[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Under the continuous pressure of Dutch elm disease (DED) in Europe, increasing the genetic diversity of Ulmus minor trees resistant to Ophiostoma novo-ulmi is a priority for the species conservation and reintroduction. In this work we screened 121 U. minor genotypes for resistance to O. novo-ulmi under field experimental conditions. The genotypes had been previously obtained through controlled crosses between two moderately resistant (dams) and one susceptible (sire) genotypes. After two years of artificial inoculations with O. novo-ulmi, transgressive resistance was present but not prevalent, and a moderate relation was found between tree growth and susceptibility. Heritability estimates of DED resistance endorse significant genetic control and higher estimates for experimental blocks with milder symptoms. Three genotypes excelled for their high DED resistance, showing average foliage wilting values below 30% after the two years of inoculations. The genetic fingerprint, leaf phenology and morphology, and ornamental traits of these three genotypes were evaluated to facilitate their identification and use by stakeholders. Nuclear microsatellite profiling displayed unique barcodes for each genotype, ensuring traceability of the plant material. Morphological and phenological traits of the three genotypes are quite similar and fall within the species standards. In base of these results, three new native genotypes are proposed as basic materials for elm reintroduction in Western Europe. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of the maximum forest stand density and the self-thinning process is important for understanding, modelling and scheduling thinnings in silviculture. The upper trajectories of stem number, N, vs mean diameter, dq or mean tree volume vs stem number are often used for quantifying maximum stand density. The long debate about how site conditions modify these relationships is presently revived due to global change. A crucial question is whether environmental conditions alter the trajectories themselves or just the velocity at which stands move along them. Our contribution is based on fully stocked plots from long-term Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) fertilization experiments along an ecological gradient in South Germany. This allows us to compare the self-thinning trajectories of fertilized and unfertilized plots under different environmental conditions. We can show that repeated fertilization with nitrogen did not change the N ~ dq trajectories. Assuming that fertilization affects forests in a similar way as an ongoing atmospheric N-deposition, this means that presently growth, mortality, and volume accumulation in forest stands proceed faster in time but still follow the same N ~ dq allometric trajectories. Furthermore, we found that the level of the self-thinning line generally increases with the annual precipitation. The allometric self-thinning exponent, however, did not respond to environmental conditions. Finally, we quantitatively demonstrate and discuss the implications and consequences of the results regarding understanding and modelling forest stand dynamics, carbon sequestration and the development and adaptation of silvicultural guidelines in view of climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) In forest growing at any one site, the growth rate of an individual tree is determined principally by its size, which reflects its metabolic capacity, and by competition from neighboring trees. Competitive effects of a tree may be proportional to its size; such competition is termed ‘symmetric’ and generally involves competition below ground for nutrients and water from the soil. Competition may also be ‘asymmetric’, where its effects are disproportionate to the size of the tree; this generally involves competition above ground for sunlight, when larger trees shade smaller, but the reverse cannot occur. This work examines three model systems often seen as exemplars relating individual tree growth rates to tree size and both competitive processes. Data of tree stem basal area growth rates in plots of even-aged, monoculture forest of blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis Smith) growing in sub-tropical eastern Australia were used to test these systems. It was found that none could distinguish between size and competitive effects at any time in any one stand and, thus, allow quantification of the contribution of each to explaining tree growth rates. They were prevented from doing so both by collinearity between the terms used to describe each of the effects and technical problems involved in the use of nonlinear least-squares regression to fit the models to any one data set. It is concluded that quite new approaches need to be devised if the effects on tree growth of tree size and competitive processes are to be quantified and modelled successfully. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The use of prescribed fire has been on the rise in recent years owing to its effectiveness in surface fuel reduction, its implementation cost, and the possibility of firefighter training. However, greater knowledge regarding the effects of fire on woodlands is required by forest managers. Scorch height and scorch volume are the most widely used variables for evaluating the effects of burning on trees. This study proposes a scorch height model for the prescribed fires of pine stands in Southern Europe. Although the two main variables of the existing models (fire-line intensity and air temperature) were considered, our model achieved a coefficient of determination of 89% with the incorporation of the canopy base height. A decision tree for scorch volume was also developed using the three independent variables. The presence of canopy gaps in the lower, mid-, and upper slopes resulted in significant differences in the scorch height. The scorch height increased between 0.33 m and 2.08 m because of the canopy gaps in the upper slope. These findings can play an important role in the implementation and improvement of prescribed burn windows. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) We explore how the ground flora of a temperate woodland (Wytham Woods, southern England) changed in terms of species-richness, cover and biomass over five decades; what the drivers of change were; and possible future change as a consequence of the decline in Fraxinus excelsior as a canopy dominant. Vascular plants were recorded from 164 permanent, 10x10 m plots, distributed as a 141 m grid, in 1974, 1991, 1999, 2012, and 2018. Species presence and frequency/abundance in each plot were estimated and used to model biomass changes. Changes in species-richness, vegetation composition and structure were analysed. Stands opened out by thinning or which became denser through tree growth gained or lost species respectively, particularly non-woodland species. Deer pressure favoured the spread of Brachypodium sylvaticum and reduced Rubus fruticosus. No obvious impacts of climate change, eutrophication or of invasive species were detected in the plot records although other signs suggest these are starting to affect the flora. Just 12 out of 235 species contributed 47% of all species occurrences, 82% of the vegetation cover and 87% of the modelled biomass. We conclude that the ground flora is highly variable over decadal timescales, but the patterns of change observed differ according to the measures used (species richness, cover, biomass, etc). Site level drivers in the short-term swamped effects of slower acting regional/global drivers. Legacy effects were seen in the greater richness of specialists in the older woodland. While some impacts can be mitigated by management, others are largely beyond control at the site level.
