[Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (auteur) Preventive maintenance of power lines, including cutting and pruning of tree branches, is essential to avoid interruptions in the energy supply. Automatic methods can support this risky task and also reduce time-consuming. Here, we propose a method in which the orientation and the grasping positions of tree branches are estimated. The proposed method firstly predicts the straight line (representing the tree branch extension) based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). Secondly, a Hough transform is applied to estimate the direction and position of the line. Finally, we estimate the grip point as the pixel point with the highest probability of belonging to the line. We generated a dataset based on internet searches and annotated 1868 images considering challenging scenarios with different tree branch shapes, capture devices, and environmental conditions. Ten-fold cross-validation was adopted, considering 90% for training and 10% for testing. We also assessed the method under corruptions (gaussian and shot) with different severity levels. The experimental analysis showed the effectiveness of the proposed method reporting F1-score of 96.78%. Our method outperformed state-of-the-art Deep Hough Transform (DHT) and Fully Convolutional Line Parsing (F-Clip). [Termes IGN] plantation forestièreRésumé : (auteur) As a place to live, work and play, urban spaces are the nerve centers of human activity. The urban spaces, which are becoming increasingly extensive and dense, are particularly sensitive to the effects of climate change. Greening cities has been identified as one of the most effective ways to mitigate one of these effects, the urban heat island. In this context, the city of Liège, Belgium, has adopted a greening plan, called “Plan canopée”, to increase the tree canopy area at city level. The aim of this study is to present the methodology used to objectivize and prioritize the selection of potential planting sites. This research proposes the production of a series of spatial indicators allowing, on the one hand, the precise mapping of urban surfaces ready for planting, and on the other hand, the objective prioritization of city districts to be vegetated. The research integrates airborne image classification, urban heat island modeling and a series of reference geodata combinations. The set of data produced provides a transparent decision support tool to the authorities for the operational planning of tree plantations. These results contribute to the development of a planting strategy that maximizes the chances of ownership by the citizens, and consequently the sustainable and effective impact of the achievements. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Urbanization and climate change are two inevitable megatrends of this century. Knowledge about the growth responses of urban trees to climate is of utmost importance towards future management of green infrastructure with the aim of a sustainable provision of the environmental ecosystem services. Using tree-ring records, this study analyzed growth response to climate by stem diameter at breast height (DBH) of 1178 trees in seven large cities worldwide, including Aesculus hippocastanum L. in Munich; Platanus × hispanica Münchh. in Paris; Quercus nigra L. in Houston; Quercus robur L. in Cape Town; Robinia pseudoacacia L. in Santiago de Chile, Munich, and Würzburg; and Tilia cordata Mill. in Berlin, Munich, and Würzburg. Climate was characterized following the de Martonne aridity index (DMI). Overall, trees showed an 8.3% lower DBH under arid than humid climate at the age of 100. Drought-tolerant tree species were overall not affected by climate. However, R. pseudoacacia showed a lower diameter when growing in semi-dry than humid climate. In contrast, drought-sensitive tree species were negatively affected by arid climate. Moreover, the effect of drought years on annual diameter increment was assessed. P. × hispanica and R. pseudoacacia appeared as the most drought-resistant species. The highest sensitivity to drought was detected in T. cordata and Q. robur. A. hippocastanum and Q. nigra showed a lower diameter growth during drought events, followed by a fast recovery. This study’s findings may contribute to a better understanding of urban tree growth reactions to climate, aiming for sustainable planning and management of urban trees. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (Auteur) The collection of field-reference data is a key task in remote sensing-based forest inventories. However, traditional methods of collection demand extensive personnel resources. Thus, field-reference data collection would benefit from more automated methods. In this study, we proposed a method for individual tree detection (ITD) and stem attribute estimation based on a car-mounted mobile laser scanner (MLS) operating along forest roads. We assessed its performance in six ranges with increasing mean distance from the roadside. We used a Riegl VUX-1LR sensor operating with high repetition rate, thus providing detailed cross sections of the stems. The algorithm we propose was designed for this sensor configuration, identifying the cross sections (or arcs) in the point cloud and aggregating those into single trees. Furthermore, we estimated diameter at breast height (DBH), stem profiles, and stem volume for each detected tree. The accuracy of ITD, DBH, and stem volume estimates varied with the trees’ distance from the road. In general, the proximity to the sensor of branches 0–10 m from the road caused commission errors in ITD and over estimation of stem attributes in this zone. At 50–60 m from roadside, stems were often occluded by branches, causing omissions and underestimation of stem attributes in this area. ITD’s precision and sensitivity varied from 82.8% to 100% and 62.7% to 96.7%, respectively. The RMSE of DBH estimates ranged from 1.81 cm (6.38%) to 4.84 cm (16.9%). Stem volume estimates had RMSEs ranging from 0.0800 m3 (10.1%) to 0.190 m3 (25.7%), depending on the distance to the sensor. The average proportion of detected reference volume was highly affected by the performance of ITD in the different zones. This proportion was highest from 0 to 10 m (113%), a zone that concentrated most ITD commission errors, and lowest from 50 to 60 m (66.6%), mostly due to the omission errors in this area. In the other zones, the RMSE ranged from 87.5% to 98.5%. These accuracies are in line with those obtained by other state-of-the-art MLS and terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) methods. The car-mounted MLS system used has the potential to collect data efficiently in large-scale inventories, being able to scan approximately 80 ha of forests per day depending on the survey setup. This data collection method could be used to increase the amount of field-reference data available in remote sensing-based forest inventories, improve models for area-based estimations, and support precision forestry development. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) With the increased availability of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) imagery, digitalized forest inventory has gained prominence in recent years. This paper presents a methodology for automated measurement of tree height and crown area in two broadleaf tree plantations of different species and ages using two different UAS platforms. Using structure from motion (SfM), we generated canopy height models (CHMs) for each broadleaf plantation in Indiana, USA. From the CHMs, we calculated individual tree parameters automatically through an open-source web tool developed using the Shiny R package and assessed the accuracy against field measurements. Our analysis shows higher tree measurement accuracy with the datasets derived from multi-rotor platform (M600) than with the fixed wing platform (Bramor). The results show that our automated method could identify individual trees (F-score > 90%) and tree biometrics (root mean square error Numéro de notice : A2022-351 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.3390/rs14081931 Date de publication en ligne : 16/04/2022 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.3390/rs14081931 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=100539
