[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Forest plantations are more vulnerable to the stress induced by biotic and abiotic factors than are naturally regenerated forests. These effects can be aggravated by a lack of management in large reforestation areas, and thinning could, therefore, help trees to reduce dieback and tree mortality related to drought. We address this question using a dendrochronology and modelling approach to improve the understanding of the growth response of high-density planted pine forests to thinning in drought-prone areas of Southern Spain. An experimental trial was, therefore, carried out with three species (Pinus halepensis, P. nigra, and P. sylvestris) and three thinning treatments (unthinned, moderate, and heavy thinning), after which growth-climate relationships and drought vulnerability indices were assessed. Three separate generalized linear mixed-effects models (GLMM), one for each species and location, were fitted using BAI as the response variable, and post-thinning growth trajectories and drought vulnerability indices were also simulated. Ten-year basal area showed strong growth responses following the thinning treatment (BAI10, 72% for P. halepensis and 50% for P. sylvestris as regards heavy thinning and 51% for P. nigra as regards moderate thinning), with different responses to precipitation and temperature according to species and thinning intensity. The significant effects of thinning on drought vulnerability indices indicated that the thinning treatments had a positive effect, irrespective of the pine species, although this was more evident in the case of P. sylvestris (recovery F = 28.10, p Numéro de notice : A2023-198 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1016/j.foreco.2023.120936 Date de publication en ligne : 28/03/2023 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2023.120936 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=103086

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Recent drought-induced dieback alters forest dynamics, which are also shaped by past management. In western Pyrenean silver fir (Abies alba) stands, dieback concurs in space and time with the legacies of past management, but the impacts on forest growth, structure and composition are unknown. We aim to disentangle how dieback interacts with the legacies of past human use and modulates the recent dynamics of silver fir forests. To this end, we sampled eleven silver fir forests across wide climatic gradients and included declining and non-declining sites. We measured radial growth, structure, composition, understory cover and type and amount of deadwood. Silver fir growth declines in response to late-summer drought. In declining sites, most defoliated stands showed the lowest silver fir density and were those where growth depended more on water availability. Tree death enhanced the cover of dominant understory plants such as Buxus sempervirens. Past management activities leave an imprint in the growth of silver fir, such as releases due to past logging, but also affect the number of stumps and snags and the current tree density. A more extensive monitoring will be required to fully disentangle the multiple influences of past management legacies and current climate change on forest dynamics. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Quercus robur/Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris are widely distributed and economically important tree species in Europe co-occurring on mesotrophic, xeric and mesic sites. Increasing dry conditions may reduce their growth, but growth reductions may be modified by mixture, competition and site conditions. The annual diameter growth in monospecific and mixed stands along an ecological gradient with mean annual temperatures ranging from 5.5 °C to 11.5 °C was investigated in this study. On 36 triplets (108 plots), trees were cored and the year-ring series were cross-dated, resulting in year-ring series of 785 and 804 trees for Q. spp. and P. sylvestris, respectively. A generalized additive model with a logarithmic link was fit to the data with random effects for the intercept at the triplet, year and tree level and a random slope for the covariate age for each tree; the Tweedie-distribution was used. The final model explained 87 % of the total variation in diameter increment for both tree species. Significant covariates were age, climate variables (long-term mean, monthly), local competition variables, relative dbh, mixture, stand structure and interactions thereof. Tree growth declined with age and local density and increased with social position. It was positively influenced by mixture and structural diversity (Gini coefficient); mixture effects were significant for P. sylvestris only. The influence of potential evapotranspiration (PET) in spring and autumn on tree growth was positive and non-linear, whereas tree growth sharply decreased with increasing PET in June, which proved to be the most influential month on tree growth along the whole ecological gradient. Interactions of PET with tree social position (relative dbh) were significant in July and September for Q. spp. and in April for P. sylvestris. Interactions of climate with density or mixture were not significant. Climatic effects found agree well with previous results from intra-annual growth studies and indicate that the model captures the causal factors for tree growth well. Furthermore, the interaction between climate and relative dbh might indicate a longer growth duration for trees of higher social classes. Analysis of random effects across time and space showed highly dynamic patterns, with competitive advantages changing annually between species and spatial patterns showing no large-scale trends but pointing to the prevalence of local site factors. In mixed-species stands, the tree species have the same competitivity in the long-term, which is modified by climate each year. Climate warming will shift the competitive advantages, but the direction will be highly site-specific. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The challenges of applying process-based models to uneven-aged forests are the difficulties in simulating the interactions between trees and resource allocation between size classes. In this study, we focused on a process-based forest growth model PREBAS which is a mean tree model with Reineke self-thinning mortality and was originally developed for even-aged forests. The primary aim was to test the application of PREBAS model to uneven-aged forests by introducing different diameter at breast height (DBH) size classes to better represent the forest structure. Additionally, we introduced a new mortality model to PREBAS which is developed for uneven-aged stands and compared with the current PREBAS version in which a modification Reineke rule is used. The tests were conducted in 26 old Norway spruce dominated stands in southern and central Finland with three consecutive measurements (on average a 25-year study period). To evaluate the model performance, we compared the estimations of stand averaged diameter at breast height (D), stand averaged tree height (H), stand averaged crown base height (), stand basal area (B) and density (N) with measurements. Moreover, biomass estimations of each tree component (foliage, branch and stem) were compared to estimations from empirical models. Results showed that introducing size distributions can represent better stand structure and improve the model predictions compared with data. Moreover, the new mortality model showed promise with qualitatively more realistic results especially among the largest tree size classes. However, model bias still existed in the simulation although the predictions were improved. It revealed that further calibration of the PREBAS model with size classes should be done to better extend the model applicability to uneven-aged forests. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mediterranean riparian forests have been altered by past use and are also negatively impacted by climate and hydrological droughts. However, we lack data on their historical changes in extent combined with multi-proxy, long-term assessments of tree growth and leaf gas exchange responses to climate, drought severity and river flow. These evaluations must also consider their current stand structure and the amount of lying deadwood which are proxies of river dynamics and forest maturity. To fill these research gaps, we studied four riparian tree species (Populus alba, Populus nigra, Fraxinus angustifolia and Ulmus minor) inhabiting a Mediterranean riparian forest located in north-eastern Spain. We quantified and analyzed: stand structure; lying deadwood; radial growth; relationships between growth, climate variables, the SPEI drought index and river flow; stable C (δ13C) and O (δ18O) isotopes in wood of P. alba, P. nigra and F. angustifolia; and earlywood anatomy in F. angustifolia. Mature sites were dominated by P. nigra and F. angustifolia and showed the highest amount of decayed lying deadwood. Radial growth was reduced by drought and low spring-summer river flow. We found the highest growth responses to 3- (P. nigra, r = 0.62; P. alba, r = 0.46) or 12-month SPEI (F. angustifolia, r = 0.54; U. minor, r = 0.53). The coordinated decrease in δ18O and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE) in P. alba and P. nigra could involve an increase in stomatal conductance rate. P. alba and P. nigra were more enriched in δ18O than F. angustifolia, suggesting the former used more enriched shallow groundwater in dry periods. The F. angustifolia WUE and P. nigra δ18O series were positively and negatively correlated with the SPEI, respectively. The F. angustifolia hydraulic diameter decreased in response to drought, whereas its vessel density and WUE were positively associated. Overall, P. nigra and F. angustifolia were the species most responsive to drought.
