[Termes IGN] strontiumRésumé : (auteur) From the summit downslope a granitic inselberg in French Guiana, soils and vegetation evolve from bare granite covered by cyanobacteria, to a savannah-type vegetation on thin patchy sandy accumulations, then to a low forest on shallow young soils and to a high forest on deep highly weathered ultisols. We have used element budgets and Sr isotopic variations in soils and plants to investigate the mineral nutrient supply sources of the different plant communities. Granite and atmospheric deposition have 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 1.3 and 0.71, respectively. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of cyanobacteria (0.72) suggests granite weathering by cyanobacteria crusts. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the savannah-type vegetation is 0.73 and varies between 0.75 and 0.76 in the low and high forest leaf litter regardless of soil depth, age and degree of impoverishment. These almost constant ratio suggest that forest Sr comes from rainwater and from the summit of this inselberg, where it is released and redistributed along the slope, by surface flow, lateral redistribution of litter, and mineral particles. However, because of its very low content in the rock and soils, Ca is supplied to plants by atmospheric deposition. [Termes IGN] sol forestierRésumé : (auteur) Soil resources are heterogeneously distributed in terrestrial plant communities. This heterogeneity is important because it determines the availability of local soil resources. A forest fire may change the spatial distribution of soil nutrients, affecting nutrition and survival of colonizing plants. However, specific information on the effects of ecosystem disturbance on the spatial distribution of soil resources is scarce. We hypothesized that, on a short-term basis, wildfire would change the spatial patterns of soil N and P availability. To test this hypothesis, we selected two Pinus canariensis forests burned in 2005 and 2000, respectively, and a third forest that was unburned since at least 1990 (unburned). We incubated ionic exchange membranes (IEMs) in replicated plots to estimate soil N and P availability and characterized the spatial pattern using SADIE (Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices). Mineral N, NO3-N and PO4-P availability, and aggregation and cluster indices for all nutrients were higher in the 2005 wildfire plots than in the 2000 wildfire and unburned plots. Our results suggest that surviving plants or new individuals becoming established in a burned area would find higher soil resources, but also higher small-scale heterogeneity in nutrients, which may have a major impact on the performance of individual plants and on the forest structure and dynamics. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) Five temperate broad-leaved tree species were compared with respect to their water consumption strategies under ample and restricted water supply. We measured synchronously leaf conductance $(g_{\rm L})$ in the sun canopy, xylem sap flux $(J_{\rm s})$ and leaf water potential (predawn, $\Psi _{\rm pd}$ and noon, $\Psi _{\rm noon}$) in adult trees in a mixed stand and related them to the fluctuations in vapor pressure deficit (D) and soil moisture. • Maximum $g_{\rm L}$ was particularly high in F. excelsior, C. betulus and T. cordata and revealed a higher D sensitivity. $\Psi _{\rm pd}$ remained constantly high in A. pseudoplatanus, C. betulus and F. excelsior, but decreased in T. cordata and F. sylvatica with decreasing soil moisture. • $J_{\rm sd}$ decreased linearly with decreasing soil matrix potential in all species except for F. excelsior. Apparent hydraulic conductance in the soil-to-leaf flow path $(L_{\rm c})$ was higher in A. pseudoplatanus than in the other species. • F. sylvatica maintained a low maximum $g_{\rm L}$ and reduced $J_{\rm sd}$ markedly upon drought, but faced severe decreases in $\Psi _{\rm pd}$ and $\Psi _{\rm noon}$. F. excelsior represents an opposite strategy with high maximum $g_{\rm L}$ and stable $\Psi _{\rm pd}$. • The species drought sensitivity increases in the sequence F. excelsior Numéro de notice : A2009-723 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1051/forest/2008076 Date de publication en ligne : 31/01/2009 En ligne : https://www.afs-journal.org/articles/forest/abs/2009/01/f08128/f08128.html Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=71759

[Termes IGN] RoumanieRésumé : (Auteur) "Bud burst and flowering phenology have been observed in year 2008 in a natural white oak species complex situated in eastern Romania. A total of 300 mature individuals was mapped and identified based on leaf morphology. The community consists of four oak species: Quercus pedunculiflora, Q. robur, Q. pubescens and Q. petraea. A set of 28 individuals could not be unambiguously classified to one or another species. Data on bud burst showed a normal distribution and the differences among species were small. The "very late" flushing was recorded on 15th of April, three weeks later when compared to early flushing individuals. The time period between the bud burst and the complete development of leaves was nearly the same in all oak species, varying on average, between 18.4 and 20.6 days. The spatial distribution of phenological groups within the complex appears to be non-randomly, because in many parts of the study plot exist groups in which most of the trees belong to the same phenological category. Our results indicate an overlap in flowering time for all oak species which occur in the area. The data support the hypothesis that interspecific gene flow is possible between closely related oak species."
