[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Strong density differences were observed between stem wood at 1.30 m and other tree components (stem wood, stem bark, knots, branch stumps and branches). The difference, up to 40% depending on the component, should be taken into account when estimating the biomass available for industrial uses, mainly fuelwood and wood for chemistry.
Context: Basic density is a major variable in the calculation of tree biomass. However, it is usually measured on stem wood only and at breast height.
Aims: The objectives of this study were to compare basic density of stem wood at 1.30 m with other tree components and assess the impact of differences on biomass.
Methods: Three softwood species were studied: Abies alba Mill., Picea abies (L.) H. Karst., Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. X-Ray computed tomography was used to measure density.
Results: Large differences were observed between components. Basic density of components was little influenced by tree size and stand density. Overall, bark, knot and branch biomasses were highly underestimated by using basic density measured at 1.30 m.
Conclusion: Using available wood density databases mainly based on breast height measurements would lead to important biases (up to more than 40%) on biomass estimates for some tree components. Further work is necessary to complete available databases.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Research Highlights: This is the first study that has considered forest management and wildfires in the balance of living biomass and carbon stored in Mediterranean forests. Background and Objectives: The Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement request countries to estimate and report carbon emissions and removals from the forest in a transparent and reliable way. The aim of this study is to forecast the carbon stored in the living biomass of Spanish forests for the period 2000–2050 under two forest management alternatives and three forest wildfires scenarios. Materials and Methods: To produce these estimates, we rely on data from the Spanish National Forest Inventory (SNFI) and we use the European Forestry Dynamics Model (EFDM). SNFI plots were classified according to five static (forest type, known land-use restrictions, ownership, stand structure and bioclimatic region) and two dynamic factors (quadratic mean diameter and total volume). The results were validated using data from the latest SNFI cycle (20-year simulation). Results: The increase in wildfire occurrence will lead to a decrease in biomass/carbon between 2000 and 2050 of up to 22.7% in the medium–low greenhouse gas emissions scenario (B2 scenario) and of up to 32.8% in the medium–high greenhouse gas emissions scenario (A2 scenario). Schoolbook allocation management could buffer up to 3% of wildfire carbon loss. The most stable forest type under both wildfire scenarios are Dehesas. As regards bioregions, the Macaronesian area is the most affected and the Alpine region, the least affected. Our validation test revealed a total volume underestimation of 2.2% in 20 years. Conclusions: Forest wildfire scenarios provide more realistic simulations in Mediterranean forests. The results show the potential benefit of forest management, with slightly better results in schoolbook forest management compared to business-as-usual forest management. The EFDM harmonized approach simulates the capacity of forests to store carbon under different scenarios at national scale in Spain, providing important information for optimal decision-making on forest-related policies. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Long‐term grassland biodiversity experiments have shown that diversity effects on productivity tend to strengthen through time, as complementarity among coexisting species increases. But it remains less clear whether this pattern also holds for other ecosystems such as forests, and if so why. Here we explore whether diversity effects on tree growth change predictably during stand development in Finland's boreal forests. Using tree ring records from mature forests, we tested whether diameter growth trajectories of dominant tree species growing in mixture differed from those in monoculture. We then compared these results with data from the world's longest running tree diversity experiment, where the same combinations of species sampled in mature forests were planted in 1999. We found that diversity effects on tree growth strengthened progressively through time, only becoming significantly positive around 20 years after seedling establishment. This shift coincided with the period in which canopy closure occurs in these forests, at which time trees begin to interact and compete above‐ground. These temporal trends were remarkably consistent across different tree species sampled in mature forests, and broadly matched growth responses observed in the much younger experimental plots. Synthesis. Our results mirror those from grassland ecosystems and suggest that canopy closure is a key phase for promoting niche complementarity in diverse tree communities. They also provide a series of testable hypotheses for the growing number of tree diversity experiments that have been established in recent years. The dominant scattering contribution to bistatic specular scattering coefficients (σ0) was analysed with the crop growth stages at various angle of incidence. The regression analysis showed high correlation between σ0 and crop growth variables at 40° angle of incidence for HH-polarization at X-band and for VV-polarization at C- and L-bands. The estimation of rice crop growth variables using subtractive clustering based fuzzy inference system (S-FIS) was done at 40° angle of incidence. The lower values of computed root mean square error (RMSE) between the observed and estimated values showed high potential of developed S-FIS model for the estimation of leaf area index for HH-polarisation at X-band, vegetation water content and fresh biomass for VV-polarization at C- and L-bands, respectively. [Termes IGN] signal GNSSRésumé : (auteur) The estimation of aboveground biomass is commonly recognized for global relevance because of the vegetation role in the carbon cycle. Both active and passive microwave sensors can significantly contribute to this goal because of their high sensitivity to water content and high penetration at lower frequencies (L-/P-bands). In particular, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) are recently receiving increasing interest as source of opportunity to be employed as illuminator for L-band remote sensing, since they could provide low-cost sensors for nondestructive forest biomass estimation over large areas. In this article, we suggest a method to extract forest information using the GNSS direct signals collected in clear sky and below the vegetation canopy at both circular polarizations. An experimental campaign, carried out in the framework of an European Space Agency (ESA) project, was conducted over three poplar forests with different biomass to verify the feasibility of this technique. The relationships between the GNSS measurements and the tree parameters were first assessed and then interpreted and supported by statistical analysis and a theoretical model. The signal collected under the canopy is affected by attenuation and depolarization with respect to the one collected in open air, and this article demonstrated that both direct line-of-sight propagation and volume scattering play a role in the signal magnitude and its fluctuation in time. Although the experimental data set is limited in size and environmental conditions, two inversion algorithms were also tested with the encouraging retrieval results.
