[Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) We designed a novel method allowing to automatically detect and measure defects on the surface of trunks including branches, branch scars, and epicormics from terrestrial LiDAR data by using only high-density 3D information. We could automatically detect and measure the defects with a diameter as small as 0.5 cm on either oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) or beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees that display either rough or smooth bark.
Context : Ground-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology describes standing trees with a high level of detail. This provides an opportunity to assess standing tree quality and to use this information in forest inventory. Assuming the availability of a very high level of detail, we could extract information about the surface defects, mainly inherited from past ramification and having a strong impact on wood quality.
Aims : Within the general framework of the development of a computing method able to detect, identify, and quantify the defects on the trunk surface described from 3D data produced by a terrestrial LiDAR, this study focuses on the relevance of the whole process for two tree species with contrasted bark roughness (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Fagus sylvatica L.) in terms of detection, identification of the defects, and comparison with measurements performed manually on the bark surface.
Methods : First, a segmentation algorithm detected singularities on the trunk surface. Next, a Random Forests machine learning algorithm identified the most probable defect type and allowed the elimination of false detections. Finally, we estimated the position, horizontal, and vertical dimensions of each defect from 3D data, and we compared them to those observed directly on the trunk by an operator.
Results : The defects were detected and classified with a high accuracy with an average F1
score (harmonic mean of precision and recall) of 0.74. There were differences in computed and observed defect areas, but a much closer agreement for the number of defects.
Conclusion : The information about the defects present on the trunk surface measured from terrestrial LiDAR data can be used in an automated procedure for grading standing trees or roundwoods.Numéro de notice : A2021-326 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01022-3 Date de publication en ligne : 01/04/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01022-3 Format de la ressource électronique : URL Article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97484

[Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Distinct chemical fingerprints of the wood of Afzelia pachyloba and A. bipindensis demonstrated an effective method for identifying these two commercially important species. Direct analysis in real-time (DART) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) allowed high-throughput examination of chemotypes with vast potential in taxonomic, ecological, and forensic research of wood.
Context : Afzelia is a genus of valuable tropical timber trees. Accurate identification of wood is required for the prevention of illicit timber trade as well as for certification purposes in the forest and wood products industry. For many years, particular interest has been focused on attempts to distinguish the wood of A. bipindensis Harms from A. pachyloba Harms due to substantial differences in the commercial values of these two species.
Aims : We investigated if wood chemical signatures and microscopy could identify the wood of A. bipindensis and A. pachyloba.
Methods : We used two approaches, namely metabolome profiling by direct analysis in real-time (DART) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) and wood microstructure by light microscopy and SEM. In all, we analyzed samples from 89 trees of A. bipindensis, and A. pachyloba.
Results : The two species could not be separated by the IAWA standard microscopic wood features. SEM analysis showed considerable variation in the morphology of vestured pits; however, this variation was not species-specific. In contrast, DART-TOFMS followed by unsupervised statistics (Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components) showed distinct metabolome signatures of the two species.
Conclusion : DART-TOFMS provides a rapid method for wood identification that can be easily applied to small heartwood samples. Time- and cost-effective classification of wood chemotypes by DART-TOFMS can have potential applications in various research questions in forestry, wood science, tree-ecophysiology, and forensics.Numéro de notice : A2021-327 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01024-1 Date de publication en ligne : 31/03/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01024-1 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97488

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Aboveground biomass quantification is essential for determining carbon stocks in forests. Multiple tree biomass models are available, but estimations can be biased outside the fitting range. This is due to the lack of data for larger trees, mainly because of the cost and time required. This study proposed a methodology based on tree crown biomass ratio (crown biomass: total aboveground biomass) modelling. The original data used in the existing biomass models in Spain have been notably extended by the inclusion of stem data from First Spanish National Forest Inventory and other databases, covering better tree size variability. The analysis of the crown biomass ratio against tree size (d2h), allowed us to distinguish three different patterns: an increasing pattern, a constant one, and a decreasing pattern. A new system of biomass models was fitted simultaneously by species, including a model for crown biomass ratio according to the identified pattern, a stem biomass model, and a total aboveground biomass model. Using this methodology, models were fitted for the 29 most important species in Spain. The fitted models result in more accurate and unbiased predictions for stem biomass, and realistic estimations for the crown biomass. This methodology means more robust and flexible biomass estimations with the possibility of using different data sources. The absence of crown information is not an obstacle because this component is a percentage of total aboveground biomass. Moreover, determining the crown biomass ratio pattern allows improving the accuracy of tree biomass estimation beyond the range of tree sizes (2–70 cm) for which these models were fitted. [Termes IGN] Wisconsin (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (auteur) Individual tree identification is a key step for forest surveying and monitoring. To identify individual trees with airborne LiDAR data, a local maximum (LM) filter technique is typically performed. With LM, the highest point in a filtering window is generally considered to represent the tree position. This assumption, however, has great limitations, especially for mixed forests. To address this problem, we developed a new approach, the cluster center of higher points (CCHP), for tree position detection with LiDAR data. CCHP assumes that a tree position is located at the clustering center of higher points within a spatial neighborhood, and the center can be detected by a location-based recursive algorithm. The developed CCHP method was applied to a simulated forest and then verified in two real urban forests. In comparison with the variable window-sized LM filter method and layer stacking method, CCHP successfully identified 97% of trees in the simulated forest, while only 78% and 81% of the trees were recognized by LM and layer stacking methods respectively. The average absolute and relative offsets of CCHP are 0.33 m and 6.59%, respectively, and over 80% of the detected trees have an offset of less than 10% of the tree crown radius. CCHP also correctly detected 93.80% and 88.74% of individual trees in the first and second real forests, respectively, but the detection rates from the variable window-sized LM approach and layer stacking were less than 80%. In addition, the tree positions located by CCHP are considerably more accurate than the other two methods. Therefore, CCHP is proven to be promising for detecting individual tree positions from airborne LiDAR data for both simulated and real forests. [Termes IGN] SlovénieRésumé : (auteur) Based on the laser point clouds of 240 individual trees that were also identified in the field, we developed decision trees to distinguish deciduous and coniferous trees and individual tree species: Picea abies, Larix decidua, Pinus sylvestris, Fagus sylvatica, Acer pseudoplatanus, Fraxinus excelsior. The volume of the upper part of the tree crown (height of 3 m) and the average intensity of the laser reflections were used as explanatory variables. There were four aerial laser datasets: May 2012, September 2012, March 2013 and July 2015. We found that the combination of the volume and the average intensity of the first three laser datasets was the most reliable for predicting the selected tree species (60% model performance). A slightly poorer model performance was obtained if only the average intensity of the first three datasets was used (54% model performance). The worst model performance was given by the intensities (31 % model performance) or the volumes (21 % model performance) of dataset 4, which represents the national laser scanning of Slovenia (LSS). The best performing was the deciduous and coniferous separation, which achieved 75% and 95% success based on the test data (combination of volume and average intensity of the first three laser datasets). Using only the LSS intensities, deciduous and coniferous trees could be separated with 81% success.
