SCA using the vertically polarized brightness temperature (SCA-V) has been providing satisfactory SM retrievals. However, the DCA using prelaunch design and algorithm parameters for vertical and horizontal polarization data has a marginal performance. In this article, we show that with the updates of the roughness parameter h and the polarization mixing parameters Q , a modified DCA (MDCA) can achieve improved accuracy over DCA; it also allows for the retrieval of vegetation optical depth (VOD or τ ). The retrieval performance of MDCA is assessed and compared with SCA-V and DCA using four years (April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2019) of in situ data from core validation sites (CVSs) and sparse networks. The assessment shows that SCA-V still outperforms all the implemented algorithms. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In a mixed, Fagus sylvatica L.- Acer pseudoplatanus L., young plantation, trees of both species absorbed water from superficial soil layers despite the presence of roots and water in deeper layers. Admixture proportion and tree density were weak predictors of water acquisition depth, as well as fine root vertical distribution, although it might be due to distinct periods of root and isotope investigations.
Promoting mixed forests and reducing stand densities have been proposed as effective ways to maintain the productivity of temperate planted forest stands in a changing climate.
The objective of this study was to analyse how stand density and the degree of admixture of European beech and sycamore maple interactively influenced the water acquisition profile of individual trees. We used a stable isotope (deuterium) approach to determine the profiles of soil water acquisition of both species in a 16-year-old plantation where trees had been planted along crossed gradients of tree density and species proportion. The profiles were then compared with the vertical distribution of fine root of these species in the plantation. All the target trees mostly absorbed soil water from the first few centimetres of soil despite homogenous vertical water availability and the fact that a great part of the fine root biomass was located below 10 cm. Admixture proportion and tree density had negligible effects on soil water acquisition depth. No vertical differentiation of soil water acquisition between the two species was observed, suggesting that mixing these species does not promote reduction of belowground competition for resource acquisition. The vertical distribution of fine root may be a weak predictor of water acquisition depth.

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Past failures of monocultures, caused by wind-throw or insect damages, and ongoing climate change currently strongly stimulate research into mixed-species stands. So far, the focus has mainly been on combinations of species with obvious complementary functional traits. However, for any generalization, a broad overview of the mixing reactions of functionally different tree species in different mixing proportions, patterns and under different site conditions is needed, including assemblages of species with rather similar demands on resources such as light. Here, we studied the growth of Scots pine and oak in mixed versus monospecific stands on 36 triplets located along a productivity gradient across Europe, reaching from Sweden to Spain and from France to Georgia. The set-up represents a wide variation in precipitation (456–1250 mm year−1), mean annual temperature (6.7–11.5 °C) and drought index by de Martonne (21–63 mm °C−1). Stand inventories and increment cores of trees stemming from 40- to 132-year-old, fully stocked stands on 0.04–0.94-ha-sized plots provided insight into how species mixing modifies stand growth and structure compared with neighbouring monospecific stands. On average, the standing stem volume was 436 and 360 m3 ha−1 in the monocultures of Scots pine and oak, respectively, and 418 m3 ha−1 in the mixed stands. The corresponding periodical annual volume increment amounted to 10.5 and 9.1 m3 ha−1 year−1 in the monocultures and 10.5 m3 ha−1 year−1 in the mixed stands.
