[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) In Germany, Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) is seen as a valuable species for future cultivation in times of climate change. Local seed production in seed stands and seed orchards may secure that local adaptation is transferred to the next generation, but small population sizes could lower genetic diversity and thus future adaptability. Here we analyse the transfer of genetic diversity from parent to offspring generation in four older German seed orchards. We detected low pollen contamination rates due to high levels of spatial isolation. Even with a relatively low number of 40 clones, seed orchard design with randomized and repeated planting of clones led to low selfing rates, and despite uneven parental contributions, the number of successful parents and the level of genetic intermixture were high enough to allow the transfer of an adequate part of the genetic diversity to the next generation. Larger numbers, however, might be needed to reliably conserve the entire genetic diversity over succeeding generations. Conclusions on the establishment of future seed orchards and regarding areas requiring further research are drawn at the end of the paper. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Key message: As climate change and forest management become the focus of various development agendas and the price of carbon rises in the market, the need for improving carbon sequestration and avoiding wildfires emissions increases. Prescribed burning interventions might play an important role in this context, as in some situations, it has been suggested that it can reduce overall fire emissions. In this study, the potential economic benefits associated with the practice are analyzed for five Mediterranean countries. Despite the uncertainty in the estimates, the results suggest that under some circumstances these interventions can be cost-effective from a carbon management perspective.
Context: Wildland fires are becoming a major concern for many European countries and are expected to become more prevalent due to climate change, affecting societies, ecosystems, and various ecosystem services provided by forests that are not valued by traditional markets, such as carbon sequestration.
Aims: The objective of this study is to evaluate the possibility of using carbon taxation to fund fire management measures in Mediterranean countries.
Methods: The analysis is done by converting prescribed burning savings in carbon emissions into their economic value. This is performed for France, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, which is studied in more detail, since the country has a National Prescribed Burning Program (NPBP) and a specific tax on carbon in place.
Results: The results indicate that most countries could potentially have benefits in the order of millions of euros from employing prescribed burning measures. In Portugal, NPBP has the potential to be a relevant policy instrument to reduce wildfire emissions, as well as economically since the carbon emissions savings can outweigh the prescribed burning costs in some circumstances. Also, the revenue from the country’s Addition Tax on Carbon Emissions would be able to accommodate the foreseen prescribed burning costs.
Conclusion: There are still many uncertainties regarding the benefits of prescribed burning in terms of overall emission reductions, and more studies should be conducted on this topic. However, as the price of carbon rises in the markets and climate change becomes a more pressing concern, even small emissions reductions might be economically interesting. The analysis framework used in this study has the potential to be useful for other countries, especially in Mediterranean-type ecosystems.Numéro de notice : A2021-120 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-021-01115-7 Date de publication en ligne : 13/12/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-021-01115-7 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=99297

[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The best options to parametrize a radiative transfer model change according to the response variable used for fitting. To predict transmitted radiation, the turbid medium approach performs much better than the porous envelop, especially when accounting for the intra-specific variations in leaf area density but crown shape has limited effects. When fitting with tree growth data, the porous envelop approach combined with the more complex crown shape provides better results. When using a joint optimization with both variables, the better options are the turbid medium and the more detailed approach for describing crown shape and leaf area density.
Context: Solar radiation transfer is a key process of tree growth dynamics in forest.
Aims: Determining the best options to parametrize a forest radiative transfer model in heterogeneous oak and beech stands from Belgium.
Methods: Calibration and evaluation of a forest radiative transfer module coupled to a spatially explicit tree growth model were repeated for different configuration options (i.e., turbid medium vs porous envelope to calculate light interception by trees, crown shapes of contrasting complexity to account for their asymmetry) and response variables used for fitting (transmitted radiation and/or tree growth data).
Results: The turbid medium outperformed the porous envelope approach. The more complex crown shapes enabling to account for crown asymmetry improved performances when including growth data in the calibration.
Conclusion: Our results provide insights on the options to select when parametrizing a forest radiative 3D-crown transfer model depending on the research or application objectives.

[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The current increase in European forest resources forms a singularity across the globe. Whether this trend will persist, and how biological and economic trends feature it form crucial issues to green economy challenges and C sequestration. The present screening of Forest Europe 2015 statistics explored the features, inertia and limits of this expansion, and its relationships with countries’ development, forest management and trade, intense in this area of the world. Persisting footprint of past demographic pressure on forests was identified, with opposed traces on their area and growing stock density. Steady growing stock (GS) increases, proportional to GS, not density-limited, and sustained by forest area increases, supported the view of an inflationary forest dynamic. Economic development and liberalism fostered both forest exploitation and production, yielding no significant impact on GS changes. Wood exports exerted a tension on forest exploitation and GS changes, thus lowering GS inflation but providing a resource security margin in the face of expected climate threats. Conflicting a common view, GS inflation and moderate felling-to-increment ratios make increased use of wood resources and C sequestration reconcilable, and GS expansion timely for ongoing EU forest policy processes. Anticipated adverse impacts of ongoing climate change were not clearly identified in these statistics.
