[Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography is a 3-D imaging modality that is commonly tackled by spectral estimation techniques. Thus, the backscattered power along the cross-range direction can be readily obtained by computing the Fourier spectrum of a stack of multibaseline measurements. In addition, recent work has addressed the tomographic inversion under the framework of compressed sensing, thereby recovering sparse cross-range profiles from a reduced set of measurements. This paper differs from previous publications, in that it focuses on sparse expansions in the wavelet domain while working with the second-order statistics of the corresponding multibaseline measurements. In this regard, we elaborate on the conditions under which this perspective is applicable to forested areas and discuss the possibility of optimizing the acquisition geometry. Finally, we compare this approach with traditional nonparametric ones and validate it by using fully polarimetric L-band data acquired by the Experimental SAR (E-SAR) sensor of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). [Termes IGN] penteRésumé : (Auteur) Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) has become a valuable tool in forest inventory because it yields accurate measurements of tree heights. However, tree height can be accurate only if the height of the ground, i. e., the Digital Terrain Model (dtm) is first accurately established. Although great advances have been made in lidar technology over the past decade, filtering lidar data for Digital Terrain Model (dtm) interpolation is still a challenge, especially in steep and complex terrain with forest cover. Several algorithms proposed in the literature address this challenge but their performance deteriorates with the decreasing point density caused by the presence of forest cover and steep slopes. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive algorithm for dtm interpolation from lidar data in steep terrain with forest cover. The algorithm partitions the input data and estimates a section of the dtm by fitting a linear or quadratic trend surface, or uses cubic spline interpolation depending on the complexity of the section of terrain. The performance of the algorithm is tested in three ways: by visual assessment, by comparison of the tree-height estimates produced using the generated dtm with those obtained using field survey, and by use of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (isprs) test data. Test results show that the algorithm can cope well with steep slopes and low lidar point densities, giving a more accurate estimate of average tree height compared to conventional algorithms. The algorithm can be used for dtm extraction in large scale forest inventory projects in challenging environments–complex terrain and low lidar point densities. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Inventorying and monitoring are imperative to management of vulnerable coastal wetlands. Multi-date and multi-sensor remote sensing offer new capabilities to wetland programmes such as the US National Wetland Inventory. This pilot study focuses on swamp forests and pocosins, marshes, shrub–scrub and invasive Phragmites australis. Combinations of spaceborne multi-date Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery and airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) elevation (bare earth elevation and vegetation height) were evaluated. Multi-date SAR data (horizontal-horizontal and horizontal-vertical dual polarizations) highlighted physiognomic dynamics, with LiDAR vegetation canopy discerning selected classes. The highest overall accuracy used SAR, LiDAR canopy and digital elevation model (DEM) data (81% = 0.744), but not significantly different from the SAR-only classification (81% = 0.742). Both classifications exceeded the data combination using SAR data and DEM (66% = 0.521) and SAR data with vegetation canopy (80% = 0.725). This approach requires investigation using advanced classification algorithms to prove its potential for monitoring wetland change, sea-level rise, and invasive species. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) National-scale forest inventories have endeavoured to include holistic measurements of forest health inclusive of attributes such as downed dead wood and tree regeneration that occur in the forest understory. Inventories may require year-round measurement of inventory plots with some of these measurements being affected by seasonal obstructions (e.g. snowpacks and seasonal flooding). In order to assess the potential effects that snow/water obstructions may have on the measurement/analysis of forest seedlings across large scales, the differences in seedling abundance between two inventory measurements (∼5-year remeasurement period) and as affected by snow/water depth was ascertained using a repeated forest inventory across the eastern US. Results indicate that there is a general trend of decreasing seedling density over time (−33.16 seedlings ha−1 year−1) in the eastern US, with snow/water depths in excess of 15 cm significantly affecting resulting estimates of seedling abundance. Although snow/water obstruction to seedling measurement occurred on ∼9 per cent of inventory plots across the eastern US, snow was a much more common situation occurring on nearly 50 per cent of plots (at time 1, 2 or both) at high latitudes (>45°). Given the statistically significant effect of snow/water on seedling abundance estimates, tree regeneration assessments should not include observations obstructed by snow/water depths that exceed minimum seedling heights. Furthermore, seedling abundance inventories may mitigate the influence of measurement obstructions by sampling only during the summer or incorporating climate information into their sampling logistics. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) is a modular decision support system that monitors forest fires at a continental scale. It delivers real-time, multi-dimensional data on forest fires to civil protection and fire fighting services in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle-East. Since its inception in 2001, EFFIS has evolved into the central reference point for pan-European forest and wildfire information, and this paper describes and current applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art fire information systems that provide data to civil protection authorities across Europe. The objective of EFFIS is to provide accurate data in order to assess and mitigate the impacts of wildfire events on society and the environment. Furthermore, EFFIS provides real-time information on critical fires, supporting decision making for international collaboration on forest fire fighting activities. Its goal is to make these data readily available using Web-based standards and protocols.
